I am proud to say that this is the most successful browser launch in the ten-year history of Opera. I have received numerous requests over the weekend on whether or not I am going to swim to the USA should we reach one million downloads. <b>Although I blatantly admit that my promise was based more on joy and enthusiasm than my swimming abilities and physical health, <span style='color:orange'>I will do my very best to keep it.</span></b><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sounds like he's already preparing to back out! Regardless, who in their right minds say "If we get 1,000,000 downloads... <i>I'll swim the Atlantic!</i> Especially considering this comment:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->"We are so proud of Jon for doing this," said Anne Stavnes, HR manager, Opera Software. <b>"Considering that the closest thing Jon has ever come to swimming was in the hot springs in Iceland when he was a kid, and those aren't even 3 feet deep."</b><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I get the idea this guy is currently sitting in his office, after spending a few hours at a dock for the photos.

The CEO should have aimed higher for 1 Billion downloads.

1 Million seemed so easy to reach.

It's a PR stunt, of course. And it's not gonna happen.
  • SkulkBaitSkulkBait Join Date: 2003-02-11 Member: 13423Members
It could happen. He'll probably try and have to get rescued some 45 seconds in though.

For some strange reason, I keep hearing Jaws theme and the poster for Open Water keeps popping up in my head.

I imagine that he'll take breaks on an boat. Of course he's not going to tread water the whole way.

I wonder how many people downloaded Opera 50 times or so without actually installing it just to help with getting 1 million downloads.

Whatever, it's a nicer PR stunt than most.
  • SvenpaSvenpa Wait, what? Join Date: 2004-01-03 Member: 25012Members, Constellation
I take it that he will have a rescue boat next to him all the way? He'll prolly do it but he will not succeed. Even if he was at peak physical performence he would soon die/not last by the icey cold water.

If a Trans-Atlantic swim was possible, I'd already be doing it. Honestly.

...but alas. This guy's an idiot. However I do want to see this happen. The Atlantic's a ****, eh?

It's not the critters that'll get ya, least not anywhere's above Georgia, it's the friggin' water. I've been diving during about mid-December and goddamnit, it's cold. Not to mention storms for Christ's sake. That said, I want to see this happen.

Hypothermia is going to bite his ****. No amount of human insulation is going to save him.

Oh yea, if he's not gonna wear a wetsuit, then he's done. Game over, it's nigh on suicide.

<s>You know, when people try to set records swimming great distances they generally don't do it solo. They'd swim inside a cage hanging off the side of a boat that keeps pace with them.</s> (Article says he's being accompanied by a rowboat. Never mind).

Anyway, I think this was more an offhand comment that got blown out of proportion than a PR stunt.

What if they expose him to lots of radioactive waste for a little bit and then he mutates into a fish-man with webbed feet and gills and special organs in his body that hold air so he can maintain a constant depth? Huh? What then?

then he is suddenly more awesome than he currently is.

Hes not gonna die cause even if the only boat following him is a rowboat theres gonna b a whole rack of choppers, probably a fleet of ships, and like hourly arial photos of his progress. PR stunts very seldomly result in death, that would be like the opposite of the result he's shooting for.
