Well, I've not much time and I only like about 15% of anime, but I must recommend the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series. Straight cyberpunk; cyborgs, the internet is a place, etc. Fairly realistic style as well.

But you've probably already heard of this series. It's on [adult swim] sometimes, so if I were you I wouldn't spend anything on it until you've seen it.

Cowboy Bebop is also good, but like I said I'm just about out of time, so Google it yourself.

It's the original 'big' one, and every anime fan slates it because of clique snobbery, but Akira is still a good starting point to enter the genre.

Trigun is a good series, its done in a western setting on a planet that suffers severe droughts, and the main character Vash the Stampede is a devout pacifist but attracts destruction wherever he goes. The episodes start off very ligtht hearted and fun, but the serious side of the story starts coming out as you get farther to the end, finishing with an awesome final episode. Lots of gun play, and really, really good and fitting music.

Oh I should add that although the anime is in a western setting, there is still a large sci-fi element to the show

I think it's a little late to be calling anime a craze....I think it's more like a....passe phenom really. PRetty soon it should slip back into tried-and-true mere cult status, and all will be right with the world.

That being said, anything made by Gainax (Nadia, Mahoromatic, FLCL, Abenobashi) is a good bet. Although I would say to avoid Evangelion if it is your first foray into anime, as it tends to be a hate-it-or-love-it sort of deal.

Last Exile - Show that takes primarily in the sky, sorta like those old shows that depict 30s-40s sky pirates and whatnot, but it's got a strong sci-fi element as well. Uses some CG during flight, but mostly anime for people/indoor spots.

Ghost in the Shell - Sci-fi (Cyberpunk?) anime. Can't really describe it much more without making a multi-paragraph essay. Nice animation quality.

2nd vote for Bleach; though the show is probably a little less appealing to most people (childish but still fun to watch)... Plot about a 15 year old student turned Death God.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf's Brigade - Gritty futuristic anime about a rebellion against the government. Nice animation quality.

Samurai X - The precursor to Ruroni Kenshin, much more mature... About, well, a samurai... Some good action scenes and high-quality animation.

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie - Cursed with a horrible dub and a disgusting lack of a Japanese audio track, the movie's still got incredible action scenes (though the final fight vs. Bison is a little drawn out). Definentley check it out if you like the Street Fighter series.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Fun, 51 episode series. Most of the plot is revealed in the first three episodes (especially 3), so you can just buy the 1st DVD if you find it interesting. Sci-fi, but the setting is current/old fashioned.

Has anyone recommended a Gundam series yet?

3rd vote for Bleach--if you don't mind subtitles, since its not in English yet.

2nd vote for Hellsing--and the only Anime I perfer with English sound to the Japanese sound w/ subtitles

And Ranma 1/2--Mr Saotome made a deal with Mr Tendo years ago that Saotomes son would be betrothed to one of Tendos daughters. Ranma (the son) and his dad finally show up, except that they have recently been afflicted with a curse that causes them to shapeshift into new forms when splashed with cold water, reverting to normal with hot water. Ranmas new form--is female Ranma. Plus none of Tendos daughters actually want to be engaged.
Martial Arts Action/Comedy with a little romance thrown in for spice. It goes to 156 episodes--if the thought of spending that much money on buying anime doesn't appeal to you, get the books instead, which are just as good and far cheaper.

If you are in future military with transforming robot planes watch

Macross Plus

The music is one of the best to and gives you a good intro to anime music by Yoko Kanno.

Edit: Oh and if the plot sounds familiar to the 2005 movie "Stealth" that is cos that movie ripped from it IMHO. The fact is that Macross Plus's main story of the competition fo design a super-stealth aircraft is based on real US air force story

Damn, now I'm interested in Macross.

The funny thing is, I'd like a lot of these military action series a lot more if they DIDN'T have transforming robot mecha things. You know, if they just had plain old realistic vehicles... Because we all know mecha crap will never exist, and if it does it will be pwn'd easily. There's no such thing as "gundamium" or whatever armor in real life.

bleach is good, and you can get it for free, at least until it gets liscenced.

I just saw Shingetsutan Tsukihime which was really good but not really an action anime. (but it has good music)

Akira's good to watch IMO, so is the original Ghost in The Shell.

Evangelion is good and a fairly short seiries.

I vote Samurai Champloo also.

Ninja scroll is a classic movie, subbed or dubbed version.

