<div class="IPBDescription">You can't beat free...</div> There is a free 120-day beta of the new Microsoft Anti-Spyware software available, code named 'Atlanta'.
<a href='http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx' target='_blank'>http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspx</a>
I've been using this for a month or so internally, and have found so far that minor bugs withstanding, it's pretty sweet. Besides scanning and removing like Adaware or Spybot S&D, it also runs as an interceptor service that can protect your system from future infection before it occurs. I've seen no issues on XP, and have seen minor irritations on 2003 only (which most folks don't use as a desktop OS, like I do).
Let me know what you think!

Back on topic, i treid this out just a few hours ago and it is really nice.. it found some stuff that adaware didn't.. i'm so happpeh!
I may try it eventually, I don't know if I trust the evil M though.
Ang OMGWTHBBQ it's Monse!!!111oneoneone
There's talk off and on of it becoming part of something like Longhorn. Ditto for the MS anti-virus software that's tentatively under development (after acquiring an AV company called GeCAD - from Roumania! ).
I heard it was a real strong performer though, nearly equalling AdAware and Spybot.

That's definitely a tricky situation. Some people would say that it's not ethical to charge for spyware or virus removal tools when sometimes a bug in MS is what let them in. On the other hand, no one has a problem when a part on their car breaks and GM charges them $2000 for a replacement, so I guess it can be looked at from both sides. Differing expectations.

True, but are there other companies that will give you a new transmission for free? (seriously, I need one)
Why pay for somthing when you can get somthing that's tryed and tested for free?
An excellent point - but in the case of Adware (Lavasoft) for example, they only give you a removal tool for free. If you want an interceptor you need to shell out cash (Adwatch). Spybot does not offer an interceptor at all. So, it's not entirely apples to apples. Lots of people make free versions of their software, then make a better version for a fee. Maybe MS will too; hard to say.

Well, I do work here after all.
Must... do... Bill's... bidding...

Well it's a bit different. There are parts that are going to break, and there are parts that shouldn't. If Microsoft was a car maker and they had an engine explode because of a buggy part, they shouldn't charge you $2000 for a replacement.
You, sir, have never owned a GM product! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If you are not under a warranty and your engine fails, a car maker don't care if it's a problem within their faulty design or shoddy workmanship - you're buying a new engine. Your only hope is to die and have your family sue them for negligence. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
And as a side note, MS does not charge you for buggy parts. If a virus comes from a bug, they release a free patch. If you call here for support and it is due to a bug, there is no charge either. See if you get that sort of service from Ford. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I have to admit - it's based on code written by GIANT Software. Who we bought out... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Microsoft buying "GIANT Software Company"...
I have to ask, what's the memory usage like with it, especially with the (what i can only assume is real-time) inteceptor? My computer's getting a bit sluggish these days so every bit of performance i can scrounge up, the better.
EDIT: Ooh, it's mentioning something called SpyNet... a little too close to SkyNet for my liking... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I took my laptop home (From uni) for xmas and my house mate who is the only person to use my laptop filled it with crap and spyware because he has no idea what he has doing. So far it has still kept it spyware free, so im happy.
I'm also pleased that they have included explorers like spybots, if it didn't have them then i probably wouldn't use it. I use them quite alot. I also like that you can set it to ignore some software on your pc that you want to keep.
The only thing i have found bad so far is the pop up boxes appearing which don't have a yes or no button and you have to wait for them to go. They need a x in the corner to make them **** off faster.
On another note my view of microsoft seems to be going up, worryingly. For quite a few reasons really, this anti spyware software, SP2 now the bugs are sorted, but especially the MSDN. XP Pro, Visio and VB.net 2003 ALL FREE. Wooo! Go students!
Esuna:
And with the UI open thats another 11mb
Also - in my experience, it's generally not just MS bugs that allow spyware to get installed. More often than not, some window pops up and says DO YOU WANT HELP WITH YOUR SEARCHES CLICK HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the user <i>clicks here.</i> What ms really needs to do is release a hardware attach that kicks people in the nuts (or slaps their boobs, as appropriate) when they make poor computing choices.
as for the new program I will definetly have to give it a try, if monse has used it for a couple months and says it's worth it, then I'm sold on it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I wonder how long it will take to nab with 56.k, and how well it will work with ME >_<

I agree. You can set the Alerts option (under Options | Settings) to not show those, but that's a lame workaround. I want an X!!!
MS knows the inner workings of the operative system better than any other companies that develop anti-spyware, we need stricter trade laws to protect the consumer.
See, that's the thing that bugged me. After reading in <a href='http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm' target='_blank'>this guide</a> that GIANT AntiSpyware was the best performer of the group, I went to download the program. That's when I saw the buyout by Microsoft. Worried, I looked for the final copy presented by GIANT. After I downloaded it, I checked to see the versions supported by the program: I was pleased to see Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP in the list (and I believe it even supported 95).
After using and being pleased with the results, I decided to load AntiSpyware to my laptop, which is only able to run Windows 98 (it's too old to go any better). I couldn't recall the steps I took to find the GIANT version, so I decided to settle for the Windows version instead: I figured it couldn't hurt to try it out on a less-needed computer. Unfortunately, to my dismay, I see that upon Windows buyout, true to form, Microsoft stops support of earlier versions of Windows to force an unwanted and unneeded upgrade! Suddenly, even though the program supported earlier versions at one time, Microsoft no longer sees the need to follow suit! Sadly, this isn't too surprising with Microsoft...
I would suggest Debian, but while it's fun, I like to get some work done on a daily basis. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
