If You Could Find Out More About A Server?

<div class="IPBDescription">What would you want to know?</div> Ok, so let's say your favorite server community dies, for whatever reason. Now you are on the hunt for another server to become a regular on. If you could have a list of all the NS server communities out there, what sort of information would you want to know?

I'm working on getting a sortable list of all server communities (with information submitted by the server owners themselves), and trying to finalize what information to have.

Here is a list of things I _think_ most ppl would want to know:

-Server Size
-Game Modes : Classic Primarily/Combat Primarily/Classic Only/Combat Only/Both Modes Evenly
-Plugins (this would be a list of plugins that the server runs, ie unstuck, 15 extra levels, Lerk Lift, whatever)
-Friendly Fire: Yes or No
-Date Established
-IP
-URL to website
-URL to server rules
-Community Size (forum registration number or number of reserve slots
-Location : North America West, North America East, North America Central, South America, Southeast Asia, UK, Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, Finland (am I missing anyone?)
-Date Updated : date that server information was submitted
-URL to Comments : Any comments that the server op wants to make to players
-Reserve Slot : None, Kicking, Non-kicking
-Number of Admins :
-Primary Language: English, Cantonese, French, etc
-IRC channel
-Email of owner
-Busiest Times (in gmt, I guess)
-Admin Frequency: daily, weekly, monthly, irc only, never
-Type : Newbie Friendly,Competitive Only (i.e. old Hamptons, are there any servers like that anymore?), Fun Server (i.e. gnome plugin, etc), Strict Teamplay, Strict Ruleset (ie one infraction can get you kicked or banned, players are expected to read the rules first), Completely Lax
-URL to Admin List
-Cheating Death: yes or no
-Blockscripts: yes or no
-URL to map rotation
-Map Time Limit
-Custom Maps: yes or no

Are there certain rules that you, as players look for? Like, are you looking for non-swearing servers (or likewise, servers that don't care about that)? Or servers that enforce teamwork?

Let me know, I'd like for this little application to be as useful as possible to all NS players looking for a community.

    frequency that admins are on?

other than that the list you have here looks ready to go gold, but I'm sure one of the other 30,000 people will have a decent idea

Maybe the kind of gameplay/player. If it's a server more for new players and/or teaching, or rather for experienced/competitive players, where new players are encouraged to learn how to play elsewhere before playing on this server. Or maybe if it's more a fun server where you can mess around and do crazy stuff.

So then we could specify a TYPE of server, what TYPES are there?

It really seems like there are tons of types? Or is there only a set number? And in some cases servers can be more than one, for instance, you can have a Newbie Friendly Strict Teamplay server.

Ah,yes the bs 0 or 1 is something I'll have in there, just forgot to add it here.

CD.. I'm not sure if that should be it's own category or not.. I'd think yes, probably.

I think the type of reservation is important. I'm tired of finding servers with 14/15 people then get kicked because of reserved slots...Then the rest of the servers get full/ <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    - Map list
    - Map rotation.
I absolutely love seeing the map rotation of a server... helps a lot when you're just trying to play one map, and you can know pretty much exactly when you want to be on the server for that map.
    - Map time limit (how long until map changes)
    - Custom maps? (please no!!)
  • NiteowlNiteowl Join Date: 2002-09-04 Member: 1274Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Like a list of custom maps? Or whether or not they do custom maps?
  • im_lostim_lost TWG Rule Guru Join Date: 2003-04-26 Member: 15861Members
If there's a map list/rotation, then that should cover the custom map part, I think.

Niteowl, you should probably update the original post with ideas from this thread that you are definitely going to include on the list.

2 NS maps for every CO map with few custom maps (everyone likes a co_ every here and there...)
20 levels plugin. well, as high as possible.
    i wouldn't mind lerk spikes.
    CD-required.
    gorge +hook
    lerk lift
    admins
    extralevels2 (with the /menu command n' all)
    12-14 players. (10 vs 10 ns sucks)
    no reserved spots whatsoever.
ff-on only if admins are on frequently.

thats all i can think of.

You could make a demo of some regs playing, so that people can interactively preview the server before playing.

That way they get to see a bit of "on the ground" action with other players.

What I am concerned about most is powertripping admins that search for people to ban. That seems to be the main beef with competitive players because they do get singled out a lot. I'm not saying that some do not deserve a ban, I'm saying that some get banned unjustly.

Its bad to have admins that actively look for trouble (or provoke it) its good to have admins that stop trouble when its occuring.

Point is, judge people on their actions, not on their stigmas.

A little too involved for this app necrosis. Keep in mind it has to be light on the server, and there are hundreds of server communities.

It'll basically be a DB clientside, then that DB will generate a static HTML page that is searchable and filterable all through Javascript.

    . . .

I suppose FW's post could be brought on topic by the gameplay type, "Strict Ruleset", "Strict Teamplay", or "Complete Lax". If you are itchy to find out if a server is apt to ban, then "Strict Ruleset" would generally be less tolerable.

I don't think it's possible to add a category that states "CAL friendly" or not... Of course that discussion should be in another thread to keep this one from being derailed <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Anyhoo, Nitey, looks good. I think you cover more than enough, just make it sortable by whatever category you want, because all that info is just sensory overload :/

One thing I'd add is language level, i.e. is the swearing allowed considered PG, PG-13, R, X?

That's generally a deciding factor for me. I don't want to hear some kid swearing in my ear all the time when I'm trying to have a good game.

You might not have bandwidth on the DB but it would be something to suggest to server communities which have their own sites. Most good servers do.

Oh well, static information is really easy to host. It's just files for download become kinda heavy and such. I think in that list of information there is Community URL, or somesuch.

Well, it looks like this set of info is complete enough for me to finish the DB. While this thread is going, what is the most expedient way to get info from the server ops? THAT, will be a problem, I suspect. Well, one hurdle at a time.

that demo thing is ridiculous. who in their right mind whould download a demo to see how a server plays? how about just going INTO the server to see it.

Acutally my topic would lie under consistency of enforcement. Where as everyone is held to the same rules, no one is privledged to be able to break the rules, regardless of their status in the community itsself, or the NS community.

The ping for a server mostly depends on where it is, and where you are. It can't be the same for everyone, so that isn't something that can be included in the list.

Yes, well, I do realize that many ppl pick their server based on ping and number of ppl currently playing. Other gamers prefer to join a group of folks who play the game they way they like to (I dunno, with pineapples on their heads, listening to trance, whatever). This list is for the latter.

And besides that point, what 'i'm lost' said.
