Unfortunately, I'm forced to bring up the first and most important of the unwritten laws of mapping... or the first and most important in my opinion.
That being, don't publish pictures of your first attempts at mapping.
Why, well.. because certain smacktards will make some rude comments about it and generally discourage you from ever touching a mapping program ever again. As already demonstrated here..

I'm going to be honest, the map isn't great, its shoddy, boxy and ugly.. as already said.. But hell, everyone starts off like that.
If you can show me a mapper who didn't start out with a boxy, ugly shoddy map. I'll show you someone with selective memory who is too proud to admit they made mistakes while learning too.

I guess after going through the first unwritten law of "Don't post early work because people are ***holes".. Well, yeah. I'll just leave it at that for now.

Suggestion: Stop working on trying to make an NS map and just work on getting accustomed to the basic workings of your mapping tool.

*sighs*

And thus from the deepest regions of the sea, on younder fields at night, the deamons doth take flight.

1) Yes, I know I spelled it wrong. I wrote the origional damned post at like, 3 am! I asked Delrosa to change it for me... no response yet.

2) Yes, I am new. Thank you Major Chrome, I appreciate that.

3) I am still working on the walls you nitwit. You really think I'd keep a single texture wall?

4) Yes... it's a box... it's a simple ready room made of a box... hence, the READY ROOM is not my first map, but rather my first attempt at making something worth using. If you'd seen my first map... you'd prolly swoon at the looks, then die as you realized I had over 10,000 brushes in an area that, on the monitor, is roughly the size of your hand... and I wondered why it took forever to try to compile on my laptop 0o'

In short, if you dont' have anything nice to say, please don't say it. I know it's nothing professional, but please, keep criticism constructive! Lord knows, I MIGHT actually figure out what I'm doing in time!

oh, and ANeM, don't worry. No smacktard, is gonna stop me from mapping... I'm too stubborn

Jean, there is a swear filter for a reason you know. Such posts could get you a warning or even a temp ban.

And yes, the readyroom looks like **** (I mean, it does... no offense but it's flat and boring) then why did you post screenshots of it at its current state? Wouldn't it be better to wait a bit longer and post a more detailed readyroom to show how much you have progressed? Just keep mapping, but don't post pics of things that are far from finished, since it will only earn you flames.

WHY ARE YOU STILL IN SOFTWARE MODE?

@ Olmy - Feedback is feedback. If it looks like jesus himself made the map, it's still feedback. If it's goatse in .bsp form, it's still feedback.

I don't see why people would post things on a forum where you traditionally post things to get... of all things... FEEDBACK and then be yelled at because I'm 'hurting his feelings'. If I told him with sunshines and rainbows that it was pretty good for a newbie I'd be lying through my teeth.

Since when is it a rule here that you're not allowed to give negative feedback?

It's horrendous. My first map (outside of two tiny test rooms I filled with entities just to see what flags did what - in no way was that what I'd call a 'release candidate' like this is apparently, so that'd make it my third map) was beautiful. I got compliments saying that it looked as if a pro had made it - I even got told (Alas that map has died in a great hard drive failure many years ago) that it looked too good for a newbie and I decompiled it.

What am I saying? That I'm the best and no one can touch me? No, I'm saying that some people are just natural talents, and of course, there will be some people that just don't get it, no matter what, and have to have what a 'brush' is explained to them 5 times before they get it.

He wanted feedback, he got feedback. I could understand if Jean luc had been dicking around with hammer for a whole of twelve minutes, but he's been mapping (or at least requesting mapping help) since... march? I think?

Now... my concern is that Jean luc seems almost happy with how it looks. Why is this a concern? Because if you can't look at your own creation and say to yourself 'Hahah this thing is sad,' if you honestly think something like that could compare to ns_bast, I can't imagine there's much hope for you. If you don't have a knack for design, style, and the ability to take criticism from others and yourself, I don't see how there's much hope in the mapping future.

Hello there, I'm an arrogant bastard and today we will learn what should we show to the people.

First, you're taking the pics in software mode which makes everything look pixelated and... well, crap. Use OpenGL...

Let's see... for example, that floor only uses one texture, and considering the size of the room it makes it look pretty bad, don't worry about the ceiling too much since you're still learning, when I started it was hard for me to detail ceilings too, try using level differences (the floor will be more than one piece and if you align the textures right will end up looking much better)

The room is just a hexagon, and all the room is "infested", as you might have seen in most NS maps, the alien part of the RR is infested, and the rest has a more clean look to it.

Take a closer look at other maps so you can see how they detailed the maps and get ideas to make yours better, a central platform with a pair of ramps or stairs would help making the floor seem less boring, some pipes on the walls... grates... whatever, just don't give that impression that everything is a single block.

I won't comment on the lighting because it takes some time to learn (loooooong time)

Don't be discouraged if noone likes what you're showing, this mod has high standards, and it takes a good while to make something that most of the people will like. It took me two years of mapping to get an "ok" feedback around this boards... you should aim high, being very critic with your own work is the best thing you can do to improve... it worked for me, at least Oh, and don't "rush" your pics, I usually made several compiles until I got the map "right"... and then posted pics, much better than posting a crappy pic and giving a bad "first" impression of your maps...

Maybe some of this won't make sense since when I make a long post in English I usually start deleting stuff and writing again to make sure it makes sense, but I guess I said everything I wanted to say.

for the last time... it's NOT software mode! It's openGL! I'll take a screenshot of my settings if you wish!

I have it on LOW resolution because my GOOD MONITOR died (overheadted I think cause of the confided space it was in) and I'm on an older one... so my res is maxed for this monitor at like.. 1024 by 768 ... tho i just now realized I was in my medium color pallet (just boosted it to 32 bit now instead of the 16 bit it was in... dunno why it was at 16 bit )

Now, whether that makes a sh*t of difference, I don't know... I don't have time to check right now as I'm supposed to be cutting the grass...

speaking of compiling, I'm only using a fast vis, no 9 point oversampling, and only 1 level bounce.. so yeah, that might be why it looks like software mode?
BTW- mendasp, thanks for the support

Only software mode makes that graphical corruption.

So either your computer is an utter piece of crap and doesn't even HAVE a video card and it's being forced into software by default, or your computer is still a piece of crap and your video card is fried.

I run at 1024 and I have no where NEAR that terrible pixelation. I can only think you're either in software mode, of you're running in 640.

If it *IS* 640, WHY ARE YOU BLOWING THEM UP TO 1024? It just makes it look even worse because the pixels are now the size of my cursor.

NEVER resize pictures UP unless you're confident you can hide the hideous pixelation. I suggest you either get a decent resolution to take the pics with, or you just leave them at 640 (Or, if it's 1024, go DOWN to 640 since it'll look less screwed up)

Just a little rule-of-thumb that I use:
If you can tell the texture is tiled, and it's distracting, then that's a problem, and you need to fix it. (=

Try making a smaller RR, that'll probably help. Try to actually make the room something... Perhaps a cryo-room (ala Aliens), then you'll have a sort of template to work from.

The Intel ExtremeX thing you're talking about is on-board video... No 3D acceleration unless it's a really weird setup, therefore you are actually running in software mode. (Which is odd, I thought NS had blocked software mode)
