I missed out on the Fallout goodness back in '97 when it was released. So last friday I ordered the fallout/fallout2 jewel set for 10 bucks. Best 10 bucks I've ever spent.
Fallout:
After the world has ended in nuclear winter, your family has retreated to one of many Vaults in which you were safe. Time has passed, you were born and raised there, and now the water chip has broke, meaning you'll soon be without water. So its your job to venture into the world and find a new water chip. The game doesn't sound like much, but I guarantee it is the MOST open ended game you will ever play. You can go anywhere anytime, and shoot ANYBODY. Yes, you can kill entire towns. You can steal a BB gun from a kid, sell it to his dad, steal the BB gun back from the dad, and sell it to a merchant(I've done this LOL). The character creation system is EXTREMELY flexible, you can make a kung fu master, a gun slinging bandit, a knife thrower, a minigun toting moron, you name it, you can do it. Battles are fought on a hexagonal grid, each action taking up a certain amount of action points (usually you have 6 or 7), and travel is done in real time.
And from what I hear fallout2 is better than the first. I'ma make a mess in my pants TWICE.
<span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>BUY THIS GAME</span>.... you may need to go to nma-fallout.com to get it working under 2000/XP (theres an install guide there, worked perfect for me)

Fallout 2 is indeed fantastic. Try and avoid doing a "Navarro Run". It makes the game waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too easy. But it's still nice and open ended and FINALLY i found a way to have lesbian sex. And i was proud.
I never managed to get into working in porn, which was a dissapointment. Y'see, that's the great thing about Fallout 2, sex works as a viable bargaining tool.
Damn straight. Fallout Roxors your Boxors!
I wish they'd released the tools. All the cities look similar anyway. Except San Fran. It felt so empty and boring. Some okay parts there, but the end of the game just feels shody compared to the rest to me. The games still incredibly nice.
Forget the attributes to become a porn star, lots of endurance and agility...and something else. I tried to play a druggie once...more work than playing someone who's not. (.223 pistol owns everything until the gauss pistol <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).
since there's several games that always keep cropping up in this forum, why don't we talk about System Shock 2 and Deus Ex while we're at it! good gamin'... =P
I did, high endurance, charisma, and agility I believe ( did this after I beat the game). Fallout 2 is my favorite game of all time, if any franchise deserved a MMORPG, it was Fallout, but instead it got a half made sequal (Fallout 3) that got "shelved" before it could see the light of day, and only one screenshot has been shown of it...it was 3D <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Why must everything I love be taken away from me, now I have to go drink to drown my sorrows....

It's the most addictive drug in the game, and it's really difficult to cure, unless you already have the car and a load of free time.
I've never really played Fallout either, just tried it for a few minutes. I actually have it in here somewhere, but I got it from a friend of my little brothers who doesn't give a crap about how discs should be handled, so it's all scratchy and won't work <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Blow up the Enclave oilrig and continue playing, then go the studio and you can make a movie about 'your adventures' in the waste <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I think you need 6 Endurance and 6 Agility, but I'm not sure about that.
Oh and if you want a challenge, go play as a drug addict ... preferrably addicted to Jet <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Ill wait till after my examds to buy em again.
I love the 'underdog' part of both, though - getting into new cities, making a name of yourself, and just watching the general morbid weirdness of the whole scenario ("May the water you drink not glow at night!") is great. Discovering the 'settlers' in Bunker 13 and finding out what happened to them later on is one of the most touching experiences I ever had in a game - <i>they</i>, of all beings, were the only altruistic minded creatures in a world built on misery.
Super sweet
Untill I found out that Fallout didn't run on 2k but I will go check out NMA for the installation guide. If any of you have FO:T and wanna give the multiplayer a spin grab me on irc and we'll sort out some rules and stuff.
if it's similar to Baldurs gate i might consider buying it, but im still waiting for BG3, or NwN 2
<ul><li>Based on the 'SPECIAL', not the Dungeons and Dragons ruleset. ('S-P-E-C-I-A-L' after the main attributes strength, perception, endurance, charisma, agility, intelligence, and luck). For the uses of a CRPG, I'll have to call SPECIAL superior.</li><li>Party NPCs are not manually controllable - you set the premises for their AIs, but come late game, they are realistically closer to mules than an actual help.</li><li>Round-based combat. A little tedious in small fights, but incredibly cool in big brawls.</li><li>Far reaching quest structure clearly eclipsing BG in terms of variance.</li><li>Dynamic karma system, no prefitted alignments.</li><li>Higher NPC interaction - much more unique personalities than BG.</li><li>Magic-free post-apocalyptic background.</li></ul>I'd highly suggest you check the game out - if nothing else, you'll find a few of the roots of BG. Oh, and BG2 pwns BG1 with attribute modifiers of up to -5.
