"pwn": A typo-deliberate version of own, a slang term that means to dominate. This could also be spelled "0\/\/n3d" or "pwn3d," among other variations. Online video game bullies or "griefers" often use this term.

    Other common leet words:

"m4d sk1llz" or "mad skills": Refers to one's own talent. "m4d" itself is often used for emphasis.

"n00b," "noob," "newbie," or "newb": Combinations synonymous with new user. Some leetspeekers view "n00b" as an insult and "newbie" as an affectionate term for new users.

"w00t" or the smiley character \o/: A common interjection, analogous to "woohoo!"

"rox0rs" Used in place of "rocks," typically to describe something impressive.

"joo" and "u": Used instead of "you." This is also commonly written as "j00" or "_|00." <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I can't decide whether someone sat and wrote that with a straight face... or whether it was someone who had to type a line each time he managed to stop laughing.

I hope it's the latter. If not.... I hate the human race.

No, and it can also be quite misleading. Especially with "h4x", and leading on to the stereotypical language a hacker will use. The scary thing is, I read some of the related articles, and in some senses it does add up. I smoked about 30 straights whilst reading some of the various cases where paedophilia has been performed with the aid of the internet through "leetspeak" and how it can be used to baffle parents of victims. It's been one of my little ambitions to do something in civil protection, investigation especially. Looking at the facts, simple things such as games can be used as a negativity more than the community of which makes out. Think about all the times people like NSplayagirl, Athena, Sheena, even Kyliegirl have been hit on through either the forums or on IRC, same things apply with that. If people like that didn't have any sense then it could cause an upset.

I've gotta say, actually, after thinking about it... to us it's funny, but to, say, my Nan and Grandad (who are considering getting a computer with net connection.... god help me who'll have calls every 5 minutes with "what is this" and "what do i do now"...) or just parents who are nubs, it'd probably be fairly helpful.

But I still stand by what I said. I hope the person who wrote that article was laughing as he typed, or I'll lose faith in mankind.

Yeah.. dont you get freaked out when you can read "total leet speak" so quickly and fluently? Then type it back just as fast? I was playing WoW and was yelling at an alliance in leet speak, and my friend asked in party chat "how are you using a leet speak converter in WoW?" (or something along those lines, anyways) I told him I wasnt and he insisted I was lying.

    Man I'm such a loser.
