A Simple Puzzle

please look first
Ok, I have a puzzle for you all. Now before you go about trying it, keep in mind this little fact: It takes the average 6-year-old less than 10 seconds to figure it out, and it takes the average college student over 5 minutes to figure it out. Now I'm not saying any of you are average, some of you may be smarter...or even stupider! J/k. Now moving on to the puzzle.

Turn the Roman Numerals IX into six.

You could do that. Or, remove the bottom half of the X (leaving a v), and put that in front of the I.

Add and S... does this mean I get to go back to kindergarden?

Or cut both along the horizontal, which leaves you with 6 "sticks" that you can form into a tally.

Or press "backspace, backspace, 6"

you could put a "- III" after it as well....
yes i know that's a pathetic attempt

I've been thinking about this a little bit. And since it seems like the "sIX" is an acceptable answer, then these rules are very lax.

Simplest solution, declare IX to mean 6.
• Dorian_GrayDorian_Gray Join Date: 2004-02-15 Member: 26581Members, Constellation
I can think of tons of ways...
2 * sqrt(9) = 6
9 / 1.5 = 6
S+IX = six
9 - 3 = 6
9 * 3 - 21 = 6
(9 / 2) + 1.5 = 6
etc...

Are there any rules or anything?
• ZiGGYZiGGY Join Date: 2003-01-19 Member: 12479Members
yeah the rules are ludicrously lax, but if I remember correctly from school (this is a fair while ago now mind :S) you are supposed to cover the top half of IX which leaves VI upsidedown.

it takes the average college student to figure it out because they are thinking of a billion ways to do it while a six year old can do it in 5 seconds. just put an s infront. thats what a six year old would do. he wouldnt add an exponent to it.

Well, given the puzzle rules, erasing the "XI" and writing down "6" would be acceptable.

Which makes the puzzle officially suck.

If anyone ever wasted my time with this puzzle in real life I would take a pen and carve a number 6 into their face.
