It is a stupid and useless addition that will not change competetive lerking at all.

Bring back 1.04 flight model, pls.
Except add a "swoop" key. Crouch, maybe.

Actually I annoyed puzl about this for a mont hor so before I started mobilizing, and I think it'll be a nice addition for umbra if not for sporing. I noticed a problem with umbra was you would have to do a 180 midair to umbra anything behind you often, as well as the number of times I had to do a quick uturn for whatever reason. I had a couple more suggestions, so we'll see if they go anywhere (banking/swooping was one of them).

Well then I blame you! Seriously though the only thing I'd like to see is being able to glide down slowly when you go straight up. Right now you have to go forward a little bit which makes things a tad rough but it's not that big a deal. If it does get changed I might implement it a bit into the way I play but I doubt it will change the way I play much if at all.

Sounds nice... but here's what we need:

ability to fly straight up, vertical take off
ability to fly dive/swoop straight down
ability to strafe right (with roll towards right)
ability to strafe left (with roll towards left)
    ability to go forwards
ability to go backwards (optional, but would be nice)
ability to hover in one place (more or less)
ability to look up, down, left, right and in even intervals (mouselook/joylook) left & right makes you roll to a certain degree
ability to use the non-opposites in combination (ie: going up, forward, and to the right at same time)

If you have all thouse covered you have nearly all games out there beat for good flight controls. The roll is also an easy yet important asthetic/immersion aspect of the game. The having the Banshee in Halo roll when you make a turn look so much more natural than one than a flat spinning model.

I'd like to see the lerk have the strafing and backwards velocities be at 50% of the forward velocitiy, but all other classes (well except for the Commander) can strafe or reverse at 100% of their forward velocity.

I'd also like to see impact damaged like if you go careening into a wall at 500wcu/sec you should probably be dead. Currently only fall damage is applied.

Wouldn't this be a huge nerf to lerks? Yaw/pitch/roll would drastically reduce lerk mobility. Combined with impact damage, this would make lerking very unfun.

The lerk is not a plane. Never in the natural world will you ever see a bird do a roll when turning. It's not practical in the game either, and would look like ****. Some of the things you list can be done already (you can hover by not pressing forward and simply flapping to stay aloft, you can also dive straight down by simply looking down and flying).

Flying damage would be absolutely the worst possible thing to do to the lerk. Why would you possibly want to do this besides punishing players. It serves no other purpose.

What birds have you been watching?

Sure its silly for NS, but... no, before we go on, tell me how you got the idea that birds don't roll. Or are we talking about complete 360 rolls here?

I meant 360 degree rolls. Anything that flies has yaw(roll) and pitch, I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) he meant barrel rolls of some type. Even if I took it wrong, it still doesn't really benefit the game any to include any type of rolling animation, especially if those resources could be put to another project (HINT nem <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

IIRC, fall damage was removed for lerks when it was discovered that too many Lerks were dying by crashing into walls at high speed--if the wall happened to be slightly tilted away from you, it counted as fall damage, and at Lerk speeds that was often fatal.

Suddenly dieing for no reason as any class is unfun. There is no legitimate reason to make it easier for Lerks to kill themselves by crashing--the marines should be the ones responsible for killing Lerks, not the level geometry.

And as long as I'm here...I will continue to maintain that 2.01 model Lerks were more powerful, even without bite (with the possible exception of fighting HAs). Admittedly, bite is necessary for the Lerk to do efficient damage to buildings--but in 2.01 a good lerk could solo large groups of marines, even with Shotguns, by sniping them all from long range. Now you have the option of coming in close for a faster kill, but against anyone who can aim well, or against heavy weapons, that is often too dangerous to be viable--leaving you back in the sniping role, but with less than half of the ranged firepower you had in 2.01. Not to mention, while the 3.0 flight system is fairly well tuned for landing bites, it is actually much more difficult to use for long range fighting.
