Nite, if you could check out those cafes, they would be a much better choice. I kinda cringed when I saw the $6/h rate of the UBC, and UBC is pretty far for some of us. Downtown is much more central and there are skytrain stations and buses covering pretty much every road.
i wouldn't mind going downtown, but just so no one's confused its 6$ per TWO hours and 5$ per TWO hours. so its actually $3 and then $2.5 per hour. there are definately cheaper cafes so if someone will investigate the downtown ones it would help us alot
Thank you very much Kill4thrills for answering the 'where' question!
Without that answer this thread was a sinking ship.
Question: Are the PC's at this UBC internet cafe powerful enough to run Half-Life2?
HL2DM and cs:s would be fun, and if the pc's are that powerful, then as far as playing other games, we wouldn't have to worry too much about hardware restrictions for other software.
Question2: Can we load other software? I presume this is yes, since we can play ns, but other titles would be nice, some I have already mentioned, but i'm also thinking some avp2 would be fun, as well as some Giants: Citizen Kabuto!!!
Other then what games to play, the when question must be answered next, though this is a much eaiser question.
You just take the the skytrain to Broadway Station, then get off and wait for the express bus that goes to UBC.
It just takes a while to get there....
Edit: I just gave this lanshop a call and answered my own questions.
Yes, they have the hardware to run HL2, and in fact, they have HL2 loaded on the machines!
The downside? Can't install any software, the employee stated that due to security issues, and the unlikely-hood that someone will walk in with 30 licenses for AVP2, they cannot load any software on their machines, however, they have a massive games list, so much that the employee could not name them off the top of his head!
Note: They do have natural selection of course.
I'm told that on March 22nd and April 4th they have a special where $10 allows you to play all the arcade machines and computers for the whole night! The problem is the 'whole night' consists of 9pm-12am...not very long. Apparently when they have this in the summer, it starts at 7pm and ends at 1am, but because of school being 'in session,' they are not allowed to run these nights as long as in the summer.
Sounds like a great place to lan to me, though I doubt we would want to wait for the summer.
I'm in Oregon, but may be willing to make the trip. Is this going to allow BYOC? I've got a laptop so it's not as much of a hassle as a full fledged rig.
Just so you know, you won't need to BYOC. As for if it will be allowed, we'll have to check with the shop owners. My guess would be no though.
The spring break date is starting to look doubtful. I think we should keep planning this and just do it whenever possible.
That said, we still need someone to check the downtown locations, any volunteers? We're looking for 20-30 comps, good enough to play hl2, and able to install our own software, or have a large enough selection that we won't need to.

not quite enough to start party yet. i think we need at least 12 to have some good 6v6 action. 14-16 is ideal the people that i might be able to bring are total nubs at ns and i don't think i want to drag them along... they won't have much fun dying constantly and we won't like being on their team...
i have 2 friends i am going to bring along, one is good at ns (he'll come if i can get him off World of Warcraft) and the other is a noob (he is a cs player)
I should be down for wherever. Whenever, is a different matter. There is no real good time in the future that I can block off. I might be able to bring out another friend, who is of average skill level.
Other than that, I'm really only down for playing NS. I'm not much of a gamer outside of NS.
Yeah I've bussed it to UBC before. It will work out.
I'm done midterms by Saturday March 19. Finals are done by the 23rd of April. These are SFU times... I dunno about UVic etc. The 3 weekends directly after midterms should be ok for me to show. That's March 19-20, March 26-27, April 2-3.
If there are high school people here, when is your spring break?
Im in high school. Spring Break for me is March 19th to April 3rd. I don't know if other high school districts have 2 weeks like North Vancouver schools.
Alright people, how does saturday, march 26th sound like for a good, lan fragfest?
Oh yeah, I called that UBC lanshop, and someone has to call back during the day and speak to the manager about BYOC. If you do, you should ask about bringing other software as well.
i'm ok with any date. if we can't rustle up 14 players i'll have to see if i can bring my nubs along. afaik they have very little fps experience, very little rts experience, and no ns experience at all
sure. Looks like we have answered the when question too, but I might have another valid choice for the whole 'where' question.
Looks like someone has fallen accross this topic in a search engine, and this certain someone happens to own an internet cafe! He has conacted both I, and apparently ReK as well. I have asked for his phone number.
Yes, he approached me too, hence the "Other location possible" in the topic in gen discuss. He's mailed me back saying that we should get in touch over MSN. More info soon.
I'm assuming we are talking about NS 3.0 on steam? But I thought steam won't work for LAN, cause we can't all share 1 account. We have to bring our own account I presume?
Another question, would we be able to have alien and marine separate, so we won't overhear each other's strategies and plans? Commanding would be so fun cuase then I could just yell out orders.
Apparently transportation is quite simple, you just get off at the edmonds skytrain station and take the 112 bus all the way there, or drive of course.
Yes, we will have HL1 mods awaiting us (including the latest version of ns of course!), Plus many, many other current games including some LOTR games and the mighty battlefield series!!!
No, we can not install software for the same reasons as the UBC net cafe.
But we'll have lots of games to keep us busy!
No you cannot BYOC, the place is already packed with machines. We have 27 available to use and one server!
The rates? We can play from noon saturday till midnight for only $15!!!!
I do, however, need to know who is going and how many by march 19. The owner intially wanted me to pool money together and pay before hand, which is definitly not doable, so we have come to a new rule. If you do not show up within 30min of the time we reserve (Ideally noon till midnight), you will lose your reservation, and likely your seat!!!
Again, we are looking to do this on March 26th.
So what do you guys think? I'm all for it! what time do we want to do this? Is noon till midnight ok for everyone!!!
The owner would also like to stress that there is restaurants aplenty near his lan shop.
Note: If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me, and I will find out for you.

Any dates in mind yet? This would probably be best after midterms...
