Well actually balancing combat is really simple and it has been mentioned over and over again by forlorn (and recently rennex & co): Remove the gl, webs & xeno. Keep the current spawn & gestatingsystem and you have a winner.
It seems that Co is currently reaching '2.0' stages: People have actually mastered the gamemode far enough to get a relatively level playing field (the same happened to Classic in 2.0). That's a very good sign because it means balance tweaking does not have to trade off between two entirely different gamestyles anymore. That said, please note that seeing how Co and Classic are supposed to stay as close as possible, I doubt that a removal of whole abilities or weapons will happen. Let's see what Flayra will do.

Currently we are ?fighting? a wave of newbie players because Natural-Selection got featured in a German TV game magazine.
Even though I prefer to play a marine I played a lot of alien combat and I think redemption is very effective especially as Onos. After reaching Onos with redemption it?s very seldom I get killed (3-4 deaths with 20-30 kills). And it takes no skill to run into a group of marines and getting some kills till redemption saves me.
