He left the company over a year and a half ago, and devoted himself full time to working on NS. He's made a lot of sacrifices for NS, not the least of which is paying for the development of it completely out of his own pocket, as well as living off just tofu and water for the past year.
I still work at SSSI and create art for NS in my, very limited, free time.

You just aren't allowed to make money as a direct link of your product on any engine not licensed to you, in this case, the Half-Life engine.
