Falling Asleep

How do you do it?
Well, it's currently... *checks*... 2:08am here in the UK, and i'm not in the least bit tired. This isn't usually a problem as i can sleep in every day, but tomorrow i've got something that i can't miss which i have to leave for at about midday. Staying awake is out of the question, i know i won't stay up all night and i'll most likely sleep in.

This is all mainly due to the fact that my sleeping pattern is pretty screwy, i wake at 1-2pm and go to sleep at about 6am or so.

So yeah, how do you make yourself fall asleep when you don't feel all that tired? This is something i've never really been able to do.

Before, watching Blade Runner would make me fall asleep without fail (Great movie, just has that effect on me) but i don't have a DVD copy of it and no VCR. Bleh!

    Sleeping pills = pwn.

Unfortunately, I've always wondered the same thing. (about falling asleep)

I jsut lay down, turn off lights, get into bed, close eyes, and just think of pointless things.

Listen to calming or repetitive music. I usually fall sleep with headphones in and I wake up in the morning and my ipod is hanging precariously over the edge of my bed, which in is an effective way to wake me up

I've tried both music and just trying to sleep, i can't do either.

If there's music i listen closely to the music, it keeps my attention which keeps me awake, and just lying i just think, again, that just keeps me up too. I'm one of those people that only sleeps when it happens.

The problem is that the circadian cycle, when left free running is about 25 hours, so you tend to go to sleep later and later if you controll the lighting conditions and not the sun.

The real trick is to not let it get to you, keep some schedule, insist on going to sleep the same time every night unless you really have to do something else. That way you keep the time you go to sleep from migrating towards 6 in the morning over a few days.

No matter how tired I am, it always takes me a good 30-45 minutes of laying in bed to finally fall asleep. The only thing that's ever gotten me asleep almost instantly is sleeping pills. Many year ago I took a trip to Australia, and the time difference is about 12 hours, so being able to swallow a pill and be knocked out was quite helpful.

Read something, it makes me tired even if it aint boring. Try a comic when you're getting tired you continue reading if it is any good and when you finaly finish you're very tired. Havent tried pills, I dont like to take pills i think they screw you up somehow if you take em to often (even if you follow the text on em).

Or watch TV in bed if you can.

Normally the more tired I am, the harder it is for me to sleep. I had been paintballing all day long once for a 24 hour scenario, got home, threw myself if bed, and sat there for three hours trying to fall asleep.

Think of it this way, the harder you try to sleep, the harder it is to actually *Get* to sleep. Ironicly, if you're laying down with your eyes closed and all, just thinking or whatenot, and not even worrying at all about sleep, ya' tend to fall asleep.

If it's after a full nights sleep it usually takes at least 13 hours of being awake before I can try to sleep again. And UltimaGecko (much like Mr. T) doesn't advocate drugs. Unless you're sick, then NyQuil is okay (even though it tastes like crap) - that also gets rid of flu symptoms though, they just kind of...make use of the drowsiness inherent in most drugs.

Now, if you want to fall asleep:
Imagine something (not related to falling asleep - though, thinking about what I'd like to dream about can work). As long as it's not a pressing issue it will usually get you tired.

Watching TV seems to work for most people (my vision sucks, so it's basically a big blurry picture without my glasses, and therefore is more of a nuisance than aid).

Most people say you shouldn't eat a while before bed, but if you're really having trouble getting to sleep, you could try eating stuff. Especially big meals and warm meals seem to work best.

Try to exercise until you're tired - although, this can backfire sometimes, and you may end up with too much adrenaline.

Last: clean. Clean your room, your bathroom...whatever. Usually works. Sometimes you might find an old notebook or book or something and you can look at the stuff you're cleaning up and generally get bored doing it...so you'll end up wanting to sleep. This usually takes about half an hour, at least, though.

I hope you're asleep by now. If not, just set as many alarm clocks as possible (set to go off about a minute apart), and then try any (or all) of the things people have suggested.

    Take some drugs + alcohol.

Though I'm guessing a hangover is a no-no for whatever you're doing tomorrow...

    1) Do alot of stuff in the day so you are tired at night
    2) Jump into bed a half hour earlier and just listen to calming music. Not that rock or rap ****.

Concentrait on your breathing. If you concentrate on breathing as to where it's allmost like you have to concentrate to breathe then you go into a sleepy type thing.

I use this thing for meditation and going to sleep, really nifty.

Yeah I'm a pretty heavy insomniac too. I really have no control as to whether I fall asleep or not, unless I figure out some way to totally wear myself out.

what i do when i can't fall a sleep is just basically try to clear my mind of any thoughts

and count back from 100 or 200 to zero really slowly

    i eventually end up sleeping

The most common advice on the subject seems to be: use your bed for nothing but sleep and sex. No reading in bed, no thinking in bed, no whatever else but sleeping and sex. That way, your body is trained to know that in bed = sleep now or the other obvious alternative.

The only way i can fall asleep is by not thinking. I clear my mind and picture nothing, which is basically i think of a black room with nothing in it. I can feel myself drifting off to sleep at this point. After about 2 minutes of this im out.
  • AmbassadorAmbassador Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13942Members
Taboofires is right, I only use my bed to sleep in. Every time I get in it, whether I'm tired or not, I almost instantly fall asleep after like 5 minutes. Works wonders for those nights of caffeine-binging.
