Nice Mod But...

At first I would like to tell the developers that they did a really good job and natural selection is really worth a play.
New and good ideas are indeed what we need but I have a single question to the developers:
Why did you choose the Half-Life-Engine for NS?
When I look at the huge levels and the various textures I'm really impressed because I know how much time such a work needs but wouldn't the mod look so much better with an other engine like the Q3-Engine?
You really did well but I think the game doesn't have the looks to become such an All-time-favourite like CS or Day of Defeat.
It's too late for that <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Comments
CS for example does not look much like a half-life mod because of the increased model quality.
Besides I think that with THIS mod you could have gathered a lot of players as well, if you had chosen th Q3-Engine.

ill answer u
this mod would have felt and played diffrently on Q3
not better
but worst
HL has that certin feeling that Q3 dosent have
and besides the mod looks great just as DoD and CS (if not more)
as for why HL here are a few I remember
1) modding comunity is realy supported (hell thats all HL is any more realy)
2) HUGE played base
3) will run on nearly ANY machine (god I love you guys for this)
4) as some one said, the project started well before UT2K3, doom3 etc were release (even thought of being released)
@BigEye: You are competely wrong... Ever played Medal of Honor? It is based on the Q3-Engine but it's completely different...
By the way you should consider that the HL-Engine itself is based on the Q2-Engine. And we don't have to discuss what Q2 "feels" like, do we?
The graphics in NS are vastly superior to the graphics in CS. Sorry, Ahab.. Show me some of your 3D modelling and animatino work, so I know you're qualified to judge, and I'll be happy to debate the various qualitative points with you.
Hurray.
Anyway, the HL engine works rather well for what NS does IMAO. I don't see what the beef is.
Not only think i that Natural Selection looks much more impressive than Counter-Strike (IMO) but that Half-Life is build on Q2 is simply not true.
Look at the following Link to read an official statement to the "What-Was-Before-Half-Life" Question:
<a href='http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?doc=1028244478-62628500' target='_blank'>Quake 1 or 2?</a>
If you compared the beta 1.0 releases of NS, CS, and DoD, NS would blow the others out of the water in terms of visual quality.
This mod is in its first release. Give it some time. Compared to all the other first release mods i have played this one is the best.
Half Life was most likely chosen to make this mod, not because of the graphics, but because the ease of use and the support Valve gives to the modding community.
Cos CS Level textures and details look much better than ns, in ns ns when u get up close its like a load of big 1m blocks of colours!!!
Dont get me wrong ns is a good and worthwhile game but i still think as soon as this craze is over its bak 2 cs 4 most people
Whos talking about wolfinestine now heh! Its going to be the same for battlefield and maybe 4 ns the only reason for ns to stay popular is its link to HL
But in the end were all going to go bak to our beloved CS!!!
(Please note this is only an Hypotheses curtisy of some dumb **obscenity**) <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Wether the HL-Engine was based on Q1 or Q2: It was based on a Q-Engine and that was the point.
I never said the graphics aren't good but they are of course not up to date and that is why I asked if the developers plan to make some improvements to it! Got it?
I even think NS to be better than CS and DOD but not because of the graphics.
(good graphics + excellent gameplay) < (very good graphics + excellent gameplay), right?
@Bog: I'm just a mapper <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
If I was to bounce up and down saying "Engine, engine!" then what'd really float my boat would be using something like Tenebrae, which supports stencil shadows and per-pixel shading, so you could (A) have all those lovely bumpmaps and glossmaps on the game surfaces and (B) add to the Fear Factor with wildly shifting shadows.
any other engine will change the entrie gameplay
and i like NS as it is so this converstion is stupid
Viloence Jack youre so right
and HL is kinda Thin
but most quality mods changed that
Unreal/ UT / UT2K engine --> UTTERLY MARRED by poor support and a scripting engine that just doesn't cut it for truly complicated mods, and a truly horrible, proprietary, map editor... Also, no option to go commercial. Smaller playerbase. Once its out, development on the engine itself ceases.
Quake 3 Engine --> Terrible 'you're on your own' support from the team when it comes to mods. Quake3 code has no inherent lag-compensation support. It also doesn't work on all machines well. It also doesn't support hitboxes and oddly shaped models without wierdness. Etc etc etc etc... its designed for nice big bouncy deathmatchy games. Even if the decision was made right now, I would still say half-life. Also, no option to go commercial. Reasonable playerbase but only 1/10th of the size of the CS/HL/DOD/FA playerbase... Quake3 was stale from the moment it was released in that the developers stopped making stuff for it / improving it besides a few bugfixes and optimizations.
Half-Life Engine --> Built in lag-comp support for marine guns. Built in VGUI for commander mode. Rock solid netcode thats tried and tested for over 2 years. Support from Valve for modders. Oodles of mod making tools, third party mapping programs, example code. Option to go commercial with the help of Valve. Code wise, extremely well defined clientside / serverside divide. Good testing tools. HUGE player base. Very compatible. Extremely moddable. And obviously, it doesn't look at all that bad, either! Not only that, but it's still being updated and developed and patched by Valve, they've added tons of stuff to do with netcode / skeletal animation, and more is planned like Steam, etc.
If people are choosing an engine to make a complicated mod in, even today, I would still suggest Half-Life. And I'm not surprised that the NS team selected it way back when they started.

ns is NOT beta. it is release 1 just like cs is now release 1.5.

If you compared the beta release of NS and the CURRENT releses of all other mods NS would STILL kick butt!
2 Cents

Doubt it very much.
Battlefield 1942 is just too amazing and I doubt it will become unpopular.
NS is the best concept for an HL mod out, it looks great and the gameplay is massive. Plus look at the many MANY people who are giving it support. If anything I'll end up leaving CS to play NS.
NS Stratiges: Get in that vent, wait, evolve, acid rocket and bile bomb there base while your team owns the rest of the map!
Well I could get into all the complexities but I'm sure most of you get my drift!
So if any of you plan on going back to CS at some point, go now because you are just hindering the rest of us from getting good..
I now exactly what you mean BigEye... it is this smooth feeling when you run, it is ths punch that kicks around your view when you get hit or shot and the sounds play a role too but as you can see in Medal of Honor it can be done to change an "Arcade"-Engine like the Q3-Engine into a more realistic form.
Of course I do not doubt what the people here say concerning the technical terms, they'll know better than me but thats why I asked.
I mean, in CS your rescuing hostages and shooting Terrorists, in NS your eating Marines and making alien blood as your new rust remover. DoD your shooting Nazi's and so forth, so gameplay wise you can't really compare IMO.
As far as mapping textures, I think NS is superior to ANY HL MOD, many may disagree but they are fantastic, I also think the player models are superior as well. I do however, think the weapon models could use some slight work, but thats just a minor detail, and thats why we have model sites open eventually right:)?
But really, NS differs SO much from other MOD's, that I can't really see how you can compare them. But thats just me I suppose.
