<div class="IPBDescription">European Union related.</div> Well, I have to write a report on the European Union, and I could use some help with one part, What does a country need to do to become a member of the EU?

One could say that there has not been a truly 'regular' process until lately, but in case of the recent batch of additions, it started out with the countries in question and the EU opening negotiations on a variety of fields with the aim of homogenizing large parts of the legislature into something compatible with the fellow EU states, accompanied with serious economical discussions (comparing the country's currency's stability with that of the Euro etc.; essentially ascertaining that the new member won't be an economic timebomb). Once these negotiations were at their end, the representatives of the EU's memberstates voted on the additions. If it was unanimous, the addition was passed (as happened in every case that had ended with successful negotiations) and the new member state was allowed to enter the contracts on which the EU is based. To do so, this country had to ratify them, either by an act of the parliament, or of the general populace.

I think the first requirement is to be located in Europe, but don't quote me on that I might be wrong.

I tried to join but they said I wasn't cool enough. Jerks. I went off and joined the UN instead so hah. We're much cooler than that EU.

Not for long....last time I heard Russia was in talks about joining, even although its financial situation doesnt come anywhere near the requirements.

Other things, human rights etc
Democratic elections.

Not sure what else, we dont do much EU in modern studies at least I hope not, stim sitting the exam in little over an hour...

Its got land in Europe, more than most countries :-p but its mostly located in asia and thats not the main point, its the whole really poor country thing.

Noo I like my pounds, but hey im not too bothered, until i find a stach of change somewhere....
