So they're kinda like tyranids but not as weird? :p
I had an eldar and tyranid army both of which never lost a single battle. Half the time I'd win out of stupendous feats of luck though which made me giggle ^^
Things like my hive tyrant taking 10 wounds of damage and then healing every single on of them with it's regeneration so it was back to full health, a spore mine landing amongst a terminator squad and the librarian along with half the terminators failing all their rolls, my warp spiders being hit by 3 flamers and surviving without a single unit lost... fun times :3
Nids were the only other army that could consistenly rocked my DEs, if played right.
And now.... they can have 9 (yeah.. 9) biowarves (or whatever - the big nut sack guys)
Spore mines = Instant glancing hit against opened top vechiles.
Seeing how thats all my army is I get rocked like no tomorrow by those things.
*edit* btw - that model I linked to has a the "shadowfield" upgrade.
You probably dont know that that is - it's a 2+ Invul save. One time, an entire IG platoon shot at my lord - 24 shots - he saved every single one. The catch is, once the shadowfield is down (rolling a 1) its gone.
wow... sounds like they really refined the rules a lot :o
Do the games play lots faster now? One of the problems with the old system is that any decent-sized battle took all day. Not that having friends around that long was bad but it's nice to do more than just play a single match of 40k all day ^^;
And that's just the four turn games...that scenario with the six turns took <i>yonks</i>. (I stopped playing before Third Edition came out. I couldn't afford it, and now I don't know anyone who plays it.)

I only ever had one friend who played 40K, and he had an Ork army. One time when I got the Virus Outbreak strategy card, I ended up wiping out over half of his Boyz before the game even started.

Guys... WARHAMMER here, not 40k, WARHAMMER. Focus.
I think i'll have to be a dwarf, just because dwarves kick so much arse in general.
As others have said, WH40K online wouldn't work seeing as the empires are pretty much all constantly at war with each other. In the warhammer world however, there is more of a "these ones are the good guys, these ones are the bad guys" sort of thing going on.
Although I still honestly don't know how this is going to work; are they going to have 2 factions, WoW style? If so, I don't see how Orcs, Chaos and Undead are going to fit into any alliance; sure they're all evil, but then they also fight each other all the time. The High Elves, Wood Elves, Empire, Bretonnians and Dwarves might ally, but I can't see undead and orcs doing the same without some severe storyline butchery.
I predict suckage. I don't want it to suck, I just think that it's going to.

My friends and I play with 1850 points (the standard for any tourney) and, depending on how lame we want to be, the game at max goes for only an hour or so. Also, if you really want to hug the rule book nonstop you are supposed to roll at turn 4 (I think) to see if the game goes on 1 more round, then another on turn 5 to see if it goes to turn 6, then it just stops dead at turn 6. We usually never played with that rule ( i remember reading it somewhere ) but usually at the end of turn 6 one person is so screwed its obvious.
A few times we did some dumb things like 5,000 points vs 5,000 points - those take about 2 and half hours...
As for 40k not working in MMO form because it has more than 2 factions... wha? o.O Did I just totally miss the fact that Dull Ages of Camelot and Planetside have 3?
I think an MMO with 5 factions would be refreshing :3 Could be imperial (guard and marines), eldar, chaos (chaos and DE), orks and tau or whatever :3
The unplayed factions could just be played by the computer (necron and tyranids make ideal badguys)
As for warhammer online it'll probably just be similar to the "Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay" game (which I have the rulebook for funnily enough :p)
fantasy aint as cool <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The problem with Warhammer Online is that it probably won't be like Warhammer at all. If it WERE like Warhammer, I would play an Orc. Killing stuff non-stop until you get killed yourself. Fun. ^_^

I'd expect something more like Necromunda as a MMO game. It's not like he needs experience points nor equipment. <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->As for warhammer online it'll probably just be similar to the "Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay" game (which I have the rulebook for funnily enough <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Is that Warhammer Quest? nope, warhammer quest is warhammer quest funnily enough :p I was talking about Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Google it if you want.
The rulebook (which is all you need to play) I have is published by hogshead publishing but I think GW have their own internal publisher now who does it called black works... but I might be getting it the wrong way around :3
I can see what you mean about them not wandering about alone to some degree regarding 40k, but that's only because your'e thinking of them on the battlefield. I'm sure they usually have time to wander around on their own back on their base.
Besides, you could just make it a sorta wargame MMO :o
Being a Space Marine back on base would also be pretty dull for most chapters.
01:00 - wake up 01:05 - flagellate self in name of Emperor 02:00 - morning church service 10:00 - breakfast 10:10 - training 13:00 - small break to flagellate self in name of Emporer 13:10 - back to training 17:00 - dinner 17:10 - evening church service 21:00 - supper 21:10 - HUGSIES 21:11 - bedtime
One of the problems with 40k is some armies rely on numbers more than others. Being IG and going up against a Space Marine would kind of suck, not to mention that each side would probably have even numbers. They would have to put AI in the game and let you control a little squad as IG.. which would actually be kind of cool.
By all means if they just heavily modified the template Planetside has set out and proven to work it would be possible to have 40k online. Difficult and long to make, but possible, and very very kickass.
It would have to use something like the BF2 squad system. The whole squad thing in 40K is sacrosanct.
I'd be happy with a much bigger version of BF2, with even more emphasis placed on squads and the ranking system. You earn Wargear points, some items being reserved for commanders/squad leaders. The main problem would be getting everything in...
