I bound +jump to mwheel down as I didn't want to fiddle with scripting (also scripting is off on many servers so I wanted something that would always work).

I've mainly been trying at viaduct hive on nothing, nice long wide path there. Its definately noticable when it starts working, but I can't seem to maintain the speed increase for long. After a few jumps I start slowing down, come to a complete stop, and sometimes start moving backwards. I'm guessing this is due to not changing my strafe direction and mouse turn at the right time. Any pointers? <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
bhopping backwards results from strafing and moving the mouse into opposite directions.
Btw. you might want to bind mousewheel up to +jump as well. This way its alot of easier.

Start bhopping with the slowest class available. I recommend to start with a tfc hwg.

Try the things that suit you most first. e.g. if you fail bhopping straight than try the circle or the 8. Download ns_siege007 it has a huge empty room, wich is nice to practice bhopping and airmoving.

Funnily enough, I suck HARD at bhop pre-leap. Once I have leap to 'get me started' however, you can reach silly speeds between landings...

All the good points have really been mentioned, but one more item to add. Wall strafing.

Marines (and skulks,) can walk adjacent to a wall and press their strafe key into it. This resutls in a noticeable speed boast forward. Really useful on those long corridors.

Player 2 cannot compensate for his disadvantage without downloading/creating/installing a 3rd party program.
    So it's a hack.

So why are scripts tolerated?  Anyone? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Scripting refers to using <b>halflifes own special language</b> - a <b>command set created to facilitate customizing your halflife, back from all the way when it was first released</b>. Its that basic - it works just like your console does. You know how you can enter "bind w +forward" in console to bind your w key to forward? Scripting is the EXACT same thing. Theres no third party programms involved, and all "downloading" is usually done by just copy and pasting someone elses scripts (which are done in notepad).

<b>I'm sure theres plenty of documentation on it from Valve too - or dare I say a MANUAL - with, ohmygosh, descriptions of the most important HL commands. But god forbid anyone read that before posting half-assed "h4x" crap.</b>

Don't forget that by aiming up on ladders and strafing into them you also get a speed boost, which is helpful with tall ladders like the ones in viaduct hive on nothing.

Learn something new every day. Scripts are good, its just the people who do not understand them spread their word of evilness about them. Then it becomes a massive scripts are bad movement. And half the servers turn blockscripts 1 on.

Its so massivly annoying that im down to only 3 servers I will ever play on. It sucks so much that out of 400 servers (give or take) that im basically forced to move on to 3. Yeah im sure there are others out there but I like big servers 16+ people. And as of now I've only seen that support 16+ and have blockscripts off. Not only has this dramatically decreased my playing in NS but its making me lose partial interest each time.

I just hope by the next release that by some miracle, some people wake up and go 'Scripts arent evil!' and actually start turning it off.

Sounds like a good dream. Hope it comes true.

dont forget that if you cant bhop you can always look into the ground at 60 degrees boosts speed to about 400 if you do it right.

Thats not exactly what he meant.

"3rd party program" this means that he his talking about hacks not scripts.
    A script is never a 3rd party program, so he must be talking about a hack, right? <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Meh..

Not gonna get into the whole script/bhop thing right now.

Just find it sad that in order to play the game at a high skill level requires the use of outside media (like instructional web-site or this forum), and can't be found simply by practicing and making intuitive deductions.

I mean, wall-strafing, wiggle-walk, nose-grinding, bunny-hopping, all of them are completely unintuitive means of movement to gain a speed boost.

"Hey lookee, dad! If I shimmy my hips, or plow my face into the ground, or scrape my shoulder against the wall, or jump from side to side while turning I can move forward faster than I could by actually just running forward.. funky huh?"

I know, I know.. it's part of the game now.
    I still find it disappointing.
  • taboofirestaboofires Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9853Members
You can get about a 30% speed boost just by holding forward and jumping alot as a skulk (and I'm pretty sure NOT holding duck). No kidding.

So if you're uncoordinated, that's one way for you to get around faster. It's better than a poor bhop, as it's just about as fast, yet you won't stop dead suddenly if you nudge into something or miss your timing.

Or, if you can't do a strafe jump, then it's a reasonable way to start a b-hop. Two jumps holding forward, then let go of forward, hit crouch, and accelerate more.

bunnyhoppping is in the game to balance aliens, if you dont use it then your prone to getting one shotted by a shotty.if you can bhop all on your own then grats to you,if you need a script im SURE you can bhop without it right?

I know, let's not talk about bunny hopping and trying to explain it, but revert back to the good old obviously black and white arguement of scripts!

    Wait, let's not.

It's already been said before, but www.nslearn.org is your best bet, or that nsguide session on sunday could probably help. I don't know if they'll teach bhop though.

I think the fact that mp_blockscripts blocks bhopping scripts makes it evevn more unfair than ever. Now, ppl just use their mouse wheel to bhop, but my mouse wheel doesn't do multiple hits like that.

It's even more unfair because anyone can put a script but not everyone has a mouse wheel that can either bhop or pistol fire.

I'm very happy that my pc's good enough and so is my connexion. I can bhop almost perfectly with my space bar no script.

Oh and bhop is a skill that can be done easier with scripts or mouse wheel...with no help, its more skills and more practice.

And I do belive mp_blockscripts helps the marine side unless you used EVIL scripts.

Is there any way i can press a key once to keep me ducked then it it again when i don't want to be? I find it a major pain to hold down a key while im trying to bhop. Also i don't care about going round the scripts thing..places i play don't block it.
  • Swift_IdiotSwift_Idiot Join Date: 2003-01-05 Member: 11883Members
K-LOL, yes there are duck toggle scripts. However, I don't know them by heart so I can't regurgitate one for you here. If you use the search button, you're bound to find at least five threads with a duck script in them.

I wouldn't use a duck toggle because I actually use the same cfg for both teams, and marines need precise duck control to do some of their more amazing evasions. Plus, if you WANT to turn off duck, say for going directly from bhop to wallclimb in a split second, you have to hit the button, instead of just letting it go. It would be too hard to remember.

Actually, this is perfect to me, and while most agree, is the line between a 'good' and 'bad' script. Although even in the course of writing this, it's hard to define.

The first one is simply a timesaver, much (to me) like a bind to say a few things at once, or evolve without using the menu. The second one however, allows you to play the game more efficiently than someone not using one. It's a very hard thing to explain over text clearly I find, as it's largely a 'gut feeling' of what seems right or wrong.

However, this is my own opinion, and I don't script a thing. If I was playing using any form of console wizardry, I'd feel like I wasn't achieving it myself. The closest I get is mwheel for jump, which I've always done since pre-HL anyway.
