It might just have been some weird shadows caused by swirling snow, but it probably just a pack of wolves. nothing that you would normally be afraid of.

This is a perfect example for all you people out there who are like "I would run man!" The thing is you can't, even if they weren't circling him, I doubt he would jus get up and run, paralyzed by fear. I've been in that situation before. Dont really feel like sharing but all I can say is that the feeling isn't to great. For me its as if my heart were in my throat and what may have been a few seconds seemed like 15 minutes. I can't really tell you what it was. May have been your mind, may have been something else...

I dunno. It's not like it was a really stressful enviroment. I mean, I live in the woods. Ive been in worse situations than a snowstorm. We were relived when we got to the camp, and were enjoying ourseleves by the time we went to sleep. Oh yea, biggest thing we got in my woods is black bear, and their can be more than 50. I dont really have much more I can say.
The best thing you can do, at this point, is not to live in the past. It's over, you survived and you learned from the experience. Now you don't need to dwell on it anymore.
That's basically what I learned when I was going through a bad breakup. It helped me a lot, there.
It's a kind of instinct you get in a stressful or dangerous situation. You either stay and fight the foe (or problem) or you run as fast as your legs can carry you.
Being paralysed with fear is simply you choosing the fight response. If anything had dared poke it's head in that tent, I'm sure you guys would have defended yourselves.
Anyway, to prevent this post from becoming a **** knowitall response, heres an experience of mine.
It was school camp some years ago. As they do in highschool, guys had to camp away from the girls. Anyway, we were told that there were foxes in the area and that we had to seal our back packs fairly well if they werent to be raided.
My tent mate, lets call him David, was terrified of the foxes. I was concerned but not afraid. As a precaution, and because we had some room in the tent, we kept our packs inside the tent right next to us.
During the night, I was awoken by David, shaking me furiosly. I asked him what the matter was and he said he had heard something. I got up, rubbing the sleep from my eyes just in time to notice that my side of the tent was sticking in most sharply, showing the definition of a snout and paws. I quietly backed away. David was scared out of his wits. For the next thirty minutes or so, each side of the tent was penetrated in a similar manner, at times hitting us and scaring the wits out of David. I wasnt too concerned. Although the foxes (what I had presumed they were) were jumping up on the tent, they absolutely couldnt get inside (unless they were mutant foxes with opposable thumbs and larger brain mass). David wasnt so convinced of this fact.
Eventually the foxes left. I went back to sleep rather unconcerned. I dont know when David went back to sleep but he was damn tired in the morning.
Oh, why were the foxes jumping up on the tent you ask? The boys from the other tent had played a nasty little trick on us. Unwilling to eat the meat they had been supplied due to fears of salmonalla poisioning, they had decorated the outside of our tent with it while we were inside. The meat thus attracted the foxes.
Moral of the story? Unless it can tear through the fabric of your tent or can hit you from the outside through the tent fabric, I doubt it's worth fearing.
David went on to become an ex friend due to certain unavoidable factors (namely, he could never admit to being my friend in front of others). My revenge on the guys was eventually realised 8 months ago much to their expense and much to my humour.
Secondary moral of the story? Dont screw with me unless you expect a calculated revenge in exchange

It's the only time something like that has ever happened to me. Like I said, im not an emotional guy, hell I didnt cry when my mum died. Its just, I think it really upset me. Disturbed me in a really fundamental way. I do feel better after having told some people though, thanks for listening.
well ill tell you something a bit creepy but very true.
If any of you live in Devon near the moors you will enjoy this, or if any forum members have herd of the beast of Boodmin you will enjoy this. He suddnely had a strange sensation like when the hairs on the back of your neck raise and your eyes (well in my case) water when you know something is not right, he suddnely hit his breaks and came to a stop and looked to his left and what jumped over the hedge next to him was the beast of bodmin moor A.K.A A Big Cat, it took one look at him and contiued to walk infront of him careless and ignoring my uncle, walked about ten meters up the road and jumped over the next hedge. I think the best thing to do would be to talk to your father about it.
You said you were almost Hypothermic, that could cause alot of mental stress, you said you were happy going to sleep though. But exhaustion hiking 3 *EDIT*hours not miles... in the midst of an incoming snowstorm, freezing cold, probably exhausted you more than you think.
You were relieved to hit camp, but waking up in the middle of the night, stressed, exhausted, could of caused you to feel weird.
Talk to your father, let him recap what he saw/felt, and then decide if you saw the same thing. If you did...then well...creepy.
I'd have to say though, this is why cell phones have cameras and video recorders now I really wish you would of been able to take pictures. I'd have to say scary beasts, or bigfeet running around might be a little far-fetched, but we have new species popping up everyday. Who knows if they have been able to be secluded in the woods all this time.
Although, if it was windy, snowing, and the wind was howling, it could create an eerie feeling, especially with the trees creating shadows, along with the fire. Were they distinct shadows? Did they have a shape? I know I would freak myself out just chilling in the woods by myself, even with another person I don't know how long I could make it I have too much of an imagination!

The were very distinct, and extremely tall. Must have been 8ft at least. As for my father, the small amount weve talked about it, we both agree on the basic forms of them.
