<div class="IPBDescription">Almost as awesome as caek</div> I don't feel like typing up a long post, so <a href='http://orbitalarm.bungie.org/' target='_blank'>here is a free remake of the original</a> and here are <a href='http://trilogyrelease.bungie.org/' target='_blank'>the second and third games</a>.

If anybody doesn't know what Marathon is and really wants a long description of the games, I'll do it later, but only if you <i>really</i> want me to.

And a word of warning: Do not listen to Dr. Pjofsky, he is not a real doctor.

One click Windows installers (it doesn't get easier than this):

Its cool that Marathon was Mac only and Half Life was PC only so hardly anyone who looks at these forums will get to get any use from this.

It doesn't matter if most of the people here haven't heard of it. The whole point of releasing it for free is to get new players.

Half the people won't even read the story though, they'll play a bit and be like "WTH doom ripoff thx" and close D:

Marathon, I hear, was so much cooler than Doom. I just wish I could have played it then... If I ever pick up a Mac (like an iPac), I'll be sure to play it. I tried some Marathon for PC. Wasn't fond of the controls or the strangely insanely inaccurate assault rifle, but I thought the levels were cool and the engine was sweet.

BTW Pulse, I've said it before and I'll say it again; you like Craig Mullins, eh? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

He definitely is awesome, but I didn't know he made the art in my sig/avatar until you mentioned it and I looked at his site. So many desktop worthy images there...

No this is not juarez or abandonware. The scource for marathon is released and now you can play it on any PC and not just a MAC using the engine created with the OS code. Enjoy the true precursor to HL's ingame storytelling.

    Go, play.

Argh, I hate places like this where you need to download 14 things, install half of them in a certain order, and somehow figure out all the graphical updates that I should download also. For lazy people like me they need a package .exe or .zip that has everything I need for each version, so I cant just install/unzip and run.

And then times it by 2 since there is mac versions also <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I stumbled on that website recently as well, via the Marathon Story website.

Comprox, you only need to download the game engine Aleph One, and then each individual game.

So, for Marathon, you'd need Aleph One and Marathon source.
Marathon 2: Durandal: Aleph One and Marathon 2 source.
Marathon Infinity: Aleph One and Marathon Infinity Source.

To open marathon 1, you need stuffit, which, when installed, caused IE windows to open repeatedly ala spyware (course it used IE and not firefox). And then there is this also:

    # The original Marathon files are not compatible with Aleph One; if you don't have a Mac (or even if you do, but don't want to play the original limited version), you can download Raul Bonilla's M1A1 conversion from Fileball or Bungie.org's Archives. (from the notes on the download page) which is another thing to get, ugh <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Oh w00t, and that download need the Aelphi thing, and SDL libraries, which you must download manually also!

    EDIT - w00t! Got marathon 1 working, whew. That hurt my small brain <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Oh, you're right. I forgot about all the effort to get Marathon 1 to work. Still, it's not <i>that</i> hard.

Happily enough I own an iBook so I just took the stuffit and ran that (although that also works on Windows if you have stuffit expander). It's a fun game and all but crashing whenever I save or go to the next level takes some of the joy out of it.

The STORY is worth it, don't know about the game itself, though :I.

The game seems to be like a text-based adventure with FPS distractions. I suggest just reading the story.

Pssssh, try the game on total carnage, fun stuff. Have you seen some of the vidmaster crap, just wow. Also, the Aleph One port of Marathon isnt the same for me. Can't even grenade jump in it cause the physics system is different. They had to add a teleporter to get to the secret terminal in Never Burn Money. You CAN go down and get the ammo then grenade hop up to the teleporter but ONLY if you know how to grenade jump off walls in a circle. Tis hard.

EDIT: Mind you, I have a Mac in addition to a Windows machine so tis not an issue for ,e <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'd think you of all people Redford would know how to use the <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=86648&hl=marathon' target='_blank'>search</a> button.

Since people in the topic that Redford made seem to have gotten it into their heads that it's hard to install/play Marathon, I'm bumping this with a simple three step guide to playing Marathon on a PC.

    Step one: Download <a href='http://orbitalarm.bungie.org/downloads/M1A1/M1A1-SE%20for%20SDL%20v1.6.zip' target='_blank'>M1A1</a>
    Step two: Unzip M1A1
    Step three: Run Aleph One
    Step four (optional): Download and unzip <a href='http://orbitalarm.bungie.org/downloads/M1A1/M1A1-SE%20MP3%20Tracks%20v1.5.zip' target='_blank'>music</a> and/or <a href='http://orbitalarm.bungie.org/downloads/textures/M1A1%20Texture%20Enhancement%205.2%20(mid-res).zip' target='_blank'>hires textures</a>.

Somebody in the other thread asked if the gameplay was worth it. It is. the gameplay is kind of like a mix of Doom and Half-Life, but better than either of those.

Hey, I'm in someones signature... cool...

Anyhow, I might have to try this game(s) when I get a Mac... which should be within the next few months... hopefully...

Why would you play it on a Mac? If you really wanted the "original experience" with none of the bells and whistles that Aleph One adds, you'd need a very old Mac. OSX isn't backwards compatible.
  • NakedDaveNakedDave Join Date: 2005-01-07 Member: 33294Members
"you'd need a very old mac"

That'd be insulting, if I knew that wasn't true.

/me goes back to my system 8.5 computer

Oh, and I already bought the game, in the "mac action sack" Some quality games in that puppy. and multiplayer Marathon? 5 kinds of fun. "damnit! get away from me with that flamethrower argh!"

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that if you have Unreal Tournament classic, you can play <a href='http://resurrection.bungie.org/' target='_blank'>Marathon:Resurrection</a> which is a slick conversion with a fully functional multiplayer mode and all the singleplayer maps that were in the Marathon demo (that would be 3).

It hasn't been updated in a very long time, but they do plan to eventually convert all of the singleplayer levels and they are moving forward (at a glacial pace). This might be an option if you consider M1A1 too old for your tastes and are willing to wait a few decades for a UT classic mod.

    I played Marathon:Resurection when it was in early stages. There weren't enemies in it then. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That was because this thread was first. I could've sworn I saw a post by Marik_Steele in this thread saying that he would merge all the "Marathon Trilogy is free!" threads, but then it mysteriously disappeared.
