<div class="IPBDescription">Patents Human Skin</div> You may remember some time ago, Microsoft basicaly patented clicking. Well, they have done it again. From <a href='http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_999310.html?menu=news.technology' target='_blank'>Ananova</a>.com, the boys at microsoft have patented human skin as a networking medium

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Microsoft has reportedly succeeded in patenting human skin as a new kind of network.

InSourced claims recently awarded US Patent No. 6,754, 472 is a 'method and apparatus for transmitting power and data using the human body'.

The patent, it says, is part of a new plan to link together several devices using skin as a connector.

As an example, Microsoft says it would be possible to have just one speaker for a person's watch, PDA, and portable radio, if they were all connected to that speaker through skin.

It adds that different devices could be powered from a single power source strapped to the skin.

Each would be driven by multiple power supply signals working at different frequencies, and data and audio signals could also be transmitted over that same power signal.

The power source and devices would be connected to the body via electrodes.

So, are they brainy or barmy? Have they seen something in the future no-one else has, or have they completely lost their minds?

The military will love this technique, and it will be very useful because it allows for smaller and more comfortable carryable computers.

Yeah, and now microsoft gets a cut of the profits. Nifty. I wonder if i can COPYRIGHT skin, so i can sue anyone else who has skin.... hmm....
  • ObstObst Join Date: 2003-03-12 Member: 14436Members, Constellation
You didn't get the point. They didn't patent skin but a technique for using skin as a conductor.

well yeah but it's not as funny if you see it that way.

    It isn't funny anyway...

Lowering one's level of reading abilities just to consider something funny is kinda poor, as there isn't even any misspelling or such to be made fun of <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's microsoft taking out a patent that has something to with human skin... that's funny in itself. Just because you don't see the humour that i do doesn't mean you have to drag me down <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

its not what theyve SAID thats funny, but what they COULD have said

    for eg:

instead of "we'd like to trademark Windows XP" ,

"We'd like to devour your flesh and steal your soul to power our warmachines"

    See?

Actually, using the skin as a conductor and transmitter is one of the main working parts of the PAN theory (Personal Area Network). A lot of research is being done into creating working PANs so it by pulling this off MS has got one heck of a foothold in future developments =o

I'm hereby patenting neural networking. Nobody is allowed to have different parts of their brain networked with each other unless the network is managed using a licensed copy of Mariksoft ...uh...Bob, yes, I'll call it Bob.

Does anyone else see the problem with using skin as a conducter? As in, it wouldn't work? Skin itself is a terrible conducter, absolutely horrid. On dry days your skin can have as much resistance as 300 ohms, which is a hell of a lot. At that point any amount of current that can succesfully travel your body would take an easier bath, that is, one that would probably go through your blood stream and through the heart or through the nervous system and through any number of important muscles/organs. And it would probly tickle something awful. Real annoying.

    So don't patent it.

Obviously NONE of the inventions we have worked BEFORE they were invented. Lightbulbs where terrible illumination before they were made. If Microsoft wants to make skin conduct electricity and they can patent then invent instead of the other way around, why not?

    Hey, just sayin.

They patented skin as a conductor, which it clearly is not. Just seems a bit odd to me.

Well, see, they have two options.

Invent a way to utilize skin as a conductor, hope nobody else has done it, then patent it.

OR, since skin is already a conductor, albeit a bad one, they can already patent it and then improve it without time pressure.
