<div class="IPBDescription">i cant understand why</div> i dont understand why anyone in there right mind would make a game of this caliber and not charge money for it. not to say i dont like that its free but there is a major money making oppertunity here. i dont know about most of u but i would gladly pay to play this (a one time fee, not a monthly thing). im sure it cost the deveopers money not to mention time and effort, to make a great game. i mean, is it really reward enough to see that people enjoy your creation? im thinking there is just some vital piece of information that i dont know that would make me understand this. if u think u have the answer plz post a reply :o)

Because they are looking not for riches, but for respect.
    And they have mine.

The NS team has made this because they are in it to make a awesome game. They may want money, but that isn't the force driving them. When money becomes the reason you are doing something, your heart won't be in it, and the overall quality will decrease.

It's because they want jobs, and they think this is an excellent way to get hired on by Valve or another software company. :)

It's a way to get noticed.. to get your name out in the world.

What is better to say? I have a degree for X university in coding? OR Yes, I coded and helped develop a mod that was downloaded by thousands.

We could help the NS team by buying some of their merchandise. If everyone on these forums were too buy a t-shirt the NS team would be happy. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

They don't need money then they have thousands of gamers eagerly dedicating whole systems to their game.

Believe me - This is a portfolio within itself.

Without Valve's permission they could be blown out of existance by Sierra's third reich of lawyers.

The amount of expirance you would gain coding something like this would give you quite a number of different job oportunities in the very near future.

Anyone who could ignore the money making potentials of this game is a fool.

I'm sure Flayra (and Cory, Def, Mojo and the mappers, and who ever else I always forget.) will have no trouble finding work in the future.

If you'd like to contribute some money, visit the <a href='http://www.cafeshops.com/thensstore' target='_blank'>NS Store</a> and buy a thing or two.

You'll be giving money back to the Dev's, while getting something spiffy in return.

They have my respect as well! GJ GG! w00t!

and I hate to draw a comparison once again to counter-strike but the coders of CS are now working for valve getting paid for there next release <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Plus my dads and programmer so I think I know a thing or two about programmers <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> They don?t program for money or glory. Just remember that when Valve grab's this mad for marketing like they did Counter-Strike and Day Of Defeat, we can all say that WE! were the people that played the FIRST release!

That's a nice feeling. I have a couple friends who were with cs pretty well from the beginning. The stories they tell... of cs back in the day...

    Now its my turn! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

This game is going to look GREAT on their resumes. Even the mappers. Those maps are rock solid smooth, fast, HUGE, and detailed. Amazing work by EVERYONE that worked on this mod.

Gun Running never should have been taken out, just change the map more frequently! I don't play CS anymore knowing how easy it is to cheat.

Umm, yes. If they sell the game without permission of Valve, it is a direct license infringement, and any copy they sell, they can doubly be sued for, so, it would not be wise to even consider this without the agreement of Valve, and in those agreements, Valve would get ownership of NS, so it wouldn't matter anyway.

You just aren't allowed to make money as a direct link of your product on any engine not licensed to you, in this case, the Half-Life engine. So, even if they wanted to, they couldn't make money, unless Valve suddenly thought that letting someone have money rather than them was a good business move.

I'd wager they could go to court against a mod for DMCA infringement if they wanted to. (if it were a mod to a game engine that didn't have a public SDK perhaps more so)

NS won't go retail without Valve assistance, nor try to. Therefore Sierra's "third reich" of lawyers won't have anything to do with the process.

There is more than life than money to some people! The fact that it is free and the high quality this is, just gives me more respect for the NS team.

Besides, just remember what happened to counter-strike when it went retail. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

don't worry, valve will most definitely be in on it if it becomes a retail product..

The developers of NS have my respect.. and a portion of my wallet too if they really want it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yes, cafe press (the website that the NS store is set up with) also excepts checks and money orders. And also some pay pal thing you can sign up for. All the details are here.

By the way, everyone who believes Flayra did this to get the attention and then probably a job from a major developer ... just as Squeal where they met.

One big thing is that Game Producers hire people and force them to make games. That means they had the guy a design document, and he follows it. Kinda like building a house for someone.

In the realm of retail modification, developers can explore their creativity and do what they want to do. They're not bound by any boxes of pink slips.
