By CAROL DRAEGER
Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND -- An elderly woman and her live-in caretaker are expected to be charged with resisting arrest today after they allegedly assaulted two county officers Friday.

The officers, who responded to a welfare check at a St. Joseph Street residence, were injured when the 79-year-old woman allegedly struck them with a cane.

Both officers were treated for their injuries at area hospitals. One officer had a separated shoulder and hand injury while the other may have suffered a mild concussion, said Jaimee Thirion, St. Joseph County Police spokeswoman.

The altercation began shortly after officers John Pavlekovich and Lonny Foresman arrived at the home about 5 p.m. Friday, a police report said.

Adult Protective Services had asked county police to conduct a welfare check at the woman's home in the 59000 block of St. Joseph Street.

When officers arrived, the woman's caretaker, a 56-year-old man, allegedly became argumentative and told the officers to leave, according to a report.

Police told the man they were there to check on the welfare of the woman, and they asked him to sit in a chair, the report said.

The man refused, and an altercation ensued while the officers tried to handcuff the man, according to the report.

Foresman deployed a Taser to try to subdue the man, but the Taser dart only penetrated the man's heavy sweat shirt, not his skin, Thirion said.

While the officers struggled with the man, the elderly woman allegedly struck Foresman over the head with her wooden cane.

In his report, Pavlekovich said he heard a cracking sound from the woman's cane and saw her striking Foresman repeatedly in the neck and head.

Pavlekovich said he pushed the woman away from Foresman, who appeared to become disoriented, and the officers successfully handcuffed the man.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor Michael Dvorak said the woman and man are expected to be charged today with felony resisting arrest.

Dvorak said the officers were called to the home on a possible pending domestic abuse charge against the live-in caretaker when they were allegedly attacked.

"This is a serious concern because police are there to protect all of us," Dvorak said.

Thirion, with the St. Joseph County Police Department, said police have been called to the couple's home 19 times since April 2001.

The police calls have ranged from domestic problems, adult protection welfare checks, theft, battery and 911 hang-ups, she said.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Now you mention it, the SAS would have handled that pensioner far more effectively. One in the head and two in the chest, problem solved.

I sense that every time someone says the word 'can' to them, it will be replaced with:

Cane you sign this for me?

We need someone to go on a doughnut run - cane you go?

Well, if we're talking about who'd do it be best, the Combine Metropolice would do it best, no doubt. Bash down the door, smash some skulls, raid the rest of the apartment, and carry off or kill everyone else.

I wish it worked like that in real life.
