Bah, I don't know how you people can not be thinking. I've always got at least 2 or 3 things going on in my mind at once. Except when I'm about to fall asleep, then it kind of slows down right before I sleep.

Crazy people and your 'not thinking' . i had a thread similar to this about 5 months ago, and none of the advice helped. The one thing that helped me that i got from other people is to work out or something. Now that im working i fall to sleep real quick. It used to take me AT LEAST AN HOUR, if not 3 to fall asleep. now just about 20-40 minutes. 10 if im watching a movie. It is kinda funny but i fall asleep better when i am watching TV than i do when i am laying in bed, the reason being is i am thinking about going to sleep.

more help, a quick beer before bed helps me fall to sleep too. (i dont know if this is aloud on the forums but i started doing it recently and it does help on those days i dont work)

Get in the shower. Turn it on. Get wet. Lie down so that the warm water is hitting your legs, and not getting in your face. Close eyes.

I'm with the Dr on this one.

But seriously, you're examining the wrong part of the problem.

You shouldn't be thinking about what to do to get to sleep, but what is keeping you awake.

I used to be completely unable to go to sleep before about 2am. Now, I can get to sleep within about 20 mins of going to bed.

Fear of wasting time sleeping, or missing out on interesting things happening. That used to be my problem, as far as I can tell. Now I just go to bed early and get up early.

I usually think of things I want changed in videogames. For example, in ET I wished the Medic didn't come equipped with an SMG until Heavy Weapons Lvl 4. Lately, it's more about zombie-killing, in part because Halloween is approaching, in part because I love killing zombies, in part because of Zombie Panic.

I had very bad sleeping rhythms myself for a long time. I'm on the way to recovery. First, you need to get up early. Getting up earlier means that you'll get tired earlier too. At first you'll be rather tired all day long, but as you continue to get up early, you'll start going to bed earlier too. If you have trouble sleeping so early at first, read a book in bed for an hour or so before going to sleep. Does wonders, frankly.
Deprive yourself of sleep (not completely, just make sure you get up early no matter how late you went to bed), and soon you'll be able to (probably even want to) go to sleep early, too. And stop drinking anything with caffeine a few hours before you're planning to sleep.

As for getting up, the best way is to have somebody wake you. If you're ruthless enough to yourself (and think you can control your temper when woken up this way), tell them to steal your blanket and run off with it, not just dump it on the floor. That should get you out of bed. And once you're out of bed, getting the blanket back and going back to bed is forbidden. You'll just have to have that much self-discipline.
Otherwise, the only solution is a good, loud alarm clock. If your stereo has an alarm feature, set it to really loud (but not so early that the neighbours will complain). If not, try one of those old mechanical wind-up ones. But beware, they only ring for a short time, so make sure to get out of bed while you're awake (this is harder than it sounds).
I myself, sadly, quickly develop an immunity to alarm clocks to the point where they can't wake me up at all if I haven't slept long enough.

I was nocturnal for a long time, In fact I was pretty much the same as you. Every remedy suggested was just daft, you can't just stop thinking. Listening to music means you get into the music, reading books means you stop when the book has finished... then pick up another one. Exercise just makes you sweaty!

I now go to be about 3am'ish, wake up about 7am and start work, finish work at 5:30 and then go out or invite friends round, head back to mine and play on the computer/read till my eyelids are literally dropping and then collapse in bed and fall asleep straight away (well, maybe another few chapters of a book).

Just keep busy and you'll sleep every night.

Exhaustion FTW!

Comfortable bedding.

Try total silence. If your thoughts are too active mine always are, try putting them to work. Keep your eyes closed and yourself comfortable and try writing a novel in your head, or simply daydream. Daydreaming usually is pretty pleasant and is usually a good way to keep you from thinking 'I CANT SLEEP I CANT SLEEP' ad infinitum.

Amen to that, I hated going to sleep for fear that I was missing something or that I could be doing something constructive.

Setting up a set sleep schedule really helped as I was less prone to sleep in. (and actually miss something)

Esuna there is a way to use meditation to lower your heartbeat, which inturn lowers your blood pressure, which inturn makes you fall asleep. One of my teachers was telling me how he learned it and loves it becuase he can fall asleep on command within 10-15 minutes

I find the best way to readjust your sleeping pattern is to stay up all night so you're uber tired the next day, then go to sleep at the proper hour the next day...

I get a "what did I eat for breakfast?" type thoughts if I'm watching a food show (and just randomly sometimes). I suppose it keeps your memory fairly sharp. As long as it's minimally interesting - because if you have no interest, you'll never bother remembering it. That's a bit off-topic though.

You've got to find your personal way of getting to sleep (preferablly without drugs; because you should be able to live the same life in an unindustrialized world - just in case ).

Senior year in high school: bed at 2 am, awake at 6:15am. Everyone knows the best TV shows are on at 12-2am. Especially on sundays. Not usually as important on weekdays back then. It was just "Look at this lovely sword, you can cut anything - even pieces of wood!" ...which is why it would usually be video games instead of TV monday - friday.

Now, if anyone wants an interesting game during a car ride; I've got one for you:

We can call it...cyclic nature or something...it's not really important.

What you do is: think of a subject, then have your friend next to you say the first thing that comes to mind which that subject reminds them of. Then you keep going until you come back to the original subject. They can be short or long (and are generally more fun if you don't specifically try to get back to the original topic).

Example:
1. The topic is 'a hill'
2. Hobbits
3. Tolkien
1. Books
2. paper
3. trees
1. forest
2. landscape
3. hill.

[of course, landscape could go to almost anything: nature, painting, drawing, yard work...whatever]

Of course, this really doesn't help you get to sleep...but if you're bored in a car it can work out nice. Plus, you can take scenic examples as your cyclic starting point. Pass a hill, then that can be your topic...or whatever.

I've got something like that. I have an Ultraman alarm clock and the sound it makes for the alarm is horrendous. Bombs exploding, firearms discharging, klaxons blaring. I have to put the alarm clock on the other side of my room because if I put it next to my bed, I'll slap the damn thing off and continue sleeping. The thing is, even though it's on the other side of the room, when it goes off I dive towards it. Not just throw my covers off and run to the other side, I literally mean dive towards it like an action hero. Mostly this wakes me up, but there are times when even after all that I collapse onto the floor and continue sleeping. The worst case scenario is that I climb back into bed and not wake up until after whatever event that required me to wake up early had passed.

Dr. l337 has it completely, 100 % correct.

However, the most powerful thing you can do is get a pattern running. See, your pattern is 3 PM - 6 AM. Change the pattern to 11 AM - 2 AM over the course of around a week or two. Your body will become accustomed to it naturally.

Also, over the course of a month, get a tradition running. Basically, have "pre-sleep activities" that you do before bed that send the signal to your subconscious that sleep time is nearing.
