It'll run just fine.

EDIT: If you do upgrade, make it your video card, preferably to a DX 9 ATi card.

I think you will be able to run it, but the 3dcard is the bottleneck in your config...

    hl2 sysreq I saw somewhere a while ago :/
    700mhz Processor
    128 mb of RAM
    64 mb Video Card

What should I upgrade my video card to? Geoforce 4 TI? (I'm looking for something not too expensive, reasonably good and has shaders)
  • Crono5Crono5 Join Date: 2003-07-22 Member: 18357Members
GF4 is DirectX 8. If you're going to spend the money to upgrade, just wait a while until you can afford DX9. Half-Life 2 isn't out yet, anyway.

Ati is the way to go. Dont get a Geoforce 4 TI.

Well, I would go with the GeForce 5200, it has 128mb DDR and and shaders I think and you can get it for around $50.

If you want to look at some more video cards, head on over to the video cards section of TigerDirect.

Just don't actually buy from TigerDirect.

    I've heard stories.

    EDIT:

HALF-LIFE 2 WILL RUN ON YOUR MACHINE JUST FINE

It just won't look as pretty as possible. A videocard upgrade would help it look prettier, but just wait for a while until you can afford a good one.

I'd say wait until Valve comes out and says what it will run. Remember all the bs coming out of peoples mouths w/ doom 3 "omgz it will require 3ghz computar to run min specs and r teh x800 pro xt 5000 minimum in 640x480zs!" and it ends up running on a 1.5ghz w/ a Geforce 3...

You'll definately need a new video card though.

(LEt's just say a Radeon 9600 Pro or XT would run HL2 DAMN well on that system.)

I'd say check your computers manual to check the RAM speed that you're motherboard is built for. Also, about the videocard, don't just waste on a little geforce TI card, that card isn't much better then the one you have now. The Ati 9600 XT's are pretty good, and the 9800 Pro 256 MB's are even better. But those cards are a little expensive, but if you wait the price on them might drop.

Edit: NEVER WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A NVIDIA FX CARD. EVER. NEVER EVER.

    NEVER EVER EVER.

By the way, while this thread is here.

Will Unreal 3 run on my machine?

I have an intel Pentium 90mhz Processor, 4 megs of RAM, a 100 meg HD and 850k of video memory.

    Will it run?

The ati 9600XT is a nice card and so is the 9800pro The nice thing about the XT is the fact that you get a half-life 2 voucher with it. The same goes for the 9800XT (which is faster then the 9800pro), but they have to carry the trademark build by ati or graphics by ati...

Well since he is talking about HL2 it would only make sense to reccomend an ATI card. I would say get a 9600xt if you are tight on money, but if you have a little to spare go with a 9800pro 256. But my personal reccomendation is go with the Asus 9800pro 256 mb. This being because asus, in order to deal with the growing demand for 9800pro and less of a demand for xt's, starting just flashing bioses on the XT's down to pro levels. So if you want, you can just flash it back up and have an XT for the price of a pro(or a little more). Before you call bs on that, I did it with mine an 2 friends and it worked perfectly.

DO NOT buy a geforce 5200 under any circumstance, even for an FX card that thing is crap. I can guarentee the fan will give out on you in less than half a year, and not long after the card will fry. The only thing you will get from a 5200 that you didn't have before, is the extra expence of another card when it dies.

Kay, one last question about video cards, every site about my computer (Dell Dimension DIM4550) says the video card slot is an AGP, yet in Device Manager it says my card is in PCI Slot 1, does that just mean it's running in PCI mode?

You might just have a PCI video card but still have an AGP slot. Perhaps open up the case and check?

Probably not, its probably just a glitch.

Oh, and HL2 will run fine, but it will look alot better on a card with DX9 support (geforce FX series and ATI 9000 series)
