This is esuna.

Say hello esuna!

Anyway.

Coming soon, very hopefully, i'm gonna be having a job interview. The position is essentially for a website backend coder, so there won't be any dealing with clients, infact, there will be little interaction other than with the small team of people working there.

Anyway, i need to make myself look presentable.

The first thing to go is the beard, without a doubt, it's scruffy, ridiculous, and generally i only ever grew it for a joke anyway, so i don't much care about that.

The real issue here is the piercings.

In total i have 9 facial piercings, the 3 labrets, two in left nostril, top of left earlobe, both lobes around 10mm (00 guage) and tongue. These things have stood in the way of getting me a job in a number of piercings, but to be honest, i'm really attached to them.

I don't want to hear any replies like "piercings suck, just take them out", it's not that simple. Just because you don't like piercings, it doesn't mean that i don't like them either.

Anyway. The lobes can come out, but they will pretty much have to stay, if i remove them, due to their size, until they heal up they look like dilated anuses. Not a pretty site, as you can imagine. And the one at the top of my left ear will stay, most people are comfortable enough with ear piercings anyway.

But this is where it gets hard to decide. The labrets will last a few hours at best before they start to heal up and become painful to put back in. Putting them back in after so long can also be bad for the health of the piercing, so i'd like to avoid doing that if possible. For the purposes of a job interview, yes they can come out, and i'm tempted to, but when it comes to a full working day (if i get the job), i won't be able to leave them out all day without inflicting quite a bit of pain on myself, which i would prefer to avoid. So with the labrets, it's literally a case of that they'll have to go if i get the job, and i can't make that kind of decision myself.

The nostril piercings, again, will start to close up pretty fast, and to make matters worse, the CBR (or BCR, depends where you're from) is extremely stiff and i don't have the necessary tool to put the balls back in after, so again, they would have to go for good should they come out.

The last one is my tongue, and is of no real issue really. Dunno why i brought it up.

So this is my dillemma. I really like all of my piercings and would prefer to not have to remove any one of them, so the option is there to just leave them all in for the interview and take my chances. But should i remove any of them for this interview? What should i do? Again, if you're just gonna flame me or post crap like "omg UR LOOK dumb TAEK TEHM OOT!!1", please, consider committing suicide before hitting "add reply".

I don't actually have any piercings because I just don't like them. However, if you took them out for just the job interview, I assume if you wore them to work they'd ask about them. So you might as well just wear them to the job interview IMO.

But the thing here is first impressions. I've been turned away in the past because i didn't "fit the company image" or somesuch. If i took them out for the interview and put them back in, if i did get the job, they're most definately going to take issue with it.

Things like this really **** me off. People shouldn't pick you based on your looks, they should really take a look at your abilities before deciding anything. I don't get why people think that if someone looks different, they automatically are not capable of anything?
Well I guess that's the way that life is, and if you take them out it probably won't help. If you're applying for a job with a nice boss, maybe he won't really care as you don't see anyone else except for your team.
You'll have to wear them all the other days when you go to work anyway, so why not when you go to the interview? I mean, if you don't wear them, they'll get the wrong impression. If you do decide to take them out, you should at least tell them that you normally wear peircings, and if they're half normal people I'm sure they'll understand.

Phone up whoever the contact is for the job before the interview, tell them what piercings you've got and ask them what they're policy is regarding them. Then if you really want the job, take out piercings as appropriate.

You are what you are home, good bad or ugly. Go to the interview wearing all of it and hope they're not ultra-conservative. Btw esuna, thanks 1,000,000 times for the gnome pickaxe - he is a smash hitz0r!

You'll have to choose between advancing your career (or even STARTING it in this case) or keeping your piercings. You'd have to be nuts to take longer than two seconds in making that decision.

If you keep your current image, 98% of companies will have made their decision as soon as you step in their building.

The first impression is important, and many of those high position people don't like piercings but there are also many that prefer authentic persons.

I don't know what answer you await from us, there are 2 possible ways to handle this situation and both may be wrong. I don't want to tell you what to do, this is a very personal decision, maybe a compromise: taking a few out. On the other hand, if you already take a few out, there are still some left.

Can't think more, this is verry difficult.
    Good luck :D

Sad but true. No clue where such policies come from, but the policy makers don't tend to live on the intarweb like us NewGen kiddies...

The only place for those kind of looks(read: pierced to all hell) tends to be universities, piercing shops, bartending, and Hot Topic, I'm afraid...

Personally the Laberets(sp?) are hella intimidating... Everything else will just mildly creep out your interviewer.

In my (limited) experience, there are two ways you can handle this:

    1) Wear the piercings, and tell the employer that you don't want to remove them.

    2) Take them off for the interview, but inform the person intervieing you that you do wear piercings and will wear them on the job.

I'd show up with them and ask how they feel about it. If they dislike it I'll tell them I'll remove them.

After much pondering on this issue esuna, I have devised a devious plan! the plan is to simply wear something that will act as a distraction, cleverly averting eyes away from your piercings.

    Example:

    Piercings? What piercings?

I'd bring it up with the employer. You have a wonderfull personality, you wouldn't have a negitive postcount if you didn't

Just tell the employer that you hope your apperiance doesn't play a role in the decision making process. Point out that you have the peircings, but that they don't effect your work ethics and that you can be very professional with them.

Honestly, I'd rather hire a person with facial peircings that has a personallity than some drab, boresome, uninteresting, pathetic waste of a human body. But that's me.

Also, don't drag on about them so that it sounds like an obsession. Just meirly bring up that they're there. If they bring it up, politly say somthing along the lines of "I'm here to talk about my qualifications, not the bits of metal extruding from my face you ****", again, politly

not a piercing guy myself so I don't know the ropes, but don't they have piercing hole retainers for certain types of piercings? like some invisible thing you stick in there so it doesn't close?

I thought you lived in England, I'm sure we don't care that much about these things, not for someone who doesn't have to deal face-to-face with "the client" anyway.

I honestly think it doesn't matter. If you do decide not to take them out, which is what I'd do, just make sure you're not preoccupied about your image in the interview.

Go in there with an air (heir?) of confidence and show them that you are the best person for the job. Show how skilled you are at the job, how you would benefit them and I like to ask what they, the company, can offer me if they had the pleasure of me joining. This is a good way to reverse the power tables while also demonstrating that you're geared towards personal success. Demonstrate you can be a team player etc. so that you'll be a valued asset to the team.

It's all Bovine Slurry but I do it every time and it really works.

[Edit:] Having read the last few comments I do think that you should consider making a good impression with the things you can change. Your clothing and general appearance. If you want a beard, fine. Just trim it neat and business-like. Stick on a suit and tie and if even if you hate wearing one, you can haggle about work clothes later when you've got the job. GL btw.

But just telling the interviewer that you wear piercings, even if you'd be willing to remove them, gives the impression that you're a degenerate.

If you're going to get your foot in the door then you'll have to remove them permanently.

If you decide to keep them, post in this thread twelve months later and let us know how you're getting on.

Yes, people should not base judgment on how people look, but they do and most likely will.

Well my last job had no problems whatsoever, hell, i even had bright red hair when i turned up for the interview. And my job before that was when i got most of my piercings since i would get them in my lunch hour since there was a piercer's across the road, again, there was no issue.

Oh, and thanks for considering me a degenerate, nice to know that there's still shallow ****wits around the boards.

Switch all your piercings with ones that have shiney little diamonds! Thats, like, trendy and cool....

But seriously, can't you go half way and at least switch the labrets with something smaller and less obvious? At least only the time being.
