Constant Crashes In Hl2

MulletMullet Join Date: 2003-04-28 Member: 15910Members, Constellation
<div class="IPBDescription">Steam forums suck</div> Okay so basically I just upgraded my old computer (P4 2.4ghz) to a 3200+. Since then, HL2 is ALWAYS crashing! Here is the error I get:

<img src='http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/8316/wth2xt.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

I've tried adding the larger heapsize command and that does nothing. Does anyone else have this problem?

Man I tried googling the error but I'm not really getting anything. Mullet, the best I can suggest to you now would be a reinstall. That or just messing around with your settings.

@Thansal: Nah well I'm just messing with you anyway. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> At least you're not as horrible as Dragonmech, who feeds off the New Player forum for extra posts.

This happens to me in every Source engine game, but it seems to be almost inevitable in CS:S, whereas in HL2DM it's rare enough to be a surprise every time.

No idea WTH the problem is.

It's a memory leak issue last I heard. Only happens to me in Hidden.

It's either a memory leak or it's something to do with how your computer loads models and meshes and textures.

My understanding from the Steam forums is that Valve and ATI are in cahoots to make it as hard as possible for Nvidia card owners to run the game. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hey if you find anything id like to know, ive got the same problems, AGP 6800, and with rolled back drivers (71.89) and the latest drivers (77.72) it gives me the same errors.

Ive updated all other drivers, checked my RAM, Reinstalled HL2 several times, checked the chache via steam, and searched steam forums for 3 days.

Check the voltage your motherboard gives your ram.
I had exactly the same problem when i installed new ram.
My board gave them 2.7V although they were built for 2.5V
and as you can think, they didn´t like being toasted thuis producing exactly the same error as the one you posted.

You bios options should give you this knowledge somewhere.
If thats not the problem you can reun a free ramtester, to see if anything is hardcore broken
    i found <a href='http://hcidesign.com/memtest/' target='_blank'>this one</a> very good, yet easy to use

    We've confirmed its NVidia.

Mullet: I rolled back and experienced no degredation in graphics. Did you even play it on the ol' drivers?

Really, you get the same problem? Hmm. Maybe its not NVidia exclusive. But rolling back my drivers fixed it...
  • cshank4cshank4 Join Date: 2003-02-11 Member: 13425Members
I get the same problem in some mods and I have an ATI card. It's a glaring problem with how your video card reports texture memory usage I do belive (after studying when the error pops up). Too bad Valve won't work on really any of their broken stuff, although the stutter problem has been fixed, surprisingly.
  • CMEastCMEast Join Date: 2002-05-19 Member: 632Members
Nope, not just Nvidia it's everyone. Luckily I have 1gb DDR2 or I probably wouldn't even bother to play the game.

I to have an ATi card and have this problem. It's a drag, but fortunately there's nothing good enough on Source engine to justify me giving myself a technical headache trying to fix it. It'll wait till NS:S comes out.
