You must be thinking of something else. The Green Mile is the film with Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan about the life of an innocent man on death row. I'd have to say it's probably the most "tragic" film I've seen. The word suits it well.
After that, I'd throw in another vote for Requiem for a Dream. Most depressing thing I've ever seen, and definitely tragic. It's a brutally honest film about addiction by the director of Pi.

hhhmmm. tragic movies..
"American Beauty" was pretty tragic.
"Das Boot" OMG Everything was for nothing in the end. And the captain who tried so hard to save his men suceeds only to go home and watch everyone die there.

Movies that match the hype of Steel Magnolias, but, unlike Steel Magnolias, actually leave you sad afterwards.

The Last Samurai was pretty depressing at the end...
"Lorenzo's Oil". It's a diabilities movie, but involving a boy. But the true conflict's with his parents and the hell they go through. This movie was able to hold a rowdy 9th grade Health class speechless. Try that for measure.
"The Killer". Ever feel that whatever you do, you can't solve everything, even when you take the most drastic of measures and sacrifices? Considered John Woo's masterpiece.
