The game isn't just about close combat, so they wouldn't neccessarily be less useful because they're not as tough up close.
I'd expect the Eldar to not be as great in melee as the others, since most were toughness 3 when I last played; Marines and Orks were generally toughness 4.
Eldar have more access to fancy toys tho. Eldar can really dish it out, they just can't take it back. Could be very advantageous in a RTS, where you can better control your engagements as well as switch pace rapidly.
The only disadvantaged group will be players who base their skills around the strength of their units/tanks from the tabletop game - in an RTS you need to be always aware, whereas on the tabletop you can screw up as much as you like with rines.
Space Marines and Orks are sorta that. I prefer Space Marines more cause they're not "OMG MASS" like the Orks are. Orks is just so much going on, its a little overwhelming. Space Marine forces are, like tabletop, usually smaller and more efficient. Specially Devestator squads.

Still its pretty cool, but i cant seem to connect to any multiplayer games....
When I said combat I meant close combat. The Space Marines are one of the toughest guys. All-Around? I think not. They're just freaking awesome at everything, unless you count that as all-around. Which is fine with me.

Being that I wasn't notified of the signing of a NDA, there are a few things I'd like to say here:
What the **** is this?
First off: Textures aren't half bad, but everything looks so bland, its sickening.
The eldar have no animation when their shooting. They stance- then you just see a little sprite come out.
The camera is at a angle where all it does is block some things and make things look pretty- and I haven't found a way yet to change that.
While the Army Painter feature is cool, it basically gets rid of the skins, and everything looks pretty crappy unless its close to the original color.
Gameplay is like a pure RTS version of NS- everything central around enemy bases and resource points. No dynamics whatsoever.
Only 1 line for each unit. 1. And many units share this. For the Eldar, this is REALLY bad, because the voices are annoying as all hell, and the lines are at least 5-10 words.
I'm really not impressed. While I like the unit designs(which is getting me interested in WH40k), I simply do not like this. I know its beta, but frankly, there isn't a place for us to congregate at all, so whats the point? All we can do is submit bugs, which won't help the game become a good game.
What happened to the design capabilities of Relic back in the Homeworld 1 days?

Hold alt to move the camera.
Not if you change it to chapter colours from the codex, or the way you paint your models.
You can set it so you dont win using control points, so it becomes just like NS.
Its beta this will probably change.
The place to go is the Relic forums, there guys actualy read them.
I can tell you, few things are more fun then sending a horde of orcs flying when they're hit by a prism cannon <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think i'm going to actually have to pay for a FP account. I feel so.... dirty <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Quanaut, this is, you must remember, a beta. If it was good enough to make you want to buy it, they would have shipped it and made money already. You are beta testing, not beta playing. The purpose is to find bugs and glaring gameplay errors, not to let everyone have as much fun as possible.
quan its a beta, they already said that they will add more voices, if you read the forums you would know this, and incidently, I to thought there was no NDA, but infact there is, it was at first hard to find, but now it is clear right on the first page of the beta forums. So please don't give away information. The meaning of beta is, that everything can change, and if you post your thoughts in a mature way, the devs auctaly are very active on the forum and reply to almost every thread.

I did actually buy an account just to get this, and my shame was lost as soon as i started up the tutorial. WITH THE BLOOD AND THE GUSHING AND THE SCREAMING AND THE oooooooooo <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Meh, the games alright. I think, however, ground control II is better.. (www.groundcontrol2.com) <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Its fun for awhile but then it just turns into spamming men out of buidlings and throwing them into battle, no tactics, besides choosing "omg hand to hand or .. ranged!? DECISIONS DECISIONS!!" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> When I played it I was less impressed than I thought I would be.

Arreg.
Yeah. FUN!
Just so you all know, the beta is now open to non subscribers. I'm downloading as we speak, with my free CD key on hand.
GOGOGO!
IT's on the fileplanet front page, you can't miss it.
No, I won't be dipping into my cash reserve until I see solid honest to goodness proof of Nids. Planned patches don't cut it with me anymore.
