This is easy. Go to your local computer software retailer and you should be able to buy it for about $10 or $15. Do not ever buy a key from someone or steal a key, as it will most likely always be in use.
Here is a picture of the box.
<a href='http://img202.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img202&image=hlbox9iq.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img202.exs.cx/img202/5818/hlbox9iq.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>

To start playing, I might first suggest that you fix your settings to look like this. If you are on anything slower than cable/DSL, you should turn the ping filter off.
-------------------------------------------------
6. NS Without Half-Life (CS:CZ REQUIRED)
-------------------------------------------------
Assuming you are reading this section, You do not own the origional Half-Life. But this does not mean you have to live without Natural-Selection... That is, if you do own Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. This mini-tutorial will show you what to do to trick steam into playing Natural-Selection for you.
1. Broswe to your account directory. (i.e. C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\email@site.com)
2. Find the folder called Condition Zero. Copy it. So, now your account directory has "Condition Zero" and "Copy of Condition Zero."
3. Rename "Copy of Condition Zero" to "half-life" exactly as I have it written.
4. Double click your new half-life folder, and delet the "cstrike" and the "czero" folders.
5. Install NS here, like you would normally (Section 5 covers that.)
6. Open up your Play Games menu. Right-click on Condition Zero, and click "Creae desktop shortcut." Press OK when it notifies you that it made a shortcut to CS:CZ on your desktop.
7. Right-Click the new shortcut on your desktop, and click properties. Now, replace the text in the "Target" text box with this text: <!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 70 -game "ns"<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2--> Make sure that it will target your Steam.exe (it differs for computers.) When you are done, click OK.
From now on, whenever you want to play Natural-Selection, click on the icon on your desktop, and it should work.
--------------------------
7. Some useful tweaks
--------------------------
Tweaks can make the difference between life or death in Natural Selection, and getting the most out of your computer is a must to be on the upper-most hemisphere of the score chart. Some of these tweaks will help you very much on your road owning!
First off... How to open your console.
<a href='http://img64.exs.cx/img64/6508/console7sc.jpg' target='_blank'>(Click here to see what the console looks like.)</a>
Accessing the Console: Whenever Natural Selection, or ANY Half-Life mod is on your screen, press the Tilde key (<span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>~</span>) and it will pop up. Also, accessing the console in overbright maps will dim them a bit.
If you have cable/DSL:
-cl_rate 99999
-rate 99999
-cl_updaterate 50
Misc.:
-fps_max 100 - Allows your PC to always try to refresh your screen at 100 FPS max.
-gl_texturemode gl_linear_mipmap_linear - makes textures look a lot better.
<a href='http://img60.exs.cx/img60/6848/gltexturemode0xd.jpg' target='_blank'>(Click here to see the difference in gl_texturemode settings.)</a>
-net_graph 1 - Net graph and FPS counter. Never leave home without it.
<a href='http://img182.exs.cx/img182/3616/netgraph9kn.jpg' target='_blank'>(Click here to see the net graph.)</a>
-hud_fastswitch 1 - Automatically switches to the next weapon when you press a number/use the mouse wheel instead of having you confirm the switch with another click.
-m_filter 0 - Disables mouse smothing, so you can whip around and not worry about your mouse missing a few pixels. If you have a very sucky optical mouse, you might want to try ro enable it.

*IF YOU ALREADY HAVE HALF-LIFE AS A PLAYABLE GAME IN YOUR PLAY GAMES MENU IN STEAM, SKIP THIS SECTION.
Start up Steam if it is not already running. Remember, it might already be in the System Tray.
Get to the Steam Main menu by Double-Clicking the Steam Icon in the System Tray.
<a href='http://img36.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img36&image=steammenu15ts.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img36.exs.cx/img36/5797/steammenu15ts.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>

5. Installing and Running Natural-Selection
-------------------------------------------------
<a href='http://img30.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img30&image=hlmenu4fh.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img30.exs.cx/img30/3465/hlmenu4fh.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
<a href='http://img30.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img30&image=hlingamemenu0ew.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img30.exs.cx/img30/6056/hlingamemenu0ew.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
Load Half-Life 1 at least once. This can be done by first opening your Play Games menu, and double-clicking Half-Life. Select New Game when Half-Life loads, and select the training course. If it successfully loads, you most likely will be able to run Natural-Selection. Close the game once you are able to move. (Press the Escape [esc] key to get to the in-game menu, click quit)
<a href='http://img215.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img215&image=dlns9mr.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img215.exs.cx/img215/4534/dlns9mr.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/view?action=files' target='_blank'>Download the Natural Selection Client here.</a> Make sure it's the client and not the server. Click a mirror below where it says 3.0 client, and your download should start the same way the Steam client download started. It's 139 megabytes, so download it when you are taking a jog or eating a healthy snack or something.
<a href='http://img195.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img195&image=exitsteam6jk.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img195.exs.cx/img195/4528/exitsteam6jk.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
When you have Natural-Selection downloaded, turn Steam off. (By right-clicking its icon in the system tray and clicking exit)
Double-click the Natural-Selection installer. Follow the on screen instructions. Make sure the installer correctly targets your Steam accounts directory. When it is done installing restart your computer and open steam back up (note it might start up automatically and be in your system tray.) Open Steams main menu and from there open the play games menu. Under third-party games, you should see Natural Selection. Double click it to load up the game.
<a href='http://img207.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img207&image=untitled2vh.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img207.exs.cx/img207/2576/untitled2vh.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
To start playing, I might first suggest that you fix your settings to look like this.

8. Impulses
--------------
Impulses are essentially commands in the console that do actions. Knowing impulses allows you to make some pretty useful binds and scripts, so read on. To learn how to open your console up to bind these, look at section 6.
Bind Impulses to Keys
For example, Type this into the console to bing key P for the Flashlight toggle.
bind p "impluse 100"
If you want to put a message with the binding, use a semicolon, as so.
bind p "impulse 100; say Hey aliens, chomp me first!"

Maybe add "hud_fastswitch 1" to suggested console commands.
Faskalia, you appear to be out of the job!
If you failed my guide you either cant read or you plain suck with computers.
But with the power of visualisation brought by Swift even those poor fellows might have a slight chance of succesfully installing NS <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
*Edit: When the 3.1 patch comes out, oops. ^.^

pfft, if anything, swift moniters this forum more than any of the devs. And he helps out everyone too.
I present swift with an award.

It might of been because I had a little too much pasta that night? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
But still, reading over it again, its a very defenitive tutorial and I like it a lot.
I tried to make room in my sig for a ">> SWIFT'S NS INSTALL GUIDE <<" part, but the forum sig limit is 300chars <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> and BBCode counts.

You can't download it if your CD key is already registered by someone else. You've probably downloaded a dodgy cracked copy or something.
If your CD key is registered to someone else, either you were very unlucky and a store assistant stole your cd key, (if so you must mail the ORIGINAL box to valve, see steam forums) or you've done something stupid or naughty.
Either way, there's not much we can do for you.
And this is not the place (thread) to be asking for help!
and no i didnt jack it from walmart my brother bought the big pack with half life1
counter strick opposing forces and team fortress
When I was making this tutorial, I read a lot about your problem. What happened might be someone snatched it from you and is using it for their own account, or in some rare instances you might be very unlucky enough to buy a game with a cd key that is lagit and viable, but is a dupe (duplicate). In this case, as blue november stated, you will have to go through a pain-in-the-**** process of sending in your cd and box, etc. etc, and never getting it back.. The best thing to do is find someone who doesn't use their key and ask them before taking it or just buying another one from walmart (this time, the cheap $15 one.)
Hope you have it working soon.
