Agreed. But they might be doing that on purpose for a cartoonish effect. BTW, nice Avatar and Sig, you just see FLCL or something?

Making the change from 2d to 3d is something pretty much every old game series that makes a revamped game or a sequel these days does. It just seems to be common sense really. However, not all transitions are going to be pretty.

R.I.P. some of the best drawn and animated pixel art ever. I will mourn your loss verily.

What's up with the faded look to the textures though? The world of metal slug is vibrant and stuff.

They also better have bloody amazing animations on those models though. The freaking cool animations is one of the great things about metal slug.

I'll miss the nice Metal Slug art style, but it's not like the gameplay has to suck now. Looks like you're still on a rail, so to speak. I just want that beautiful pixel art back.

i think if theyre gonna make it 3d it should at least be GOOD 3d.. this just looks like a hl mod... you can make a good 3d game thats still cartoonish

HL mods don't look like that.

If I recall correctly, the original spot I saw this mentioned a lot of the art is still preliminary, particularly the HUD. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a makeover by the time it's out, though my memory could be wrong. Not much sleep lately, you know?

That said, I'm with Tycho. Even if the graphics suck (which, personally, I've seen much worse ), this doesn't mean there's no fun to be had in it.

Metal Slug in 3D would work quite well, IF they went with the side-on perspective Duke Nukem Manhatten Project went for.

This really does look like about 27 different kinds of @$$. I think the Metal Slug series DEFINITELY has the potential to survive the transition to 3D, but not if this is the result. I agree with everything said-- massively low-poly and textures faded to all hell. Where are the DX9 shader effects? Where is the dynamic lighting and real-time shadows? Hell, *cel-shade* it! Metal Slug is a cartoon, and if they lose that all-important element in the transition to 3D, it's over.

they should make a 3d celshaded side scroller with the exact same gameplay that would make it perfect

As far as I can recall, SNK (and now SNK-Playmore or whatever they're called) never did too well in 3d - Koudelka had terrible model animation and poor textures, the 3d incarnations of the Samurai Spirits series (WR and SS64/64-II) were all terrible... I wish they'd stop trying and go back to 2d

Damnit. *smacks head on keyboard*

And coil.. it's probably an arcade machine they're doing this for... those are kinda underpowared.. or at least it won't have DX9

Like some other people in this thread.. yeah, I think gameplay's up in the air. It could be good, who knows. My main problem with those screens are they look stupid in comparison to the greatness of the 2d metal slugs.

y'know I never did understand the obsession with going 3D. If it actually improved games then I might but to be honest it rarely does =/
Don't get me wrong... metroid prime for example was actually pretty good but I still prefer the good old 2D platform adventures of samus a lot more.

If companies have to give into this stupid obsession to make things 3D I don't see why they can't just stick to 2D gaming but give it 3D graphics much like project manhattan as inf mentioned =P

Games companies need to learn to walk before they can run... -.-

I want this for Gamecube, it'll give me something to play with on GC. But the fun part of MS was the look of it and the feel....won't be the same.. time to adjust lads!

That is GARBAGE. Metal Slug was always 2D, and needs to stay that way.

Guys, stop harping on about the graphics. We can't judge yet because as the articles state, the art content here is temporary proof-of-concept stuff.

What we should be harping on about is how Metal Slug just won't work in this perspective.

Why on earth would they release such tripe to the public? It looks bloody awful and the only reason I could see for them doing so is if they don't expect it to progress all that much...
