Forum game
This is a game music guessing game.

How it's going to work is I'll post a link to the first 30 seconds of a track from a game, and you guys post where you think it comes from. When someone gets it, I'll post the next song (and say who got it).

The Details:

In terms of points, it's usually 1 point for getting the name of the game and an additional point for knowing where in the game. I'm pretty flexible about the definition of "where". Here's the thing, though: if one person correctly identifies the game but can't quite remember where in the game it stays open for anyone else to get. That's the general idea. If there are any bonus points to be got I'll mention them when I post the link, and I'll update this post to reflect the scoreboard.

Wherever possible, the music is directly from the game. In other cases it's (unfortunately) recorded from midi versions. I'll mention when I post if the file was originally a midi. Hopefully in most cases it won't make a difference.

There won't be more than one track from the same game. There might be more than one game from the same series, however.

PC games only. It's also kind of biased towards older games.

If nobody gets a song after about a day or so, I'll move right on to posting the next one (the old one stays open).

The Tracks:

Le Chuck's Theme from The Secret of Monkey Island (game guessed by NeonSpyder, track guessed by flintlock).

"Radio" from Command & Conquer (game and title guessed by Stewie).

Cavelems from Lemmings 2 (game and title guessed by Nil IQ).

"Run Like Smeg" from Rise of the Triad (MIDI) (game guessed by Luukas, track guessed by Darten, but we're still kind of arguing over it so 1 pt still available).

"Warpath" from Total Annihilation (game and title guessed by Pulse).

Mission music from Mechwarrior 2 (game guessed by pieceofsoap, bonus point for detail).

Kurast Docks from Diablo 2 (game and title guessed by pieceofsoap).

"Conquest" from Age of Empires (game guessed by HellspawnUK, title guessed by Darten).

Persephone's Realm from Sacrifice (game guessed by Stewie, track guessed by Grendel).

Theme from Betrayal at Krondor (game guessed by Luukas, bonus point for detail).

Non-combat track from Dune 2 (game and context guessed by Luukas).

"Diabolical Adrenaline Guitar" from Half-Life (game guessed by LazyEye, context guessed by Ratonetwothreetwoone).

"Kerner Steals the Statue" from Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (game guessed by Asal The Unforgiving, track guessed by Luukas).

Human mission music from Warcraft (game guessed by Nil IQ, context guessed by Luukas).

Title theme from Natural Selection (game and context guessed by Stewie).

Briefing music from Wing Commander 2 (game and context guessed by Luukas).

"Rock It" (title theme) from Major Stryker (game and context guessed by Nil IQ).

LINCspace from Beneath a Steel Sky (game and context guessed by Status Quo).

Launch music from Wing Commander Privateer (game guessed by Darten, context unguessed).

"Quad Machine" from Quake 2 (game guessed by DOOManiac, plus a point for detail).

Training simulator (inflight) from Tie Fighter (game guessed by Pulse, context guessed by Luukas).

Theme from Loom, originally from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake (afaik) (unguessed).

Horde mission music from Warcraft 2 (game and track guessed by Darten).

Map theme from Sam & Max Hit The Road (game and context guessed by myrigth)

Non-combat music from Morrowind (game guessed by Status Quo, context guessed by Pulse).

Ornithopter music from Dune (game and context guessed by Marsh).

Combat music from X-Wing (game and context guessed by DiscoZombie).

Combat music from Strike Commander (unguessed)

"Running From Evil" from Doom 2 (game and context guessed by Darten).

I was thinking the first Age Of Empires game, but I'm not sure ... the song sounds so familiar

I thought it was AoE at first, too - but those last few seconds were definately not from that track from AoE.

Is it a C64 game? It does sound familiar...the only games it makes me think (atm) of are Wizball and Marble Madness, but I don't think it's them.

That first one(from Monkey Island) is for whenever they go to LeChucks Ghost Ship right?
  • SoulSkorpionSoulSkorpion Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 423Members

Nope... it's not AoE. I don't know if it was released on any platforms other than the PC, but I recorded it off the PC version sitting on my hard disk at the moment.

Possibly the music for the Cavelem tribe in Lemming's 2. The melody is right but the actual "instruments" sound different; i'm guessing this is from the PC version, if i'm right. I played the Amiga version.

Obscure music FTW! I would have gotten either of the other 2... shame I wasn't here in time.

Hmmm familiar enough that I recognise it, obscure enough that I'm never quite going to get it... how frustrating

New track added. It's recorded from a MIDI this time, but as far as I know it was originally a MIDI in the first place.

This is awesome, but I can't guess the last one. What could I use to make clips? I think I could add some cool entries.

<edit>Just read about the PC dilly, don't have any PC game songs.</edit>

Hm.. I guess that last one was harder than I thought.

    Ok, moving on...

TA is right. The tracks only had names retroactively (it was never in the game), so no bonus point (sorry ).

    Next one added.

#4 is definately from Rise of the Triad. I'd hazard a guess that it was used in the demo somewhere... can't be more accurate as it's been so many years since I touched RotT, and I wasn't even a fan.

    edit:

SoulSkorpion, should you run out of tunes, I have a reasonable collection of PC game music in various formats (midi, flac and anything in-between).

Last one is from Mechwarrior 2 / Ghost Bear's Legacy (They had the same Musical scores)

    /EDIT
Also, this track is repeated through several missions, in both MW2 and GBL, so it cant be tied to any specific mission.

    /EDIT2
Aha! Also, it is Track #9 on the CD, and lasts 1 minute and 45 Seconds.

Thanks for the offer. I should be ok for the moment, I've got some 20 or so already waiting in reserve to be uploaded.

While we're at it, if anyone's curious, I used Audacity to edit these tracks, and also to record most of them myself.

Record, as in used a mic & speakers? Or does Audacity have some tool that allows you to dump anything being played into a wave file?
