As said before , don't bother finding an extraordinary meaning for your brief life. The motto "have fun/don't be a jerk" is reasonable and not too constraining , you should stick to that if you have the willpower to.
If the values your elders taught you make you depressed , unhappy or frustrated , reject them. Live your life on your own terms. Of course , it can take much more courage than living a pre-built life with an unshakable set of morals.
You have no reason to be ashamed of your origins , or your dark side. Everyone's got vices , and it's a good thing if you're aware enough to not take yours for virtues. No one ever was a saint , there are just people who love to be known for their good actions , and keep their evil ones for themselves. When dealing with people who take too much offense of your wrongdoings , it doesn't take long to find out they aren't any better than you.
Be reasonably passionate. Staying rational at all times will leave a bitter taste when your life is ending. By reasonably passionate , I mean don't hesitate to be irrationally passionate , but only for what you think is worth it (love , freedom , art , science , anything that rules your life)
