I live in Australia. Christmas means pools, a barbeque and stealing beer from the esky. However, since we're hosting this year, it'll just mean a barbeque, trying to hide from my incredibly annoying relatives, and stealing beer from my dad.

I used to love Christmas but this year, I hate it.
I hate it because for the first time in my life, I will be alone at Christmas and with almost no money. All my familly is leaving in another city. My current job didn't supply the holliday schedule until the very last minute last Thursday (was my last night shift day of the year). So I only have this Monday, Dec-25 as officialy off but geting back to work on Dec-26. I will also work on Jan-1st. Because we didn't know our schedule, that threw away all our plans in the trash.
Because of the schedule problem, my wife (not married but been together for 15 years so I consider her as my wife) went out tonight to some friends and will be coming back on Tuesday. They had invited her 4 weeks ago and she agreed. Back then, I told her I was suspecting to work at Christmas and told her to go ahead and accept their invitation.
I have no Christmas decorations at home, nor any kind of holliday music. This year, Xmas simply sucks for me. In fact the whole 2006 year is kinda my worst year ever. In February, I lost my 10 year job where I was making $32/hour as mainframe application support. The whole mainframe market died here in Montreal Canada. It took me 6 months to find any kind of computer related job I could do. I am working on a 12 months contract at IBM for Tivoli software distribution at $14.90/hour and on shift rotation every 2 weeks. I am wasting my time and talent on that contract but things are starting to light up. In the past 2 weeks, I have been contacted by 6 different companiges for mainframe related jobs. Looks like the mainframe job market is finaly waking up. I even have one possible job where I will be the most knowledged person at a company and to top it all, I'm the only candidate ! But as 2006 isn't over yet, it has been 2 weeks and I still didn't get an answer from the client for the final interview. This year, I asked Santa that the only thing I want for Xmast, is this job so we could start living again, having a decent life and perhaps have happiness back in our life.

do you actually hate christianity as an idea, or the people that follow the idea? i completely understand having a certain dislike for the so-called christians. but i have no problem with the idea of christianity, just like i have no problem with the idea of any religion. i might think they are wrong but thats just a matter of perspective. and having a different perspective in no way warrants hatred.
and if its the christians you hate, i see no reason for that hatred to passed up to the man who created what they believe just because they dont know how to follow his teachings. a man who, from what we all hear, did nothing but good, im sure had no intention of all the hatemongering that tends to come from christians.
if you look at the completely simplified version of christ's teachings it basically says dont be a jackass. whats so wrong with that?
as im sure youve assumed by now, yes i follow Jesus Christ. but that doesnt mean i follow him blindly because he is the suppose son of God, or savior and whatnot. i follow him because he taught good things, and since ive begun to do my best to act as he would, my life has done nothing but improve.
what you believe is up to you, and i choose not to argue with people about beliefs because theres not enough hard evidence in the world to prove one thing over another.

I hate christmas, this christmas especially.
This is the first christmas after my parents officially split up. They're not talking to each other. Their respective families aren't talking to each other (not that they ever did). So my mom's family is in isolation from my dad's, and vice versa. Both, however, want me there on christmas day. I can't drive, the houses are too far apart from each other to travel between them on a bus, train or catch a cab (since it'd cost an absolute fortune) and both parents refuse to take me to the other one (or pick me up FROM the other one), and I can't drive (never bothered getting a provisional even, and since I'm in Uni in London, there's even less point getting a car, especially since I live on campus and there's a free bus between campuses). My dad's been screaming at me down the phone, and my mom's been crying almost solidly for two weeks (literally).
Also I hate the present system. I honestly got flack last year from someone in my family because they got a present worth £10, but someone else got one worth £15. I mean, jesus, I'm a jobless student, what do you expect, a Jaguar?

Already considered. Aside from the fact that all of my friends will be with THEIR families on christmas day, I think that'd cause more harm than going to one would.
I love Commercial Christmas (not Christian Christmas), I love the commercialism, I love the shopping for gifts for friends and loved ones, or even the time spend making gifts (such as the duct tape purse for my friend).
I love giving people stuff, I like getting it in return. Yay capitalism.
I love watching Peanuts specials on TV. I love wearing my Santa hat.
As a matter of fat, the only part of Christmas that I dislike is all the Jesus stuff and movies like "The Nativity Story". Christmas should be like it is in Japan, a purely commercial event.
And 6john, you don't have to practice a religion surrounding a guy who died 2000 years ago to not be a jackass. I try pretty hard to be good to people, and not be a jackass, and I believe in nothing. I don't need to be threatened with the prospect of burning in a hell that was invented 1500 years after Christ's crucification, or bribed with Heaven to be a good person. Religion is outdated.

but back to the subject, i hate the commercialism aspect of christmas. i love the fact that its about giving, but it seems like its getting to the point where its more about buying than giving.

Christmas is easy to love.
Hate the commercialism? Don't buy into it then. I remember that one year I gave everyone I knew a picture of me giving them two thumbs up. That's it. There was no whining or moaning because everyone I know is smart enough to realize that christmas is a headache if you scurry around.
This year? I went to a mall for two nights. Not with a list or even any ideas. Just kinda browsing and picking up stuff for people that I thought they'd like. And for the people I didn't find something for? A couple extra exchanges of well wishing words and we were square.
And yes I've got my fair share of relatives I loathe and mom&dad issues. But if you just throw away the BS fakery and accept a day of hanging out with your blood relatives then it's just another day.
Anyone that gives you crap that is in any way related to christmas doesn't get it.

Just celebrate sol invictus, the unconquered sun. Celebrating at this time of year is ancient, much older than christianity - why else would we celebrate christmas now when Jesus was born in March?
At this time of year, people celebrated the unconquered sun. The encroaching darkness was defeated, and once again the days would become longer and longer as night receded.
Be with your family if you can stand them. Or be with friends, or other loved ones. Drink, eat, be merry. That's the essence of this celebration. Tack religion onto it if you like, or don't.
If you're a little depressed, remember it's not the end of the world. Darkness commonly has that effect on the human psyche. Remember, the sun's coming back now. Tomorrow, take a walk outside when it's light.

I live in Florida and haven't had a white Christmas in 30 years.
