Customizeable Character

<div class="IPBDescription">I know, difficulty to impliment. But lets throw it out there!</div>One factor about a new game (Rainbow Six: Vegas) is the complete customability you have over the appearance of your character. You can change his armor, the color of the armor, the clothing under the armor, the color of the clothing, headgear, weapons, weapon gadgets, as well as facial hair, facial attributes (face camo, blood), the face appearence istelf - all with a wide array of selections.

I know this has difficulty of implimintation into the game, but because this is just a pen and paper idea theres no reason not to put it out in the spot light. Having a large amount of customability that really makes your player feel like <i>yours</i> appeals to a very large audience. Giving marines tattoos, scars, patches on their armor, slightly different armor types, options on their different weapons would be awesome! As well as giving aliens slight color differentiation, maybe a different tone of voice, ...unique growths, it all would be very fun to tool around with and add another fun element to the game.

<!--coloro:#00FF00--><span style="color:#00FF00"><!--/coloro-->I really like this idea. Haha, picture being a skulk, then running into some crazed marine with a tophat and a shotgun.

But, realisticly speaking, I don't think it would get implemented, only if they had some extra time on their hands or one of us figured it out for them.

More building on this idea: It could either be limited to a handfull of choices, or completely customisable (Definately adding server strain due to uploads/downloads). Colors would have to be limited. As hilarious as it seems to me, having a hot pink skulk/marine popping out of nowhere and dying instantly due to being a priority target, or another one being completely camoflaged to the enviorment due to color choices, could be pretty harmful. Make it so the player can only change apperance in the readyroom, when no round is taking place, or when they are not on a server.

As much as I enjoy the idea, I beleive it could easily be abused. Such as someone finding an invisible color/texture, especially in the case of customisable avatars.<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->

NS currently has two skins (?) for marines. It probably wouldn't be <i>too</i> much work to implement a few skins to be able to choose from that you could select as a sort of avatar within the game, for ease of recognizing you.

    I thinking about your says.

But man, this is REALLY BAD idea, invisible textures/colors ? small trouble .

Customizable caracters is a go0d idea.

I sat down a few seconds trying to figure out what you said, but after some time I gave up.

Personally i think they should implement a female Marine skin, that's all. Then again, this would be hard to include due to needs for voiceacting. animation etc etc.

how about just limiting customizing to armor color? for aliens certain parts of their body could use the custom color (just imagine a pink fade blinking around and cutting people in two!) yay!

having full customization of a character (facial hair, scars etc) is a very bad idea. remember when your marine dies, he isnt "resurrected" by an infantry portal, an entirely new marine is teleported from another TSA dropship, therefore his face and other features would be different.

i think limited customization would be ok, maybe different coloured armor or decals on the armor to specify their squadron insignia, maybe even generic tattoo's like the "death from above" tattoo's worn by "rico's roughnecks" in starship troopers... anything beyond that doesnt fit with the NS story.

Obviously it wouldn't be client side customization of the skin. Also customization would probably only be realistic to implement in terms of a few different faces and selecting armor colours from an in game colour palette. And perhaps being able to put a clan logo on your character, much like the spraylogo currently

    btw green must be your favorite colour? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

an idea i just had... having a large number on your back uniquely identifying your self for the game (00 to 99) I've always had trouble telling one player from another and large number would help.

    just a thought.

hmm I dunno, what is wrong with a Xhair over displaying name tooltip? Adding a number would make the marine team a football team <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

you'd get 10 different immature nubs chosing '69'

but you're right, there needs to be some way to slightly customize your model. so it stands out from the others...

it's not chosen, its assigned dynamically by the server. and yes i am aware of pointing at them, however, in the heat of combat, my mouse is positing elsewhere, I'd like to be able to call out to my team mates while still aiming.

They could always let us change minor things. Visors, arm patches, little additions to our weapons (like pointless laser sights and different magazine shapes), numbers for our characters. It would be cool.

