for classical music, one of my favorites now is the Well Tempered Clavier by Bach. This is a set of awesome sounding piano etudes. They rock.

other good pieces of classical music:
    anything by Charles Ives
    Jacques Ibert
Gregory Gabrieli (wrote a lot of brass quintets)
Stravinsky (Firebird, Rite of Spring, and Petrushka)
    Elgar (Enigma variations)
    Lizst (piano etudes are great)
Chopin (wrote arguably most famous set of piano etudes ever)

anything by Paganini for violin. I <3 paganini, not just because his music is so technically challenging, but they sound <i>impressive!</i> definitely crowd pleasers.

    For metal:

Hypocrisy (Possibly the greatest metal band EVER!!!!!!!!)
    Zyklon (World Ov Worms ONLY)
    Emperor (all is good)
    Myrkskog (DEATHMACHINE ONLY)
Therion (This is real orchestral metal)
    Sins of Thy Beloved
In Flames (nothing off of Reroute to Remain)
    Nile
    Dying Fetus
    Dimmu Borgir (old material only)
    Slayer
    Metallica (80's ONLY)
    The Project Hate

That should start you off. I really had to rake my brain for this list, I really lost interest in metal after I explored all it had to offer and found EBM/Futurepop/Industrial/Goa trance far more appealing.

    So I make techno now. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I <i>just</i> got home from Warped Tour and... wow.

I saw Coheed & Cambria, Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Alexisonfire, Rufio, Taking Back Sunday, Silverstein, and Tiger Army. CoCa, Anti-Flag, and Bad Religion were the highlights for sure, all amazing musically and putting on a good show, too.

Bad Religion was probably my favorite of the night over all though, it was the last show I went to and it was a great way to end it. There was a giant pit in the middle full of punk kids slamdancing and pushing and shoving and just having a great freaking time. Greg has awesome stage presence too, he's a funny guy. Not to mention the awesome way they tackle politics in their songs which I agree almost 100% with.

As far as opera goes, <i>Carmen</i> is definitely a highlight, and another familiar one is <i>I Paggliachi</i>, by some one-hit-wonder of the verismo opera age. You will definitely recognize the big tenor solo there. <i>The Barber of Seville</i> is great if you see it live with a translation; there is a lot of laughs in there. If you're looking for some *thicker* operas, you could try something by Strauss, or one of Wagner's operas or music dramas. For the record, Ride of the Valkyries pwns j00 nubs.

Copland's Appalachian Spring is probably my favorite classical piece. Some of the progressions in that bring me to tears when I'm in the right mood.

    Sonic Mayhem

They produce game soudtracks, but they produce GOOD game soundtracks.

    Namely, the famous Q2 soundtrack.

EDIT: I like them more than I do the UT2k4 soundtrack peoples, but only by a little.

This thread is bizarre. Metal and classical fans offering their favorites... what's next, cats and dogs living together?!

The best metal combines head crushing riffs and drum blasts with some kind of orchestra, or operatic vocals, tbh.

    back to recommending those classics...

I really like <b>Clare De Lune</b> by Debussy, while i know its 'overplayed' its really kick **** (and was sampled by amon tobin in 'back from space' [i think])

im falling back on my Alevel music class for compossers here.. <b>Mahler</b> is good, often dark and forboding (his daughter died at 4).. his 1st, 2nd and 5th symphonies are worth a look, in fact the 3rd movement of his fifth is such sad music it was chosen by Bernstien to be played at JFKs funeral (totally blows adagio for strings away on the depres-o-meter).

<b>Shostakovich</b> and <b>Stravinsky</b> are also worth checking out, for shostakovich try his 2nd Symphony, often dark sounding stuff with the obligatory happy ending thrown in for the benefit of the russian government (and his own wellbeing).
as for Stravinsky his ballets are great, <b>Firebird</b> and <b>Petrouchka</b> are good and you can see his style working up to <b>'The Rite of Spring'</b> which is a very dark piece, so much so in fact that when it was first performed in the 20s it was so abstract and troubling to the audience that it caused a riot to break out.

You know, when I listened to my dad's CD of the Firebird for the first time, I had no idea what was going on. It didn't seem like the music conveyed any story at all. But back then i was like, 8 years old.

He can do any genre of music better than anyone in said genre.
