Enforced conscription is never a good thing.
Forcing some one to be patriotic just dosn't work, It is kinda like forcing some one to like peaches.
Pointless and detramental.
When you attempt to force your views on some one they tend to rebel simply for the sake of rebeling.
I like our current system, I know that they people defending my country WANT to be doing it! They are not just there b/c it is required, and resenting every miniute of it.
Oh, and what did the army teach you? How to take responsibility? Yah, a year living on my own for a year did that. How to get up on time? College did that for me. How to respect athorety? Nope, still don't have that, though I will respect those that have EARNED it. How to be a "Young Man"? I was considered that by most people before I left for college.
So how about instead of forcing kids (yes and 18 year old is a KID) to "serve" his country (or just resent it). Why don't we force em to go to college?
I like that idea better.
If there is ever a draft, no, I am not gona run (not sure why, but I wouldn't). However at the same time I am a conscientious objector and will NOT fight. (probably get my self a job as a medic as that is where I lean).

What if they don't offer what I want? I want to learn to program. Can I do that in the army? Will there be enough spaces left, considering all the other people leaving school?
Forcing someone to "volunteer" for a job isn't any better than just forcing them into it.
<!--QuoteBegin-Snidely+Feb 21 2005, 12:20 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Snidely @ Feb 21 2005, 12:20 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> Forcing someone to "volunteer" for a job isn't any better than just forcing them into it. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> This is comparing enlistment to being drafted, and the former is MUCH better.
But if they don't enlist, they get drafted! What kind of choice is that? "If you don't like the idea of enlisting in the army, we'll <i>still</i> make you join, and you'll get the worst job!" That's not a real choice at all.
Why do you want to take away that freedom from someone? Your experiences in the army were beneficial to you; great. That gives you no right to enforce misery on me in the name of "discipline" and "character building", and you're wrong in assuming you know what's best for me.

Get drafted, and you'll see the front lines in more than likely an undesireable occupation. To me it's a no-brainer.
Once again: why wouldn't you just inform students of the benefits of enlisting, instead of forcing them to join the army? To me, letting people make up their own minds is the better course of action, and there's no current need to have non-volunteers serving.
Oh, and your situation sucked. That's no reason to inflict it on others.

Like you say, I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree. I'll just leave you with one last thought: there are hundreds of opportunities for "rewarding experiences". Restricting someone to the army is unfair, given that there's no urgent need for reluctant recruits. Which experience they want to go in for should be up to the person who knows best; that person.
@Snidely: We can only hope that you (and others sharing your views) never get drafted then ... heaven help us if you do. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I find that the people that join the armed services now a days. are one of either two types
1- people that are attracticed to a milatary career. who are smart people that make great soldiers and do good
2- people that have screwed up in highschool and only way to pay for colledge is threw milatary service. they learn lots of stuff and hopefully turn thier lifes around for the better
I don't really see anything wrong with this system. we get plenty of people in the army. and now a dayas warefare tactics have changes so much that its not about drafting huge numbers of not so good soldiers. now a days we have a relatively small super well trained forces that get the job done. and so I don't think this idea is really all that great.
I recently returned from Iraq after 14 months. I was a part of an AA Brigade mainly situated outside of Mosul. One of the reasons I joined was because I support this war (though with an extreme pessimism), and would rather myself fight it than someone else who has no belief in the cause they've been forced into. In the case of Iraq, it wasn't a case of imminate danger. It was a pre-emptive invasion based on dated intelligence. I fail to see why someone should be forced to join the Army, potentially becoming involved in such a situation. If anything, be proud your Army is strictly volunteer.

On the topic of choosing your MOS vs. getting drafted....well if you only had those two choices, of course you would enlist; that doesn't make it desirable and that certainly doesn't justify it as being mandatory for high school grads.

Dude, you're in the bloody army. Your job description is to use force to protect the country. How you could say that learning to fight wasn't even a significant part of your time there makes me think our country'd be in trouble if we ever went to war on the ground.
Oh wait.... <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Wake up sky! Of course I learned how to kill people and defend myself. What I've told you twice already is I learned MANY more valuable things from my hitch in the armed forces than that. Get the picture?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Let me highlight something that you said:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Funny, I just don't remember this as being significant in the scheme of all that I DID learn.</b><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I was commenting on the fact that you don't consider learning to fight being a "significant" part of your army service. I never said that you didn't get anything else out of it, I just found it incredibly stupid that you would try to downplay your combat training.
On the topic of choosing your MOS vs. getting drafted....well if you only had those two choices, of course you would enlist; that doesn't make it desirable and that certainly doesn't justify it as being mandatory for high school grads.
[edit]You...were in frickin Korea....and you want to FORCE 18 YEAR OLDS INTO THAT!? You are seriously the only war veteran I have ever met that recalls their experiences fondly.
