For Those "shocked" By Leaks / Piracy

I guess a kinda PSA
First off, this isn't an attack or flame at any specific person, but more about the ignorance or naivity that a number of people display, especially the media, to be honest. Also, a note to admins, please don't lock this. I don't want to discuss means of piracy, i don't want to discuss who uses illegal means to acquire games, i just want to spread a little information to people.

In the past week or two there's been media coverage of "leaks" and "piracy" regarding two pretty big games, this we know of. This has, i must admit, a detrimental effect. Not only are people going around illegally acquiring games, they're getting free publicity. No more do people need to check their favourite torrent sites or search their favourite P2P network, the mass media is informing everyone anyway. They might as well name the release group and point you at a download, to be honest.

Piracy and leaking has been around for many years now and i have no doubt that it will continue for many more years to come. No, i don't think this is a pessimistic outlook, this is a realistic outlook. I'm neither endorsing nor condoning piracy, i'm attempting to stay entirely neutral on the issue, incase anyone wonders. This point isn't up for debate. There is no argument for piracy, so don't even attempt.

Anyways, back to the matter in hand. I'm writing this because i'm sick of explaining it as a number of people seem entirely oblivious to the situation.

Every single major game gets leaked. If there's any description of fanbase or popularity to the game, it will be leaked. And even if there's no fanbase or popularity, it will see an illegal release around it's release date, give or take a week or so.

Games are virtually never (I've not heard of such a case, but i won't say definately) leaked from the developers themselves. This would be idiotic, they spent years working on a game that will, let's face it, earn them money, there's no reason for them to give away what they spend many, many hours on, throwing away any money that they would earn. Not a single member of the company would do this as it would be essentially throwing their job down the drain, whether they're caught or not.

So this leads me onto where the leaks or illegal releases do come from. There's a good number of places where the leak or illegal release could come from. They could come from computer shows, gaming magazines, gaming websites, the factories that press the CDs, from the retail stores themselves. This is what makes piracy such a hard thing to track. As the chain goes on there becomes more and more people involved, right down to the minimum wage 16 year old working in a game store that decided to upload a game he stole pre-release from the storeroom at the store he works in.

Claims such as "so and so developer should have better security" are ridiculous. I don't know for certain, but i can at least assume that any game developer, especially the big name ones (Such as Bungie or Rockstar, for example) would have dolphin butt style security (water tight). But when the game leaves their offices any number of things can happen, hell, you could rob the delivery guy and bag yourself a game if you were really so determined. I'm sure the game developers themselves are trying their upmost to keep their games secure, and as far as their part goes, they do.

In short, leaks come from a massive amount of resources, don't be so sure to point the finger at the developers themselves, they, more than anyone, want to keep their games from being leaked, and please, the next time you think about making a thread about "OMG X GAME GOT LEAKED, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!", don't.

Agreed, it's nothing you haven't already said
in responses to my previous two topics
    covering the afore-mentioned leaks.
I created those two topics, simply because they're
news. Well to me they were. They would have been
posted sooner or later by someone else anyway.

It's not like they did any harm and if you don't want
to read them, well, no-one's forcing you to open the
topic and read it are they?

Sorry it that comes across as extremely negative
but I very rarely create topics unless it's something
fairly new and hasn't been covered before.

If there's any problems, you know where the "PM" button is.
I'd much rather discuss problems that way than by using "Reply".

That's fair enough, I was simply covering all my bases.
Which had to be done when you used sentences like:

I completely understand the reasons behind your post
it just comes across as something that maybe didn't need
it's own topic and could be done easily in replies to others.

But again, there's some handy information there and alot

Not really. I've been trying to get this point across: it's not that I'm tired of people talking about leaked games, I'm just tired of people acting like the only games that are leaked are super high profile ones and that its such an uncommon occurance that we all have to go "OMG!"

This is why Valve are being clever and forcing everyone to authenticate through steam. As i mentioned in the HL2 CE topic even boxed retail copies will require internet access to do this. So all Valve have to do is keep the HL2 authentication part of Steam off until the legitmate copies are sold. Im sure it will give software pirates a headache too, which is always a bonus

There's not a snowflake's chance in hell that HL2 will avoid an illegal release. Don't forget that CS:S requires online authentication.

Crackers and the like are, believe it or not, very intelligent and very resourceful, each time a new form of protection arises, they crack it without fail. These people aren't amateurs, they know what they are doing, and, however nice it would be to see an end to piracy, they're not going to be stopped any time soon.

There really is no way to prevent piracy in its end, however, we can inform them that what they do puts game developers out of business. You want to keep playing the game, then dont steal it. If you do, you are costing the developers more money so they cant continue to produce these titles. Part of the reasons Trough The Looking Glass went out of business was BECAUSE of piracy. They made some awesome games too, like Thief and System Shock series.

Dont put Valve out of business because you cant wait to get a game early.

You mean they will find away to unlock the files before release, or find away to trick steam into authenticating them when it is released? (which is what happened with CS:S, correct?

Does it happen to MMORPGS too? Are there people currenty playing Everquest (and the like) who never payed a subscription?
