Windows XP? Download the MSBlast and some other little patches of what has been going on lately (just not the Online versions, but "network installation" aka full pack). I had a big hassle last time I did that, cause when I started up, I got **** loads of those viruses and whatnot. Also, for anti-virus use Avast! 4. It's free!

well, i formated my computer 2 days ago. and i had like 10 GB files i want to save. so i send all 10 GB files to my other computer and then formated. After that i created 2 parts on my harddrive. 1 for windows and others for games etc. and then i send back all my 10 GB files to my second disc.
i really hate to burn 10 GB files :/

Back up what you think is important to you at the moment.

Trust me, when I first formatted my computer, I forgot to backup everything important for my work....bah....

A firewall?

Firewalls are overrated. It's good if you want some more annoying hassle every-friggen-time you install something or do your normal routines x times slower than before though!

Yes, but it's also good to stop hackers getting into your computer, and stopping viruses like MSBlast from getting to your computer in the first place...

Won't the likes of the MSBlast fix be in amongst the
"Windows Update" when I use the Microsoft website
to update?
Thats one of the first things I install y'see:
Display Drivers (ATI 4.7's)
DirectX 9.0b
Windows Update [and so on....]

Well good luck trying to download the update, as you'll catch MSBlast so that it'll shut down your computer 20 seconds before you'll reach the download button
And for a firewall; I've never really believed in their powers. Seriously! If I wanted a firewall, I'd buy a hardware one because those softwares do absolutely nil, and that's it.

I'd have to second the recommendation of a software firewall. It may not be much, but it's better than nothing. After all... those who use prayer as birth control are called 'parents'. Those who use it for antiviral are called 'infectees' (as the nicest label).

Grab ZoneAlarm Basic at the very least. You can uninstall it later, though I'd recommend keeping it as proof against future worms that DON'T yet have patches available.

Also, keeping your machine patched will NOT keep you 'safe' from new worms. Nor will up-to-date antiviral software. A software firewall will be the most likely (barring idiocy) to keep your machine 'safe', ruling out the possibility of a dedicated filtering box between your machine and the outside world (which is what I use).

It is as said... without a software firewall of some kind, you will be infested within seconds of connecting to the internet. You won't have time to patch before they find you. Your machine will be taken over and pounded.

Love my router. GG hardware firewall. ^^

That's why you should NOT connect to the internet until you've installed the patches varying from msblast to whatnot.. OFFLINE. That's what any sane person would do anyways

The firewall that comes with Windows XP is already enough to prevent the Blaster worm (most probably the first virus you'll encounter after a format, and without using a firewall).
I know this, because I just formatted my system a couple months back. I didn't activate the firewall after reinstalling Windows XP, because I thought I could run Windows Update fast enough to beat the virus. No such luck. After about three restarts, I had already reformatted the system.

Yeah I was at a LAN where a certain "smacktard" (for lack of another name, one less well liked by the swear filter) had Blaster. Within about 30 seconds, all comps but mine were infected (I had ZoneAlarm). It doest use enough RAM/CPU cycles to be noticable (on my comp at least), and it can save you from a reformat. I have a hardware firewall (Linux router comp), but I still have a significant number of TCP ports forwarded to my comp (for BitTorrent and game servers which don't have a linux DS), so a software firewall is a good thing.

Also, dunno if you already had this (in my experience a lot of people never realized this), but you can download all the XP updates and burn them to CD/DVD before reformatting (a use for the free DVD-RAM disc that came with my burner... not much good for anything else, since only a DVD-RAM burner can read it). Windows Update Catalog
