Who Is In The Wrong?

scenario!
hey ho!

so ok, i work at blockbusters in england... and we have been without a proper manager for over 6 months now. i and 3 others are classed as 'assistant manager' by our training..

ok so we got a stand in manager who comes over once a week, or is supposed to, and he does nothing, seriously i watched the CCTV tape.. he did NOTHING.

so he hires these 2 new CSR's (cust sales reps ), over the phone without even meeting either face to face, 4 weeks later we got rid of the first, as he was one **** up kiddy. and just generally **** at the job.

now the next one, comes from a bit of a pikey backgroud, not pikey as in townies.. pikey as in house on wheels.. proper gypo..now i get along fine with him no problems.. however last friday after a number of customer complaints etc, S (the most ranking staff member out of the asst's) was told to get rid of him by this stand in manager. so she told him it was his last shift on sunday, so this guy rings the stand in manager, and then the stand in being the kind of guy you would love to watch burn... he denied it. he is spinelessly scared of the pikeys...

so onto sunday!

S comes in with her husband to rent a movie, and D (the gypo) starts giving it vocally, so the husband enquires if there is a problem? now of course in gypo style he backs down, then goes and calls his family. 5 mins later we got a shop filled with gypos some with blades some with bats etc, and this guy S's husband was getting whaled on... ok thats that bit.. so conseqent to this, S has quit. after 6 years. L has quit after 5 and S2 after 3. leaving like me... and one other guy. and the best part, D who started it all, got suspended, not fired, like he shouldve been, but suspended with FULL pay. leaving me to do 2-3x the work, for same ol pay..

now this is fine, however after working 4 days straight whilst ill, my body was saying 'hell no' and i told the stand in i couldnt open up the next day, he said ' i have nobody to cover so youll have to be in' to which i replied 'if im sick im not coming in. '

so now we are up to the present.. and i am due in at 4 today.. if anybody from head office calls, should i be in the mindframe that i am in the wrong? or that they are for being so flipping dumb? i am still actively looking for another job as we speak but yeah, who is in the wrong? in both cases, the fight... is it stand in's fault for being spineless? or the gypos? and is it my fault for not turning up, or the companies for leaving me with 2 staff members alone...whilst ill?

You need to speak to Head Office before they come looking for you.

You aren't in the wrong, but you have to be very careful about annoying anyone. I would recommend you call your area manager and speak to him today. Then decide whether to go in today or not based on that call.

Bear in mind though that you will get little sympathy if you want time off work ill.

From my lengthy experience in the workforce I'd recommend 2 things:

First off complain to management. Screw the chain of command - go to the top.

Secondly never EVER tell them "if I'm sick I'm not coming in". If you've been pushed to the point of exhaustion say nothing, and simply call in sick the next shift. Cover your **** if you need to - go to the doctor's office and get a written excuse.

Man a whole shop full of them?

If things don't get sorted out there, I suggest you look for another job. You really don't need that kinda hassle.

well unfortunately the cctv has 2 cams, one overlooking the door and one on the shop floor..

the staff can set it etc, so D convieniently put it to the door cam, so we couldnt see what was going on in shop etc...

i know i shouldnt have said anything but blah

update : work just rang, well the other employee, im going in at 4 pm and apparently somebody form another store will be there to help me close.

    so nothing said i guess...

Welcome to the kera-zeeee world of management, where up is down, down is left and left is green!

Take the day off. I hate it when co-workers come in sick. They pass their malady onto everyone else. Seriously, get the hell better before you do anything. Also, look for another job ASAP; if it all goes further into hell, you want a back-up plan.

    Crap. I just realised it's 4 o'clock...well, good luck.

Since all of the other assistant managers quit, they are going to have a difficult time keeping the place operational if they fire you. So, I don't think you have too much to worry about, as far as losing your job. Unless they are complete idiots and can't think that far ahead, that is.

omg guys, you will not believe this..

i have already explained the stand in is a joke.

i went into work expecting abit of a bollocking and what i found to my amazedment was, on sunday, somebody from head office rung, our store for our bundle figures, and when they had left it ringing for 20 mins... they rang the area manager, who rang Lorraine, the only other sane employee who told him what had happened, and that i had rung him the night before, and rung all the other employees and asked, but nobody could cover, so after being told this, and the other numerous things i have reported to him, he flipped.

the stand in, is no longer standing in for my store, and has been Demoted in his own store. he is on a disciplinary charge! because turns out, he asked to sack me.
late saturday night, and so when the truth came out, it made him look like a right flipping mug.

im quite happy, because 'justice' has been done, however, its too little too late, and i still want to leave, gotta write a new C.V tomorrow, then the mail spam commences.

part of the reason i want to be out tbh... i dont like all the drama... i just wanna work..

but this area is a stank pit. ask flintpaper... he knows! he lives near here.

    lol

St helens and earlestown are the two worst towns to be living in up north.

for eg. earlestown/st helens.. two smallish towns, have more drug users... then liverpool & manchester together, thats 1 large cities on either side. and this small area stil has more...

dont get me started on parr (the bit in between earlestown and st helens)
