<div class="IPBDescription">over at PHL...</div> These are taken from Siggraph 2004, which featured Valve's art-maestro Viktor Antonov as guest speaker.

Take a look at some of the slides, this should shut-up those that think Half-Life 2's graphics still aren't "all that".

    now THAT is photorealistic..

if you're gonna pimp a game, try to show the good shots.. not really nasty ones like the last thread.

Err... that's real-life, amigo. Some of the shots are ones the art director took from around Europe as reference.

[edit]Bah, beaten to the punch. :P[/edit]

The new shots are quite nice though. Especially the first one and the subway/underpass/whatever one.

All of the shots there are NOT(repeat: NOT!!!) screenshots. There are a few that are obviously paintings or photoshopped images(too bad there isn't any commentary to show otherwise). My proof:

    <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/screenshot.asp?src=/features/articles/sigg04/phl_c17_Slide19a_hi.jpg' target='_blank'>http://www.planethalflife.com/screenshot.a...Slide19a_hi.jpg</a>

DEFINATELY not a screenshot. Look on the right- photoshopped person.

That's a real-life, reference shot. None of the shots are photshopped, they are either taken from HL2 or taken from Viktor Antonov's travels round Eastern Europe.

Its called "moving" when you're not posing for a photo Quaunaut, or getting blurred out because you didn't consent to your image being shown. Why would they ever, ever, ever fake a photograph? Durr.

    Negative,

    <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/screenshot.asp?src=/features/articles/sigg04/phl_c17_Slide02_hi.jpg' target='_blank'>this</a> is definately, without a doubt a screenshot. As is <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/screenshot.asp?src=/features/articles/sigg04/phl_c17_Slide05b_hi.jpg' target='_blank'>this</a> and <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/screenshot.asp?src=/features/articles/sigg04/phl_c17_Slide19b_hi.jpg' target='_blank'>this</a>.

And well, really the page has a TON of screenshots. Almost 50% of the pictures.

as for the motion blurred guy.. it's part of the photo, probably kept the shutter open longer so that the light in the tunnel burned into the image better. Makes for cool lighting effects and more vivd colors in this case.

    RL:

    <img src='http://www.planethalflife.com/features/articles/sigg04/phl_c17_Slide07a_hi.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    HL2:

When people have trouble distinguishing RL from HL2, you know the game looks good...

Needless to say, all of these pics are great!

    ESP this one:

Yeah, when I saw those two pictures side-by-side, I had to look for a while and figure out which one was Half-Life 2. I was pretty sure it was the second when I saw the Combine Soldier in the background.

You sure this is RL? It looks like some sort of train system, and I'm pretty sure they don't have trains criss crossing like that in RL trainstations.

The only reason I had trouble with some of the pics is because <i>neither</i> of them looked real. Not because they both looked so detailed. But yes, quite kick ***, especially considering the last thread's less than convincing shots.

Personally I love the HL2 look. Part cartoony, part grainy painting, part realistic "junkyard" feel... And from the videos, the same goes for the weapons and the feeling of the game. Yum Yum.

Yeah, it definitely has its shortcomings (pretty hideously blocky architecture in places) but every game engine does. Look at Doom 3's excruciatingly low poly beastie models.

    hmmm...

it's either a painting of sorts, (dunno what the hell was used for that)

Or a CG rendered scene. Either way, there is an artist's signature at the bottem, so...
