IIRC the RIAA prosecuted (and won) based on IP evidence, so Valve could probably get away with it too, except he was one of the stupid ones and didn't actually succeed, but got caught trying 19 times.

Those forums would be impossible to manage, which is why they are the way that they are. NS has maybe 4,000 unique registered users every day at this point (mods, please insert correct number if I'm way off base) that frequent the forums at least once.
The Steam forums have at least 20,000 <i>actively posting</i> members. Imagine even attempting to have the strict rules of NS in such a forum. It'd be stupid and a waste of time/energy, unless they have at least 2-3 admins and 8 mods active at all times. Best to intervene when it really warrants it and try to stay out of the general forum stupidity that seems to be the running norm.
I have a lot of respect for Zunni after reading that thread though. All they did was disable his steam account, which is perfectly within their rights. IIRC the RIAA prosecuted (and won) based on IP evidence, so Valve could probably get away with it too, except he was one of the stupid ones and didn't actually succeed, but got caught trying 19 times.

The music was beautiful.
The Steam forums have at least 20,000 <i>actively posting</i> members. Imagine even attempting to have the strict rules of NS in such a forum. It'd be stupid and a waste of time/energy, unless they have at least 2-3 admins and 8 mods active at all times. Best to intervene when it really warrants it and try to stay out of the general forum stupidity that seems to be the running norm.
I have a lot of respect for Zunni after reading that thread though.
