Lets Wait A While

I was thinking of this in regards to another post I read. NS has had a downturn in fun, and the other post described it as "one big high excitement".

I think a factor in "fun" is having lulls - not necessarily in battle, but between them.

I think that there should be an extra 30 seconds or so of "wait" time after a match before the server loads up the next map. It used to be that way - there was time to "hang out" in the RR and talk about highlights. Then they put in the "keep lifeform in RR" update, which was awesome, but then the RR time got shortened substantially.

If the time is extended, then the people who finish as lerks or JPers can bask in their win a bit longer, but give everyone a bit more time to "settle down" before the next round. That makes the next games "highs" that much higher and more exciting.

Let me know what you think.

Yupp. Sound idea, and slow down the start of a game without mp_tournamentmode. Starting it so early usually just makes for weak and undermanned starts.

I think mp_countdowntime should be increased by default in the server.cfg. The setting is really low, so low that after a map change the game starts before even half the players have managed to connect to the server and try to join a team. That really ruins gameplay not have a full squad of marines at the start of the game. On our servers I have it set to "0.42" (25 seconds). Which through trial and error appears seems to be a good value. Usually at about 20 seconds people will be thinking eh aint the game going to start? Then the beeps kick in.

Anyway the default setting in the server.cfg should be high, if server admins want to lower it, then its up to them.

Calling "ready" to start would do it too.

calling ready to start would solve nothing because as soon as peope in a pub realized how to do it then the first person on each team would type it immediately...in fact, knowing how most kids act, it would probably turn into a game to see who could type ready fastest which completely eliminates the purpose of having it. unless you are in a scrim/pub/match setting then ready is pretty useless imo

I don't have too many problems joining a game on time - but a bit more wait on the tail ends of games would encrease my enjoyment quite a bit. I think both ends of a game could use a little more "wait time".

I agree, it is nice to calm down from such an exciting game. NS is the coolest mod I've ever seen for HL, and certainly one of the most addictive <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo--> -> <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I agree, an extra 10 seconds or so before the map changes would be nice. The default countdown time should also be long enough that everyone can join a team and establish basic things like who's comming. 25-30 seconds seems appropriate. Why so many admins don't change this to at least allow everyone to load before it starts is beyond me.

Weren't we talking about situations where almost everyone is still in the RR?

If, say, 4 people have actually joined the game (and the rest are talking about the last round), then chances are pretty good that one side would be paying attention.

Yesterday, I spent 45 minutes on a co_angst, in the middle of talking about it, BLAM map change. Then nobody cares what happened last match.

I wonder if it is physically harming the hearts of the people who get all stressed up all the time since the gamepace is so fast and furios. I mean, your heart is almost constantly beating at a heightened rate until you have played a few days(whereupon you get used to the game and lose the constant adrenaline rush.), and surely that isn't too healthy?(nevermind sitting still all day and hunching your back)

more time at the start to figure out who is doing what would be nice.

maybe one of the resons DMS is the order is because there is no time to form a plan. going sc first can be great but it requires the greatest amount of team work and with no time to figure out who is doing what, sc first is not going to happen.
though unchained chambers may mean no plan need be made. just drop what ever you want and have at them.

a longer start ping so all can connect and join a team would be nice (why did steam have to make you reconnect every time the map changes)