I find those big footsteps scary when u meet em just 1 step then nothing els O.o
I love the way they discribe how you feel without water or when exposed to radiation. "You feel your skin falling of you body"
But the frekiest thing i red was in the corridor after the Catherdral boss "Suddenly a silver bone breaks tru the cealing penetrating your eye"
I wonder how do you become paladin? i tryed to first destroy the facility then go back to tBoS then i destroyed the Catherdral and went to tBoS nothing.. just "When the mutator threat is over you can assign to become a paladin"
Evah tryed going into teh close-combat training room then when a student leaves you go forward and beat the trainer down every 1 gets mad bah
I tryed cheating and i made myself like hulk in CC kinda fun watching enemies getting kicked away across the whole area heh or i broke their legs then their arms then blinding them and hitting in the groin and between teh rounds healing them up, watching em despratly trying to get away with 2 "steps" in a time.
oh and a last thing at the last boss try to convince him that mutants cant breed with the help of a tape you got from a scientist in tBoS. "This cant be..how?"-boss "maybe you need more test subjects?" "yes and il start with you" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Any 1 els wants fallout 3 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> ? oh btw have any of you tryed Fallout tactics? Sorry for being so random <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
EDIT: Just red that FO 3 will be finished!. or?
Oh yeah. Best weapon in the game. Get a critical in someone's eyball with that bad boy = death pretty much all of the time.
I'm kind of stuck on deciding whether I want to play it again or not right now, (I played it a bit gung-ho; I wanted to take a more intelligent approach), but there's a whole bunch of issues and bugs that are making me decide otherwise.
1. Inventory - Most. Painful. Inventory System.
Ever.
Most of the money I get is from selling weapons that I have no use for, I think I have over 55000 bottle caps right now, though its pretty much useless now that I'm on the last two missions. What's really irritating is the issue of weight and space. With the power armor that I now have, my strength comes to a total of 10, but I still have carrying problems right now, (I think the big culprit is the +700 fusion cells worth of ammo that I'm carrying) but seriously, its a major ***** to have to sell only a few items at a time, steal from your NPCs, grab a few more items, go back to the dealer, sell again, scroll all the way to the bottom to access the meagre amount of bottlecaps he/she possesses and take it, and repeat as necessary. I even tried to make things easier by unloading all the weapons I sold, because a gun carrying a different amount of ammo than another gets placed separately, so I have to drag through more crap I think the whole process can take from 20-30 mins, and its irritating that the dealers always have a limit to their own supply of bottlecaps, though I guess I should be lucky that they even have any money with the amount of sweeps I do on them. Thank God they fixed this in FO2, though.
Oh yeah, my NPCs decided to go on strike and refuse to carry any additional items for me. I took ONE grenade from Ktara (sp?), then decided to give it back to her, and it said that she didn't have room for it anymore.
WHAT THE DEUCE?
I also found out that I need to go all the way back to the hub to repurchase a specific holodisk for an alternate approach to the end game. And its not helping that I'm running out of space, *discards painting of Elvis*
I also ended up killing Tandi for using her as permanent NPC... suprisly that she outlived all my other NPCs when I went postal in finishing the game...
<b>Spoiler/Spoiler Request</b>
Could anyone tell me what was the good ending for the Followers and the Hub? I'm looking at the FAQ and the good ending is supposed to be "nothing". Like it skips even talking about the cities completely, or what? For some reason they are the only two cities that "died" when I finished the game, but every other city made it out fine...
<b>End spoiler</b>
Other than a lot of dialogue bugs, it was still a pretty fun game - crazy violence thats for sure - if you haven't already, make sure you play once with bad karma/Bloody Mess and finish the game - most brutal death EVER.
Still...
<b><span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>Planescape: Torment > Anything</span></b>
as for the inventory problem, it never really bothered me, outside of not being able to equip the NPCs exactly how I wanted... selling tons and tons of stuff WOULD be annoying, but I have to ask: why did you bother? what use do you have for those 55000 bottlecaps? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> I always sold just enough to carry enough ammo to progress; for me, there was no need to carry 700 fusion cells since with 10 perception, you can land one turbo plasma shot right in someone's eyes, generally vaporizing them, from a couple screens away... keep in mind, fusion cells are REALLY heavy...
oh, I just remembered, you don't have to bother carrying stuff to sell if you're not against using what some people would consider an exploit :> if you make the gun runner guy happy enough (and possibly have high charisma? I forget), you can sell stuff to him for more money than you buy stuff from him. in other words, infinite cash and equipment from who is probably the best vendor in the game...
Yea there is this mechanic at some point who says he needs some parts (which are dead easy to get), so just take them to him and get the car. In Fallout 2.
Fallout 2 is a very nice game. I actually own both of the Fallout games. I bought Fallout 1 from this little finnish game expo called Tilt Gameworld, but for my huge disappointment... IT WAS IN GERMAN. So now I have a german Fallout 1. Sure, I'm learning german, but I'm not yet good enough to really understand what they're saying completely. So I haven't played Fallout 1 yet <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> . Well, hopefully in few years as I learn more german I'll be able to play it (I'm not going to buy a new game just because I was dumb enough to buy a german one).
Oh best moment, running up to a mutant, punching him, and having half the guys body explode <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
