Soap and Co. - Which server do you guys frequent? I wouldn't mind actually playing somewhere with teamwork for a change. All the servers I find myself in are mindless zerg rushes and TK fests. =/

#nsbf2 on Gamesurge, we don't really frequent specific servers.

This game is tons of fun. I'm working my way through the basic medals; I'm on support right now after getting 3 others. I just wish I could play with some of you guys; pub squads are really hit and miss. "Please attack a flag. Any flag. There's nothing on our carrier but sadness." Add "tychocelchu" to X-Fire or something. It's a good supplement to #nsbf2 from which I have been unbant after discontinuing the haikus on these forums

so I've gotten a lot of badges, I've gotten a lot of ribbons. Now I finally see why I have no medals besides g/s/b stars...

they require, depending on the medal, between 500 and SIX THOUSAND hours of playtime. Aww, aren't they cute, thinking I'll spend 6,000 hours on their one game.

let's say playing BF2 was your job. You'd have to play 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 2 years to even have a shot at that medal.

I really hope I remember this game ever existed in 2 or 3 years, so I can investigate whether anyone actually pulled it off. then I can cry for him, softly into the night.

The real question:
Is a medal a good way to evaluate skill?

If it truly isn't (and I don't think it is), then why do people bother getting them? What's the point if you don't play for fun?

edit: my favorite thing just happened. I just won the game for the USMC, had twice the points of the next best person in the game... and I got TK'd as we hunted down the last survivor, so it switched me to the MEC. yeah, I totally deserved to be on the losing team. of course, next game I play, I start doing the same thing for the other team, singlehandedly rocketing them toward victory... so the game crashes on me without so much as an error message. RAWR!

another pet peeve: I have a heated tank duel with an enemy tank, the thing is on fire and is about to explode, and someone grazes it with some random shot and gets credit for the kill -_- whoever sets the thing on FIRE should get the credit for the kill :>

so, is corporal officially at 10k, 11k, or 10.5k? I hear mixed reports... I'm at 9.4k and it's going so slow now -_-

I wanna unlock my DAO cannon!

edit: another important advantage of the medic class that I forgot to mention: you basically get your own private UAV when there are friendlies around. When they get pwned, voila! you have a little red lightning bolt on your minimap telling you where the bad guys are :> I'm an eevil medic, I rarely help teamies, I just use their deaths for my own nefarious plans...

I made Corporal! w00t!
I unlocked the M95.
And before you ask "wth, man, why the M95? That thing is so much worse than X"
The reason is... Im good with it. Every time I stole one from the enemy team, things got real messy real fast.
So now I just dont need to steal one anymore.
And just so you know, I got my promotion to Corporal at around 10500

congrats :>

wonder if I could get 1k points today...

some random tips for being the ultimate ground-based Rambo:

grab a vehicle and don't let go unless it's about to asplode. Hog that vehicle, be it a tank, APC, basically anything but the FAV - that thing is all but useless for kills since the guns don't swivel more than 45 degrees or so. choose a vehicle and re-get it every time you die, or see what other vehicles are spawned while you wait your 15 seconds. I don't care if you want to spawn closer to the action. what's better - spawning and getting thrashed within 20 seconds, or having to drive an extra 45 seconds to stay alive for 10 kills? the only exception is when you're defending a flag and you know exactly what and where is there. spawn on them and pwn them.

unless you're playing with friends, being a team player is not your first priority. I don't care if this is a team-based game, and there are squads, and the vehicles have passenger slots, etc. face it: unless you know who you're playing with and you know they're good, your teammates will just get in your way, steal your vehicles, clog up the gunner position(s) when you need them, jump out and get themselves run over by you and then punish you, drive you into a river or off a cliff, steal your kills, not kill anything, etc. of course you should help out when it's convenient - like if you're in a tank and you're a medic, pause by the guy who needs health... but don't get out to revive some shlub just to get killed yourself, or have him steal your tank -_-

start your own squad and abuse the commander. request supplies and UAVs every 2 seconds, because god knows you'll make better use of them than everyone else - and most comms will be happy to oblige because it gives them points to supply you and stuff - repair points, resupply points, heal points, etc... and if you ever play commander, you know hardly anyone ever requests anything, so you never know where things are needed and end up dropping crap randomly - it's nice as a comm to know where you're needed once in a while. of course you shouldn't spam the commander though. it's easy to get a sense for how long it takes for his abilities to reload, so wait 'til then. wait til the current UAV is finished to request a new one, for instance.

err on the side of caution. know what you're driving into. don't drive into a crowded base to get instapwned. stay on the fringes, and shoot anything you see as soon as you see it. if you're in a hummer, for god's sake don't just ram that tank because you think you have nothing better to do. flee, go to another flag, or hide til the tank leaves.

the basic technique that gets the job done: roll into a flag and immediately ask for a UAV. if you get one, you know where to shoot; if not, rotate til you see bad guys and shoot em. if you're in a hummer, switch to the gunner position, obviously, and as soon as you hear that missile beep, evacuate and do what you can on foot. hardly anyone likes the AT class for some reason though, so most of the time you get to mow down all the spec ops zergs who run blindly at your car with their bombs out. if you're in a tank, take a sec to blow up any TOW missiles around, so no one hops in and annihilates you while your back is turned.

know your weapons, and use them all. I only play medic and AT, and sometimes support when I know I'm gonna be spawning into heavy infantry presence, or engineer when I need to fix a bridge or something. know which of your weapons are good at what ranges, and what your strengths and weaknesses are. if you run out of ammo in the middle of a firefight out in the open, don't sit there under fire and reload. switch to your pistol and finish him off. much of this should be common sense but I never cease to be amazed at the idiocy I see.

that's all I can think of right now. of course if you prefer playing in a squad on foot and have more fun doing that, by all means do it. If you're a skilled flyboy, do that. This is just how I personally get a lot of gold stars, and have a lot of fun in the process. :>

Become a medical maniac. Just find a group of guys on foot and follow them around, healing them and reviving as neccesary.

I once got over 115 general points in a single game because I followed a group of soldiers (two assaults, a spec ops & one antitank) as a medic. We just roamed the map, killing at will. It was awesome - we obliterated the enemy artillery, three tanks, a chopper, half a dozen jeeps/buggies/APCs and dozens of footsoldiers. Naturally I got dozens of revive and heal points in the process and we dominated that round. ^^
