Dear DesertCombat Fans,

I know most of you are upset about the recent rumors of DC being dead. As you
know, Trauma Studios has been busy working on future titles that will bring
the next level of gameplay to your PC. During that time, I tried my best to
find time to continue DC, but with no success. At this point, there are no
future updates currently planned.

DC however is far from dead; it’s the community like yourselves that make it
strong. With you, DC would have never existed. It’s because of you that DC
was popular, I just did my best to collect the suggestions you have all given
us. I would like to thank the DC testers, DC developers and the community for
doing so much for the DC team, and DesertCombat. I am confident that the
community will continue to extend DC and help keep it fun and exciting.

Sincerely,

Frank DeLise

So what does this have to do with NS? As you may know, gamespy had these weird voting competitions between the top mods... it would always between NS and DC if I can recall correctly. DC always won (people thought they cheated <_< ) but the point is DC lost in the end, gg.

I for one am kinda happy for the mod makers who most of them have good jobs, other than that NS beat them in the game of endurance.

I was gonna buy BF so I could play DC..... Nothing could beat NS though (CS maybe.)

This is probably a nubish question but will NS be modded off of HL2?

I don't see how the devs taking off makes a mod dead. If Charlie and the rest of UWE were taken over by body snatchers tomorrow and declared that they weren't working on NS anymore, this community would still have the mod on their hard drives, and there would always be somebody out there running a torrent for it, no matter how many cease and desist orders the evil doppelgangers tried to slap everybody with.

Game hasn't been updated for over 6 months

Trust me a mod with no updates and is left unbalanced will just die out, unless the community feels like contining to play the same exploits and unbalanced nuances over and over again, because nothing will ever change up unless a dev comes along and makes it different.

If charlie officially annouced his departure from this game and didn't give the source code out to anyhow to work on, I would leave in under a day

I really don't see this as a reason to celebrate, or a reason to say "NS won in the end." I personally never played Desert Combat. Heck, I don't think I've even seen a screenshot of it. But I imagine that it had its dedicated fans, much like we have ours. And now those fans are left without a future for their favorite game.

If anything, this is a time to try to welcome some of those people into our own community, rather than try gloating over the grave of a mod we never directly "competed" against (except for one now-insignificant gamespy-hosted vote).

Between free mods, there isn't competition. Too bad DC did not make it; a good, free mod is always welcome.

Hope they at least give a similar message with NS... whenever they come back from the vacation...

Mmh. DC was fun in the beginning (beta 2 or something like that). But then they started to make maps of certain blocks in Baghdad... how sick is that? Who really wants to go there and fight?

Games are about phantasy and creativity, not reality. That's what I like the most about NS: its fun mentality.

I play Desert Combat a lot and, while unhappy with the news, I'll continue to play it. Nothing beats piloting a UH60 low over a large city while having your two gunners providing cover and trying to stop the other team shooting you down with stingers. Think Black Hawk Down and you'll get the picture. Different maps give you different kinds of battles. Some involve large battlefields with tanks, planes and artillery. Some others are just troops in cities, their only form of transport being a crappy car found on the street or a hummer.

It's a shame to hear the devs are leaving. They left the game in a good form at least.

It's funny actually, I've been a big fan of both mods and it's been fun seeing which one would release updates first. NS won. But the race was still intresting. It's sad to see such a great mod be left to collect dust, especially since there was never even a 1.0 release. But I do know that Battlefield 2 will be better because of it. With the DC dev team working with Dice we can expect BF 2 to have a DC feel to it but with a better engine and more features. And why so much hate to the DC. I can understand the CS bashing but leave DC alone, it's not even on the HL engine.

It's sad to see them go, but I definitely understand his plight. I've been trying to work on both UWE stuff (ie, 'next game') while trying to also work on NS, and it's incredibly difficult. I know that I could never let development stop on NS though, so I decided it was time to start delegating to capable people.

Hence, ElvenThief, Voogru, MadMaxx, etc. These guys have been in the community a long time, and they're going to do a great job. I'm still handling the design and balance, but hopefully I can do that in 10-15 hours a week (ie, keep it as a 'hobby').

Good luck to Trauma Studios! We are both transitioning from into game companies, let's see how we do.

I wonder why they didn't do that... It's true that any random person can start editing Desert Combat files because of the way the BF Engine works (it's a nice game, but the engine is horrid). So, I doubt it will just stop. People will continue to develop it unnofficially.

Actually in a way this is somewhat happening. If you read the DC forums there is a group of testers and soon to be devs who are making Desert Combat Forever.

Even though it isn't trama's work it'll be a team that will try to continue DC, hopefully for the better.

BF1942 has the worst bullet registry of any game I've ever played. It's sad. -- especially the pistols.

    Translated:

The BF1942 engine is old, so we decided to abandon one of the most popular mods for any game avliable. We hope you don't mind. We are busy working on a nearly-identical mod for some other engine that looks neat - probally HL2, doom3, or battlefield2. We hope you aren't mad, because we really don't care.

Be glad flay isn't like this.

DC was an enjoyable game, but it had it's flaws like most multiplayer game's. It's a shame that they're not going to be working on the mod anymore, but there's always Desert Combat Extended. But, that's even worse. They think implanting rockets that autoaim would be good for balance. =/
