Hell yes. Bring it on; I'll take everyone on, from the dogs of hell to the Protoss. It would be quite... interesting to experience the perception of a skulk, assuming the VR is of the Neuromancer/Matrix type and not some crappy motion sensor deal like in Snow Crash. You'd have to relearn all you motor functions, giving the Marines lots of free kills. On the bright side, if it was Snow Crash type VR I'd get in shape real, real fast by running from aliens and dodging rockets all the time and playing as vaugely humanoid aliens like the fade would be easy. I don't think pain would be a problem - simulate it with a dull pain, nothing serious, almost just a tingling sensation to designate hit location.. Basically, reduce the pain to easily tolerated levels, but make it so the user feels it when his avatar's body slams into the ground after a long fall or gets a spear thrust through his chest.

Of course, at the end of the day after playing through hell I'd probably be huddled in the corner mumbling to myself, a shell-shocked veteran of World War II games and terrifying experiences never meant for humans.

I doubt alot of the stuff you guys are talking about would happen anytime soon I see something more like this comming out

    VR 1.0!

    (where ever picture appears)

    The suit

since all of the things in the picture are currently made (except maybe the red stick man ) and used in many action moves (the wire system adn sensor cameras most notably) The user (we'll call him bob redstick) would wear a pressure suit that also had electrical wring system running through it, so that when say someone was shot in the kneecap a electrical shock would be sent into the area causing the muscles to flinch and such (much like how a weak electrical pulse can cause your fingers to move on there own) only if I shot you in the kneecap the pulse would remain constant for said period of time, no pain but also no god complex either.

    THe wiring system

The wiring system used in many action movies (and almost everyother) would stay the same for the most part only difference is that the computer would control it. (perhaps on a rotatable mount)

IE. same you playing Tribes 5 (please god let there be a tribes 5) and you activate your jet pack the wiring system will pull you into the air (and in you jump keep you in the air.

Skipping the sensor camera's since there not much that needs to be said except that they record teh data then relay it to the computer than processes it and etc.

    The tread mill

again not much is different it would also relay data to the computer and slow down/speed up depending on Bob redstick's movement.

of course the eperience wouldn't be complete in bob restick was just staring at a white wall now would it? A helmet/headset with built in microphone for talking to players and issueing orders to the VR computer ( for example leaving the server)

Do you think technology could reach a point where our own brains are the processor? Imagine hooking yourself up to a database of ideas and symbols structured in a way that can be understood by your brain, and then your brain would process the game information itself, so it would/could be any experience that you can possibly imagine.

As long as I was in no danger of dying, I always had the ability to stop, and I could control the level of pain, I would do it. Once it crosses over to reality, it's no longer fun, is it? Well, maybe for the pain junkies and those who need the "rush" of feeling a zombie claw at your eyeballs... but I was talking about the normal gamer.

Considering the human brain only uses like 4% of its self sure!

Only problem is I hope I never get this message

I'm not sure I want to smell such things, or feel such pain... I think I'll stick to sights and sounds. Besides, it would be strange

Maybe - if you could adjust the 'sense' settings to however you like? But I think the government would step in - can you imagine how many people might get physical problems from playing these games, or maybe become so immersed in something that they forget to shut it out... like if it's so real that they forget that they're in a game and to turn it off.

    Or maybe I'm thinking ahead of myself... ^^;;

lol I wrote this post topic yesterday and guess what happened tonight after reading all the replies...

I went to sleep and had a DOOM 3 dream lol.

And it had zombies and those spider things in it ARRGH!!

It was kinda like Resident evil in that there were 2 of us (I was with my friend) and we only had 1 pistol to defend ourselves with it.

We were trapped in a bathroom with spider thingys coming out of the air vents and workers turned zombies in the bathroom stalls lol.
And just Like in DOOM3 when we opened a door to try to get out there was a trite waiting on the other side just to jump in our faces when it was opened.

Even more amuzing was the fact that there was actually one time when my friend told me to go find more ammo. So I was opening up all these employee lockers and I found spare magazines and another pistol inside one of them just like in Deus Ex or Half life lol.

Yes Virtual reality would definitly be very fun.

Resident Evil is supposed to be a scary game? I thought it was pretty pathetic. Good gameplay but no atmosphere. Between the opening door effect, the third person perspective so you can't see ****, and the often lame cutscene...
