<div class="IPBDescription">get all that OT out of threads</div> I'm sure by now most of you have witnessed a large amount of threads on the topic of scripts/scripting simply degenerate into sessions of flamebait-and-wait.
I think I may have the answer.
Create a dedicated Scripting Forum, possibly a sub-forum in "NS Customization" seeing as it is, strictly speaking, customizing NS.
However - the benefits that I see from doing this are:
- Scripting discussion moved out of irrelevant forums such as General.
- Reduced flame-wars (because anti-scripters are unlikely to read the Scripting forum often, and if they do they're probably looking to start flaming - hence it will be easier to moderate)
- More productive scripting discussions
- More Players Educated about scripts (with any luck) seeing as they would then have a place to discuss them.
- Better player awareness of scripting
The only possible disadvantages that I can think of at the moment would be:
- Mass flame-age (however it should be easier to moderate as mentioned above)
- Anti-scripters arguing in there against scripts and thereby starting the monthly flamebait thread you usually see in the General forum (not to say that anti-scripters start it - just that pro and anti-scripters in the same place usually means flameage).
In either case if it gets that bad you (the forum mods) could close the forum and potentially have lost nothing from it, except one avenue of exploration on the road to removing scripting discussions from irrelevant forums.

hmmm, shouldn't this be in i & s?
It will also give the scripting community a place to congregate to discuss scripting in all (legal) forms, without the current large risk of starting a flame-war if their post even contains the word "script".

I'm all for diversifying the forums, and I agree that it will remove the flames from Gen Discus. Moderation and implementation are still iffy though.
as he is the one who has final say in this matter. If a large number of people agree, then it shouldn't be that big of an issue.
I know the very basics of scripting, and a script forum would be most definetly help me improve my knowledge.
But if you take the time to think about it:
Most avid anti-scripters are gonna look at the forum name and would never even think about reading any of the threads in there. I mean if you're against scripting then why would you look through the scripting forum?
Implementation is a bit iffy at the moment - however I'm sure that there are a fair few people who frequent these forums who would be more than willling the help moderate it - however people the mod team are willing to give privilidges is probably far fewer.
But then again I'm just making the suggestion, it isn't our place to suggest who we would like to see moderating the forum - thats up to the mod team. If they would be looking for more people to moderate this (potential) forum, then I'd be more than willing to help out. However, again, I don't think it's really our place to discuss who we would like to see moderate it, that's ultimately up to the mod team.

Yes, because he'll <b>love</b> you for that, honestly TAK. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
- Shockwave
I'm sure the mods would be a <b>tad</b> sight more appreciative if you did that instead of PM spamming them.

I can see the news page now.
<i>"350 members of NS community banned for spamming a forum admin with requests!"</i>

I also think it's a good idea, imagine a place where you can honestly talk about the benefits of one script vs. another slightly different script???
But I am very concerned about the amount of flaming that would ensue.. The mods are all very busy as is.. And who would want to moderate that forum... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

^^ ftw
Yeah... I think that's the problem... As you mentioned with all the other threads about scripting going to hell, one could assume that the forum would too. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I would. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'm also fairly sure other people would feel the same way. I think a scripting forum would be a good way for people to become informed about scripting and what it can and cannot do.
I tend to not screw around and simply delete the crap as evidenced by I&S(which is not generally a mods job, but I do it anyway <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
----
However, if done right it would give the clanners/pro scripters a great place to share their knowledge and help guide new players in a direction.
Others not interested in scripts don't have to visit there and if they did and tried to start crap, they would simply be put down the standard moderation path.
Really what I'd like so see (forgive me large scale vision <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) is threads talking about specific scripts and how they work.. (pinned)
Have one topic (only one) for the discussion of scripts yeah/nay...
And have any topics that match an already discussed script combined/removed.
Perhaps also a tutorial so people can learn scripting...
Just my random thoughts..
: )
