concenring latency issues
My question for those of you with cable modems is this: how often do you get lag spikes during gameplay, if any?

For those of you with dsl I have 2 questions.
Is it pppoe( point to point protocol over ethernet)?

If it is pppoe does it lag spike often?

Edit: Could you also include some more average pings and similar things?

No lag spikes for me, but they do a lot of servicing down here so when they have the network disconnected I can't do much. But that's because our area is a trouble spot.

I've got 4mbit/256kbit Comcast cable. My pings can be in the low 30s, although I average somewhere around 40-60, depending on the location of the server. My connection is good enough that my gameplay experience is dependant on the condition of the server, instead of my connection. I do have problems, occaisonally, because Comcast has crappy tech support and service. My previous ISP was excellent, so it's an ISP issue rather than an issue with cable technology. I rarely get lag spikes.

i use comcast, and despite the recent FREQUENT complete loss of DNS sevice, its doing all right. Often my brother and I are playing different intensive games online, and we both have consistant pings of under 50 with decent computers.

Every so often there is a blip, but its not usually a latency spike, just dropping internet for a couple seconds...

    256? Wouldn't you mean 512? I thought comcast's basic was 512.

I just did a bandwidth test and it appears that I've got 384kbits/s upload, which is different from what you say Comcast has and from what I thought I had.

You can trust Comcast to give some of its customers less than others, if that makes it money.

Comcast has one shared line for a neighborhood, I live in a relitively uncrowded neighborhood with few people who would appreciate fast internet. I can hit 550k/sec download rate off decent servers, I have friends 2 miles away with comcast who seldom hit 200k/sec download....

    And its expensive

has nothing to do with that. 512 is the "average" and "maximium" that they offer to their customers, your speed will verify on the quality of your lines, and how many switches you are from the main place.

In my experience (I've had 2 cable ISPs, Comcast and InsightBB), cable ISPs have shared connections for a neighborhood, but it's only uncapped for download speeds. My download speed occaisonally will go over what I'm rated for. My upload speed has NEVER gone over what I'm rated for, for more than a second. This is probably because it's much easier to max out the upload speed for a neighborhood connection than the download speed, so they make sure every house has its upload speed reserved.

Okay well the fastest downstream I've ever gotten was like 920 some KBps so that would make me like an 8mbit connection, which makes sense since they upgraded our area this year, some new testing.

Cable here, 6mbit download, 512kbit upload. It takes my roommate downloading multiple movies from unnamed downloading program before I even notice that he is online. After I adjusted my settings in the console it's rare that I ping over 80 on a natural selection server. Well except for like overseas, I hit around 100 to 120 on most overseas server. Except one German server I get like 180.

I've had a couple different broadband ISPs.

First one was @home with Excite, that was excellent. Uncapped DL/UL.

Then they were bought out my Midco.net. They advertise 6MB/DL, but Ive only hit around 4. (Yes I mean megabytes not megabits)

I also used my cell phone for a short time to connect, but that was under 35K/sec.

Never had any issues with any of them, (other then slow speed with cell phone.)

Sorry to hear you're unhappy with Comcast. I have the same connection speed as you (upload's 384k actually) and find their tech support is ok. Heck, I run a 12 player server off my box AND play from it.