The reason why the marines look all the same is that they are clones (One of the splash screens on NS 2.0 shows some cloning tubes i think)... Therefore only one voice actor is needed. As i said before we should add a female marine clone too. It is not that hard to skin, and you won't need lots of coding.

maybe the marines could be generated by a random set of attire, 4 different helmet designs, 4 breast plates, 4 arms, 4 legs... gives you 256 different marines...

sorry for the necro, but i was thinking about this today. having distinguishable marines/aliens would be a great feature for competitive games, especially on spectating/shoutcasting side of the things.

Especially in competitive games everybody would use the same style (the one that blend best with the background).

And being individual in your style would be a handicap during the game (for example red hair is easier to spot). But having a custom avatar while being in the Ready Room is a cool idea. Then a clan could use a custom design and really look like a football team entering an arena.

Hmm I'm pretty sure Flayra mentioned that he'd like the marines to be more customisable (in appearance at least) - to make them unique, to make them look more human.

The way I see it being implemented player-side, is you just bring up the steam community overlay, and where you change your name (like in TF2) you can change your marine appearance as well.

I like the idea, within limits for the reasons above: camo on your character is a bad thing, But there is no way the DEV's would do that, they are too smart. So we can all forget about that prob.

I would like to be able to alter my Marine within limits. As above: select between a number of different ethinic groups, either sex and a few different builds/heads. What I think should be completly free is your squad tags (clan logo) on your arms and maybe a crest on your brest plate for easy ID'ing of individual players. Now even if you do camo this area the rest of you would stick out like a sort thumb so there would be no real problems.

all we really need is our Steam pic to get plastered on our faces. That'll make sure you know who's who. <.< >.>

    OK, no pitchforks yet.

Anyways, minimal adjusting, like the face of the avatar, sounds kinda cool. Huge model differences should be reserved for stuff like classes (which, btw, I don't want in NS) since especially with different color schemes there can be big differences in advantages depending on your surroundings (see CS models).

Another cool idea is a few few unlock able during the match skills. While this doesn't change the avatar appearance, it's kinda a fun system to feel like "you know, I've gotten lots of combat experience, I should get a small boost to X". See Empires Mod for how they do it.

This is NS2 so if the devs what they can simply say that it is set 50 years on from NS one and there are new clone lines.

I'll bet that with NS1 it went like this

DEV1: Man, finnished the second marine model finnialy.
DEV2: We need to get more work on the alien anamations when will you be finnished with the other 5?
DEV1: At this rate with my 9-5 job so I can eat......some time next month!
DEV2: Screw that, how about we say they are all clones?
    DEV1: Sweet!

    Not:

DEV1: Man, finnished the 10th marine model finnialy after all that work.
DEV2: I've been thinking, they should all be clones so lets scrap models 3-10
DEV1: Come here so I can hit you with this bit of 4x2

So if they have the time and will to put in extra models sweet, if not I can deal.

I think more at a random choice for every marines coming from IP...
We have now 2 skins models, but one or two differences more can add a little more enjoyment and tough let the time to devteam to work on the really important stuff...
Maybe can we wait the updates to think at this and faster get a nice game XD

And for marines, high number of personalizations must be weird... A military organisation can't let have all soldiers differents armors... But tough the TSA calls for all help during an operation, then why not differents sections of TSA couldn't be called? With some differents regular uniforms...
This aspect can be apllied random during normal game with limit (not a whole zoo of differents marines during an operation) and maybe choose for a whole team during a match with a bit more details...
Customize a whole squad of TSA mens have sens but each others differents... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Theres no need for transparent textures. You can just limit the file formats permitted to formats without alpha channels, or you could do something more complex and exploitable. Either way should be fine.

    @ Recupel

Yeah, but that's not to say that the TSA can't give their soldiers a selection of equipment to choose from, or that the equipment itself isn't customisable. (eg. the "retracting" helmet idea)
