Have To Get It Off My Chest.

This is gonna be real hard. It is easily the strangest and deep down terrifying thing that has ever happened to me. I was just lying in bed trying to sleep and I started to think about it and I just started crying. Listen, im not an emotional type guy, but this, I can't explain it. I gotta tell it.

Both me and my father are avid hunters. My whole family really. We have a nice piece of property deep in the woods, about 2 hours drive by ATV off the highway, it's the only way to get there. Me and my father were going on the annual hunting trip, a weekend in the woods. We both are driving, we must be about an hour into the drive when I see my fathers ATV slide out from under itself. I mean, the ground just gave. Having terrible reation time, I follow. The time is about mid-November and its just had a good cold snap. However, it had rained very heavily a few nights before and the ground was very sloppy. We ended up in the crater of an uprooted tree. This thing was deep, must of been 4-5 ft of water in it. We went through the thin ice easy. Needless to say, the ATV's were done. We were wet and cold, but not injured. We were aware that there was a major snowstorm coming our way, but we knew we could get to the camp easily ahead of it and we could use the snowmobile we keep there to get around if it was really bad. Now we were cold and trying to outrun a killer storm. We set off and arrived at the camp after about 3 hours of hiking. We were nearly hypothermic, but we got a fire goin easy enough. It was now dusk. We had changed, and were about to bed down when we started to hear the storm really pick up. Blowing hard, real hard and snowing just as much. We admired it for awhile before goin to sleep. We both woke up at the same time. It was now 1:27 AM. It wasnt a noise, it was a feeling. We havnt talked about it much, probably never will, but the best we can come up with is a deep sensation of dread. As though you had a trip to the dentist, only much worse. The storm hadn't died down a bit. We had to re-kindle the fire, and this is where it gets really nuts. Christ im crying again. We saw things out in the storm. Huge things. Shadows. And God there were so many of them. But it wasnt their presence, it was that feeling of dread. But now it wasnt just there, it was like that feeling was trying to reach up and strangle me. It was numbing. Neither of us knows how long they stayed, we agree more than half an hour but less than two. All they did was move around. They were circling. The whole time just circling like sharks. It was a sleepless night. In the morning, we just got on the snowmobile and got out. There were no signs of them. We told the rest of the family the story, but without the shadows.

Ive never really told anyone that story, but I do feel better now.

    Bears wouldnt circle. Its proabably something interested in your fire/food/whatever you had there but small/scared enough not to approach. Unless you were just seeing things <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    Confinement does crazy things to us. When I was in high school, it seemed like I went insane every time summer vacation rolled around. I never really had any friends until much later on, and this was before I got a computer. As a result, once reading and TV got stale, which didn't take long, I had a couple months' worth of doing absolutely nothing but staring at blank walls, because my father was out at work, so I was alone in the house. Nothing was keeping me there or anything, but I had nowhere to go, so it was the same effect. I often fell to twitching and gibberish out of frustration, and convincing myself of the most nonsensical ideas just for entertainment. All the problems seemed to melt away once somebody else was around, though.

    PS: Golems would never do something like that. Necromantic constructs are our friends. They just get a bad rap because of a few irresponsible magi that order them to do nasty things.

    One time I was camping in the woods, on the ground with no tent, just me and a sleeping bag and a bunch of my friends with their own sleeping bags. I awoke some time in the night to see something off in the distance, a shadow, it might have been my confused mind playing tricks on me because I just had awoke, but it was large and I have no idea what it was....actually, I fell back asleep right after that.....

    It was probably just my sleep addeld mind playing tricks on me..

    This is an example of where you ditch your heroism, and just get down to saving your life: Good job.

    Everytime I've gone into the woods ive had some wierd **** happen to me, like once I was hunting wiht my grandpa and I dunno why but I just STOPPED, right ont he top of a little hill, and I dunno how to explain this but it felt like I left my body or something, I could see everything like watery and I could hear everything, I remember moving down the hill but not moving and coming right up to a bunch of grouse that were in the trail then I blinked and I was back onthe hill with my grandpa... wiggy

    I'd say it was just an illusion caused by stress.

    OR ZOMBIES!!

    TELL ME WHERE YOU WERE SO I CAN PREPARE FOR THE SOLANUM OUTBREAK RIGHT FREAKIN' NOW!!

    I need to stop reading the Zombie Survival Guide...

    And before you say it, maybe I don't want to take the effort needed to move my finger 7/16ths of an inch.

    Besides, I usually just hold Shift.

    Listen, I dunno. There were no options. It was easily the worst feeling of my life. I couldn't move. I was deer in the headlights terrified.

    I think he's referring to the part of the story in which you tell how, instead of being an idiot and trying to walk out of the area in a snowstorm, you took the initiative to do what was necessary to live.

    By the way, how recent was this? Because I was somewhere last weekend that had a large snow-storm comming in, and a god-awful wind.

    The explaination you'll get from people depends on the people giving it.

    Most likely it was just shadows. Stress can indeed cause you to see and hear things that aren't there, especially in a new and more alien environment than what you're accustomed to (city -> woods). Its happened to me several times.

    Some others may suggest it might have been demons/evil spirits/whatnot.

    I think it was John Romero.

    (Just trying to lighten the mood and make you feel a little better, as I really don't have anything to say that could help you out).

    Extremely creepy, and I get the feeling you're not making this stuff up (to the best of your knowledge). When I read those last few lines, I had to look over my shoulder, and I still am kinda creeped out. There's something in there....

    I got that feeling when I was reading your posts. Must have been terrifying for you... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I don't know much about American woods, could it have been wolves?

    I dont understand the story. The ground gave, you ended up in 5ft of water, then thin ice?
  • pantspants Join Date: 2002-12-20 Member: 11188Members
    I think the thin ice was covering the water... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Jeez Mantrid, don 't you know anything, if it was zombies then there would have been moaning! Plus, Zombies don't circle, they come straight at you!

    Yes, I too have the Zombie Survival Guide <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    How big are shadows? Are we talking bigfoot big? or King Kong big?

    The creeper thing about your story from my prespective is not what you may or may not have been seeing, but just the anguish it caused you and your dad. Its a strange thing to encounter a situation that just scares the crap out of you in situations that you would normally not be concerned highly about.

    I remeber a couple times when I was alone hiking back from somewhere and I suddenly felt like I was being followed. Even though I can almost guarenttee there was nothing there, just the feeling made those experiances terrifing.

    sounds like you had wolves circling you. wolves tend to explore things and circle abotu them. they dont usually attack unless starving or feel trheatened.. they probably sensed your fear and let you be eventually.

    The Blair Witch? Just a guess. But in all seriousness it would most probably have been wolves, although if the storm was that heavy then I doubt much would have been outside of shelter. Strange story but the thing that struck me most about it was you father was in the same frame of mind you were. Parents aren't supposed to get spooked so that would have scared the crap out of me just as much....

    I can offer some sort of explination, I think whenever a natural event happens that is potentially deadly it carries some sort of negative energy with it that we can pick up on. I remember on the night the northridge quake happened I woke up a few minutes before it struck and I saw some sort of shadow in my room, it was making a strange noise and I felt this sensation of dread easily the most scared I've ever been in my whole life.

    Try to find out if that snow storm caused any deaths before or after it struck.
