Internet Problems

So I just reformatted, and we all know that brazilian teenagers like to **** with your compy when it's most voulnerable.

So the problem is my internet. I usually only get at most 25k/s at most from places I would normally get <200.

So my settings haven't been toyed with (by me), and it did work for a day or so at max speed. So is it possible for a virus to limit my net? I did shut down some strange processes (hwclock.exe, pretty discreet genious) and I downloaded Norton (barely).

The problem is I cant update my definitions because the updater times out before I finish the 2 megs. Any idea what virus it might be so I could just download the remover, or perhaps I just am doing something wrong?

Help plzkthx

*edit*

Oh and why do I have 6 instances of svchost.exe running?

Correction to Mintman, 5 svchost.exe processes running is normal.
6 is not. It might be a program has made a unique call to svchost, and started it again, but 6 is not a normal configuration.

Remember, some viruses will modify the service host, causing the PC to be totally un-disinfectable. Hope that doesn't happen in this case.

Download <a href='http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1' target='_blank'>AVG Free</a>, and <a href='http://www.lavasoft.com/' target='_blank'>Ad-Aware SE</a>, install both, run updates for both, and RUN BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

We are starting to see varients of viruses that have spyware links, and can either one and restart the other's process.

    25K/s isn't particularly slow, if the K unit is KB. 25KB/s = 200Kb/s
Check for viruses, and also fire up the Task Manager, skip over to the "Networking" Tab, don't open any programs that will use t'Internet, and see what usage your internet connection has. It will sit at 0% if you've got no internet using programs open. If you're getting a heavy usage, then check to see if Windows is updating itself, or any other program for that matter...

So I managed to manully upgrade norton and scanned my windows folder for viruses, of which there were 10. Deleted em all and still having problems.

I did have Ad-Aware already and had run it a few times. I'll try running them both at the same time now.

    Christ this R the sux. Cant participate in the WoW tests <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Make sure that you disable System Restore, then run a full scan of your hard drive.

Normally, when a virus gets removed, the file is normally marked as system, to exploit System Restore, which will take a backup of the file, then allow your AV software to remove the file. System appears to disinfect, but te virus then launches from System Restore, which no AV software can remove it from.

I don't know how many times I have said this but AVG is 10000x better then Norton, and its free. I'm not sure where everyone is getting norton is so good, but it obviously isn't. I have had AVG pick up stuff that norton skips over.

Download AVG, uninstall nortin, install AVG, and woot, you is done.

(Spybot and Ad-aware compliment each other very nicely, but I find that MS anti-spyware does the job of both easier.)

Truth comes from above me ^_^

Cyn, the problem is called "Brand Association". Much in the same way as Heinz is associated with Baked Beans, and Nike with Trainers, Norton is the brand name associated with anti-virus products. Too many people come into the shop and ask for Norton. When I tell them about the alternatives, they just say "I thought Norton was the only one you could buy". Tsk...

Either way, good on Symantec, they've managed to establish a powerful brand name, and actually decrease the effectiveness of it's products, whilst maintaining good sales. Much like Dell's home user range... (He says whilst typing on a Dell PC, with no AGP slot...)

I didn't read what everyone else said, svchost= normal, to an extent. IF you see something like scvhost that is a definate no-no.

Download all the security updates post Sp1 as many as possible, burn to disk, reformat, unplug your LAN and leave it unplugged untill you install all those updates.

This actually sounds like a problem I had which ended in a format. win32.welchia

Actually Patch, I find that norton works great with 98, but thats about it. I've had too many bad experiences with it on the other windows operating systems to claim it works wonders. Especially, XP.

    (Dell ftl!)

I was going to buy one of those ones as well, and after I found out their 399 computer had no agp slot... I realized why they can sell it so low (besides the horrendous abouts of ram they DON'T give you.) :-)
