Well, I'm considering buying a new computer (Afterall, Geforce 2 laptop with pentium III isn't going to last forever.

Well, looking around in the gaming mag.
There's some obvious option like Dell and Alienware. But we all know they're overpriced.

Then there're slightly less obvious like ibuypower or hypersonic.

The slightly-less-than-state-of-the-art from ibuypower cost like $1600 at most, while Dell and Alienwhere cost $3000.

But are these lesser-known manufacturers reliable? Anyone got any experience with em?

PS: please refrain from "build it yourself" comment.

Could you tell us why you're against building it yourself? (and there are several other threads with recommendations as to prebuilt mfg's).

I'm not going to say it, but is there any particular reason why you could'nt?

I never even opened a computer case in my life and I managed to build my computer and get it running....

    But if you're Hell-Bent on not building, I would suggest <a href='http://www.falcon-nw.com' target='_blank'>Falcon Northwest</a>

You can go half way on the "build it yourself" option. Buy all the kickass parts you want/need from newegg etc. Then take said parts to a computer store and have them build it for you for like 50-100$. I did that and they even warranty what they build for you. Honestly is it that hard people??. Im tired of D**kheads buying a crappyity crap crap premade computers from dell etc then bitching about its performance being crap.
THIS is why computer gaming is second to consoles. I guess its just stupid people. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It would really be much cheaper to built it yourself from Newegg.

Yes. Listen, DO NOT buy prebuilt computers for several reasons:

    1) Big-name companies such as Dell overcharge you for parts.
    2) The aformentioned companies use slower, modded-down stuff.
    3) Their tech support SUCKS. You can probably get better tech support on these forums than you could on the phone.

That being said, build your own. It will be avery rewarding experience anyhow.

Let's just say it's politics. My folks don't have that much trust in me or the local computer store. They do trust the big name.

    Not my choice.

Dont buy Dell, they use the low cost components and the thing still runs pretty hot.

Try a local computing shop most will build one for you and the money you save from pre-built PCs allows you to get better components.

Like I said, they only trust things with a brand.

My folks are very skeptical about stuffs being custom built.

Buy parts, assemble in dead of night, spraypaint Dell on side. Badabing.

lol, that might work. But actually to make that to work, i'll have to fake Dell electronic receipt or bank statement for my parents oversea.

I would still say Falcon Northwest. They can build you a pretty sweet gaming rig for less than the $3000 Dell crap.

As a bonus, they have the largest list of options that I have ever seen. And their customization system is awesome too.
  • IsamilIsamil Join Date: 2003-11-25 Member: 23552Members, Constellation
Falcon also isn't really well known enough to convince his parents.
Really, try and convince your parents that you don't need to buy from a big brand. Take prescribtion(sp omg) drugs for example. Most people buy the brand name for a higher price. Generic is cheaper and exactly the same thing. But it doesn't come in a big package so people won't trust it. Same with computers kind of, expect if you don't buy from a big name you actully get something better instead of the same thing.

Try to tell your parents what differs the big brands from self build systems.
They actually take low quality hardware, build it in a case with big-brand-name-on-it-in-big-letters and sell it for horrendous high prices!

    Just get your parents to read this thread <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

if you absolutely must get a brand name pc, go somewhere and get one for $400 (the ones that come like that after rebate), then get your parents to fork over an extra $400 so you can replace the craptacular parts that they put in there.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Buy a craptacular brand name, act **** off when it sucks, and start raging about how those big companies are horrible and you could build your own for half the price and get twice the power. Then take the extra money and upgrade the craptacular one, thereby convincing your parents that you can build one. Then uh, spraypaint Dell on it!

Kill your parents. It's your money you can spend it how you want.

For a good premade computer check out LOCAL shops, and have them do it, so you can still tell them what you want in it (and not get ripped off)

It's not name brand then, so his parents won't be happy with it.
  • AmplifierAmplifier Join Date: 2004-02-19 Member: 26708Members, Constellation
Oh, it has to be a brand name, I thought it was a lack of trust.

Then get a gateway/dell.. Just try and get it without any "extra" software packages.

Point out to your parents that you aren't buying from "no name" companies. Show them the AMD website, ATI or Nvidea website, Asus website, and maby corsair or kingston website. These companies are hardly small names, hell several of them are BIGGER than Dell or Gateway. Explain to them that computer parts are standardized and that once you have all the parts putting them together isn't much more of an ideal than building a new shelf from Ikea. Download some 'how to build a computer' tutorials and show your old man how simple the process is.

I had this same situation a while ago. My parents wanted to get me a computer, but they didnt want me to build my own. Finally, after much research, documentation and negotiation they gave in.