A lot of irt depends on whether you'd be up for some kind of future anime or one set in the past.

No.

Cowboy Bebop, TV and Movie - Cyberpunk/Western/Film Noir about bounty hunters. Great music, great cinematography, great action, good characters and plot.
Ghost in the Shell, TV and Movie - It's The Cyberpunk Movie. It's like a William Gibson book or Bladerunner done in anime. Very influential, this is where the Watchowski brothers got many of their ideas for The Matrix.
FLCL - Whimsical, extremely well animated show; it reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes. Great music.
Samurai Champloo - Samurai action. It thankfully leaves out most of the cliches that Inuyasha uses (i.e. girl meets up with rough and tough warrior with a pure heart, plus a few friends, goes on a quest to destroy a great evil, with a few sidequests to acquire more powerful abilities) and the ones that it leaves in, it actually does well.
The Animatrix - Animated shorts based upon The Matrix, done by a half dozen different anime directors. It's hit and miss, but the hits are really really good. You can watch 4 of the shorts on the official website (http://www.intothematrix.com/). Program, Detective Story, Beyond, World Record, and Kid's Story are my favorite.

The Second Renaissance ones are the only good ones, though the Matrix story makes even LESS sense after you watch them. Someone apparently forgot that nukes make great big EMPs.

Over time, two newer director`s cuts of Death were produced, each including new footage not seen in the series - these were called Death (True) and finally Death (True)^2. It begins much in the same fashion, with the final Angel already having been defeated, and the current enemy switching to humanity itself as SEELE unleashes its own plan for the Evas and NERV...and indeed for the entire human race. What role will Shinji play in this ever-tense situation, as NERV gets chewed to pieces by SEELE`s crack commandoes? Will Gendo`s plan swallow up all of humanity? Will Hideaki Anno ever figure out how to end an anime? These questions and more will be answered in what looks to be the final installment of Evangelion. But at what price?

It`s not your average show, the title of "Paranoia" is really what this show is about.

After getting a new `navi` and adding a `psyche` circuit, Lain spends more and more time in the wired. Truly, I must know, Cold Nite...where do you get your anime/freakish knowledge of anime?

Full Metal Alcchemist was fun. Akira was a great movie. Ghost in the Shell was also pretty good.

Has anyone heard anything about BECK(I think the title is all capitals or summat)?

Beck is great. I finished that last month. It's a Guitar/Band anime. Really fun stuff, and I love that guy's voice. Very distinct.

As for where I get that sort of knowledge? A.) Watching the shows. B.) Checking them on Anidb or AnimeNfo. Though I've watched pretty much all my list with a few specific exceptions.

:: EDIT ::

Here's an FLCL description. One of my own.

FLCL
Twelve year old pessimist Nandaba Naota turns around to a rude surprise one day while hanging out with his brother's hand-me-down girlfriend Samejimi Mamimi. A rude surprise that would not only fill his life with new and unforeseen complications, but one that would change the very way he saw and lived that life. Her name was Haruhara Haruko, a vespa riding Alien wielding a guitar and a galactic mission... Find Atomsk.

Scrapped Princess
Pacifica Kasull was born into the realm of every girl's fantasy, a princess of some distant land. But fate was not so kind to her. Prophesized by the Oracle of the God Mauser to be the Poison of the world that would cause the destruction of the planet at the age of 16, her father the King had her sacrificed by being thrown off a cliff. She was saved by pure chance and now, at age 15, enemies assail her at every turn. With only her adopted brother and sister, Shannon and Raquel, to protect her, the minions of the god Mauser loom ominously around them, plotting their death at every turn...

Chrno Crusade
Sister Rosette is much like any good sister of the Church. Her faith is strong and she is incredibly devoted to her work. Her work however... is not so much like your average nun's. Part of the Church's special demon fighting taskforce, Rosette and her demon friend and servant Chrno fight against the minions of darkness. Chrno's old ally, Aion, however, refuses to be part of God's little game of good vs. evil. Longing to surpass the chains that bind him and fate him to lose his battle, he discovers a way to deny God's hold over him, and thus break his own limitations. Only Chrno and Rosette can put stop to his plans now, but will they manage in time?

Noone has said Scrapped Princess or Chrno Crusade yet?!?!

Those are my two favorite anime's. And if you hate shows with crappy **** endings, don't watch Neon Gensis: Evangellion...worst...ending...ever.

And what everyone else said isn't bad animes at all
